What's new

God Of War Ascension.

I WILL EAT THIS GAME
7 out of 10 :(. And that's being VERY generous.

I feel like the Condiment Twins and Enenra after Colonial Marines turned out to be a bomb.

Spoilers ahead. Be warned.

This game is God Of War 1: Redux. In some GREAT ways, and some shitty ways.

The music:
It sounds like the GOW1 soundtrack all over again. Loud, orchestral, has some really high high points, even though I was hoping for a new score.

The atmospheres and landscapes LOOK amazing:
But they seem very familiar. The puzzles are still mindbending and painful, the scope of some of the places you'll be doing battle in are huge and elaborate as always, but...nothing stands out. And just about every awesome place you cross, you can draw back to an old GOW location or event it's either almost exactly or exactly exactly like.

The Multiplayer:
Haven't touched it. Don't plan to. Next.

This where Box starts to get irate...

The Fighting:
Ther platforming is still the same, except now you scale walls via an auto crawl instead of moving around manually, which is a pain in the ass.
The weapons and magic are one in the same; here's the catch...you get 4 different powers: Ares, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, and a few gimmicky bits that arent really worth having on the wheel, but they're there. Ares has 3 levels, the Blades and the other 3 all have 5. With Ares, you get your magic attack first. But with the other 3 powers, you have to max them out before you can get their respective magic attack. In all honesty, Max Blades and Ares Magic are all you need.
Rage Of The Gods/Titans/etc. is different...the bar fills via the size of your combo/consistency of your attacking, and the minute you get hit/stop striking, it empties. If you fill the bar and keep attacking, each element has a different power for when you do a certain combo (Poseidon freezes, Ares causes explosions, etc.), but if you get hit in the middle of Rage, it stops. You dont stay in the mode until the bar depletes, it cuts the fuck out.

The Story:
Long Story Short: It's right after Kratos breaks his oath with Ares, the Furies are hunting him to punish him for it, he must defeat them to break the oath and be free of Ares.
IT'S THE FUCKING SISTERS OF FATE ALL OVER AGAIN.
THE SAME FUCKING THING AS GOD OF WAR 2.
Except instead of ending by going back in time, it flashes back between points BEFORE Kratos reaches the Furies, and after when he's trying to fight his way out of their realm. And the catch is Ares, who was apparently in the sack with one of the Furies in the hopes of finding a way to overthrow Zeus, and yadda yadda yadda, and so on. You NEVER see or speak with any of the gods, there's next to none of the usual heavy Greek presences, be it with landmarks or individuals, or crazy mythological shit...it seems/feels like it could've happened anywhere to anyone. It answers absolutely no questions usefully, at least ones that would make you want to go back in time AGAIN and help Kratos do some more shit that happened before things even got interesting.
For 3 years, I've been waiting to find out who the hell pulled Dead Kratos off the edge of the cliff after he killed Zeus in GOW3, and now I've gotta wait another 3 or 4 or 5 years until GOW makes is to the PS4 to find out. Fuck that. I knew the minute they said they were taking on multiplayer that the single player side was gonna suffer for it, and it did in spades.

It gets a 7 because it's still a VERY good game when held against the merits of all other games.

As a God Of War game, it's the least exciting of the 6.

Sad, but true.

Lol, my dad bought this primarily for the multiplayer.
Apart from the multiplayer, everything they've shown us in Ascension feels like more of the same (pretty much the whole thing could have been a bonus mission in GOW3) and the story is nowhere near as epic as the previous installments which makes me think this should have been a little prequel released on Vita or something. The multiplayer is the best thing about the game to me, but that's not what I buy a GOW game for.

I got the feeling of "more of the same" from playing the demo. Then again, I felt like that playing the entire series.

Multiplayer is obviously not going to be the selling point for a lot of people (series vets) because up until now it's been a single player, story driven experience. I understand.

Yeah, my one buddy just played through it and said it was kinda meh compared to all the other ones. Sucks :/

You have to bro you main Kratos...
Imagine it: I acquired the first GOW on the PS2 back when I was.....eleven, I think. Sold it many months later. After obtaining the PS3 and buying dozens of games, the GOW: Collection (containing 1 and 2) caught my attention, proceeded to complete them both, and acquired GOW III within a month.

Interestingly, MK9 was bought before the GOW: Collection, and I haven't began my journey of maining the Ghost of Sparta till early August 2012.

When I do complete Ascension, "what it could've been" is out of the question, for I have better things to be contemplating about. I will enjoy GOW:A for what it is...........It's good that this thread was made, now my expections are decreased and I am less likely to be disappointed.

Kuff Botal
Probably my favorite series of all time. My bro bought a Ps3 just to play GOW3. Sad to hear it hasnt kept up with its predecessors

Think of GOW: Ascension as a game set in the period before all the crazy shit starts getting serious in Kratos' life as the Ghost of Sparta.

Vampire Jesus....he wants YOUR blood now!!
honestly to me, im probably gonna rate it 8.5....i'm just not that picky when it comes to games. The combat this time around intrigues me with the fact that u only have the blades. And im definitely gonna LOVE multiplayer mode. I'd much rather be playing this GoW multiplayer than any CoD game. The way i see it. If its not broke, don't fix it. They dont really need to change much here.

I'm gonna play this game....and im going to love it!!!

Now!!

This is my thinking exactly.
I MAY try it out one day just for giggles, but I hated the beta, and I know it's gonna be a completely seperate ballgame.

Still going to purchase GOW: Ascension, somewhere down the road.
Your logic is sound. Absolutely do. Like I said, it's definitely worth the experience, and it's gonna please the hell out of anyone who isn't as familiar with it. I'm only sad because I was really hoping it would be a little more innovative.

Shit. I forgot to mention.
You dont ONLY have the Blades...you pick up the occasional disposable weapon along the way - Sword, Club, 10-pack of Throwing Spears, 10-pack of Slingshots, or a Shield. But none of them are kept or upgraded, and they can make the grappling and chain-grabbing a little messy. The 10-packs are great on the rare-ish occasion you cross them, but the rest aren't that great. Blades > all.
Without giving anything away, there's a magic trick like Medusa magic that slows down a single enemy, and one that provides a temporary clone to either fight against enemies for a few seconds, or hold levers and handles in place to turn on or off traps.

I still think everyone should play it.
And unless you're a die-hard-ish, pick-the-damn-game-apart-loyalist, you're not gonna see enough of the repetition to take away from how well the whole thing flows - the story/progression are a done before talek, but in keeping with tradition, it's a fucked up story all the way.

Let's go green!!!!
Lt. Box I dont know man im really liking the game so far. I do get a sense of deja vu in some of the levels and I think the intro/demo could have been done better, but other than that it does have some epic moments. The plus side for me and what really got me interested in it is finding out about his soft side. I was starting to get tired to see him being pissed off over and over and over for no real reason hehe.

EMPEROR_THEO

I only use characters with wakeup scoops.
This is coming from someone who genuinely enjoyed GOW: Ascension.

The biggest con of GOW: Ascension is that it's predecessor started you off climbing up a mountain on a Titan to kill every single Greek God (and bang one). So creating Ascension was just a ballsy move in general.

Very true, and very true.
But as a long, longtime fan...I mean, Im glad its still GOOD, its still a fun fuck of a blast to play, by all means.
I'm just so damn tired of the prequels -_-.
