Insuperable
My mom tells me I'm pretty
Before I begin this, I would like to thank Rolando, Triforce, and the VxG team as a whole because they were legitimately trying to create the best tournament experience for the community. They worked their asses off for almost a year trying to promote their tournament and create the next international major for fighting games. The best way to discuss this topic would probably be between pros and cons.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pros:
Da beech:
The beach had excellent scenery and gave the players an amazing atmosphere to hang out, party, and make new friends in and out of the community. From what I've heard, everyone was incredibly hospitable and welcoming to the players arriving and staying. I have seen many people enjoying the parties and the overall nightlife, which helps with the overall enjoyment of the trip.
Entertainment from the events taking place:
With the cosplay pageant probably being the most entertaining for those who visited, work was obviously put in to help players relax and help them actually enjoy their vacation rather than become overwhelmed by tournament success or failure.
Promotion:
Rolando, Triforce, and the rest of the VxG team worked hard to promote their tournament. Going to many of the major tournaments, they were able to spread the word of VxG and give the players a reason to attend the beach.
Rolando:
He was VxG's main promotional spokesperson and he did his job promoting VxG and more. Rolando didn't have to go to the lengths that he did in order to promote his event, but it is easy to tell that Rolando does in fact want the best for the community and its players. He went on podcasts, traveled around the nation, and helped in providing trips to the winners of these major events. Without him, none of the VxG threads would have been made because not enough people would even know about the tournament to make a thread. The hard work that he put into this event should be commended. I wish him the best of luck in his future events and I hope that he takes VxG 2013 as a learning experience. If you learn from your mistakes, it was never truly a mistake. If he is reading this, I suggest that he reads this post from Jebailey. http://www.testyourmight.com/threads/vxg-the-chronicles.36109/page-11#post-1043906
Triforce:
Even if you may dislike him, he was a major part in helping Rolando spread the word of VxG. Without Triforce, Rolando may not have known which tournaments to attend and he wouldn't have the top players from various communities representing VxG (EMP | VxG). He did work hard in promoting this event and I respect him for that.
VxG:
VxG is the real deal. They are for the community 100% and want to provide an excellent atmosphere for gamers everywhere.
Cons:
Preparation:
It seemed that VxG took more time preparing for parties and other events on the beach than they did to prepare for tournaments. The overall tournament seemed to be a mess in terms of brackets, time frames, and overall tournament rules (Players were DQ'd and then allowed back in the tournament). They were not properly prepared for the tournaments and it easily noticeable from the stream. Off stream, events were being canceled (such as mvc2 exhibitions), which could have been saved by proper planning.
Triforce:
Although he may have had good intentions with his partnership of VxG, he has a background that follows him wherever he goes in the fighting game community. His past put a shadow over the VxG movement and labeled this event as shady (Providing an argument to why there was such a low turnout for multiple games). Even though his past will be with him forever, I do believe he wanted the best for the community with VxG.
Pot splitting:
Although it is very well known that many players in many communities split pots, it shouldn't be obvious that they are doing so. If 5th tier teams are played in grand finals and the players are goofing around rather than playing out their matches, they should not be allowed to continue the grand finals. Nobody in the stream chat appreciated the grand finals and expressed their feelings pretty obviously. There is no one to blame after the tournament because they probably didn't know at the time, but this is something that needs to be watched at future events (for every tournament). MarkMan made excellent points about this and I agree with him 100% https://twitter.com/MarkMan23
Shang Tsung and other events being canceled:
Although Shang Tsung being snowed in at the airport wasn't technically in VxG's hands, it did hurt how VxG would be viewed from a spectator's standpoint (and attendees if they traveled to VxG for Shang Tsung's dinner). Among this, prizes were removed due to small turnouts. This was a huge issue with the Smash community.
The battle with EVO:
This may have been one of the biggest reasons for the aggression towards VxG. VxG was supposed to be the "EVO killer" and replace them as the world championship. This is an incredibly bold thing to state when the tournament being ran is still a relatively new, up-and-coming event. The dates did not help this issue either. With VxG occurring a few weeks after EVO, people were simply not able to attend because they couldn't get more time off of work, they didn't have the money to spend after EVO, they needed a break from traveling, or any other reason that could be argued.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Outside of the tournament, I believe that VxG was a good experience for those who attended. It has amazing potential. If VxG truly wants to succeed, they need to seek criticism from those who attended and those who watched (Preferably TOs, major commentators, and other major names in the fighting game community. They could even seek out Mr. Wizard and ask for advice). I hope that VxG continues to try and run their tournament and I wish them the best of luck in doing so. Everybody wanted VxG to succeed, but proper preparation and many other factors determine how successful something is.
MarkMan and Big E played huge roles in trying to help out VxG while at the beach. Although there were definitely more people helping out, Big E ran MK brackets while on vacation because of how chaotic it was, and MarkMan experienced VxG and provided much criticism and praise towards VxG.
I have more to say, but I'm tired and I have work in the morning. I'll finish this up later. Enjoy
