fight stick to regular controller?

ive been thinking since im really getting into this whole fight game scene, that i should try to get a fight stick. is it worth it to buy one? and if so, how much do they cost. i do ok with the regular ps3 controller, but if been having some trouble with my combos online. your thoughts???

It's online that's giving your problems. Wait till the patch comes to see if that helps.

Yes, it´s probably the online play giving you trouble as H20 Farmer stated already.
If you are only playing MK i wouldn´t get a stick for it tbh.
I got one and i am using it, but in my opinion MK9 is better played on a pad if you dont own a fightstick suited for MK games (button layout).
I am just using my TE stick , cause i am used to it, but as far as i can tell you don´t need plinking or double tapping in MK9.
To sum it up : Don´t get a fightstick for MK9 exclusively (but in case you do, get one with a button layout suited for MK). If you plan on playing multiple fighting games (Street Fighter, MvC, whatever) get one and try it; it´ll take some time though to get used to a stick (MadCatz TE Sticks are pretty solid and you can get them for a good price).
