Female Sektor and Cyrax explained by Ed Boon

The excitement of Kombat Pack 2 also comes with some twists of what we may have been expecting or hoping for. We're getting Sektor and Cyrax, but with the timeline change of MK1, both characters will be female. Ed explained this change and it honestly should be no surprise to any MK fan.

"We have this kind of balance we're trying to do with this game," begun Boon. "It's like, bring characters back that players want to see, but also don't just repeat the same things with them."
GameStop got with Ed Boon recently... check out the video to hear more.

I don't mind the genderswap, I just hate the Ironman shit

Boon has been tired of MK for years. I think that's why he's so quick to keep changing shit and mixing around established things, he's bored with it all. It's time for him to move on. Let someone who loves Mortal Kombat take the reigns again

What are the chances they release premium skins for Cyrax and Sektor that are the actual cyborgs that people want to play? It would still sort of suck, considering how different the moves that we've seen appear to be from a legacy standpoint (I don't care to see cyborg Cyrax shooting insulation foam out of his chest).

It's just such a strange move on their part. They should at the very least be actual cyborgs.

I don't really care, it's a new era, lots of characters got redesigns. And this is theirs. And I get not people not liking it. But I do find the snowflakes who go further than not liking and who are seemingly offended by the gender swap screaming woke in some comments pretty funny.

I'd rather they just made some variation of Triborg though but all in one rather than switching between them, whether that would have just been a combination Cyrax and Sektor or with Cyber Smoke and/or Sub Zero too.

All I really care about it how cool and fun characters are to play. And I'll need to wait to see more gameplay to see that.

Boon is a tool. Him, and the rest of NRS, is the reason why even if MK goes to another publisher after WB sells them, it will still remain the shit stain that it is today.

The only snowflakes are the people putting that in the game as well as the people demanding and celebrating things like that being put in the games. Not the people calling out ultra left degenerate poltics being pushed and forced on their favorite franchises.

And if you want to pretend like this is not happening across all mediums, from comics movies games etc, and people are just imagining things, then you are severly mentally challanged

Depends on if ed/nrs still has any rights to mk IP or its 100% owned by WBD.

If its 100% owned by WBD and they sell it to someone, that someone can just refuse to hire nrs and have someone else work on mk.
Depends on the deal ed made with wb when mk was bought by wb

Yeah exactly. The only way this series gets better at this point is going with a new devs team and publisher.

MK/NRS has been crushing it in sales. MK1 and MK11 were/are really successful. If you don't like the quality, that's fine, but I don't see any incentive for a purchasing company to go with a new devs team/publisher, unless it's to try and cut costs and go with an in-house team of their own, or go with a cheaper team.

I don't care about the gender swap, is not like Cyrax and Sektor were always deep as character, it seems everyone care more about their gameplay and cyber appearance, so, does not matter if they are male or female in the end ..... when I see them, I see cyber ninjas, so, fuck off if they are male or female, lol ! :p

I liked their armor being like Iron Man, because give chance to see them as human and interacting with other characters, so, we will see they as human and as armor warriors , what is better for character development and personality ..... they can now express more at facial level and show better emotions

About NRS and MK perhaps being sold ? oh boy, again this gossip ? if true this time, I am favour and second that ......... WB is showing truly imcompetent and has no ideia how to progress with the franchise, so, a fresh air and wind of change for MK series is more than welcome ..... I would prefer that MS or Sony could buy the IP, or Bandai Namco, Capcom or CD Project, instead of EA, Ubisoft or other crap evil bullshit game company, hehe ;)

Anyway, here we go :

I don't even think we need to bring any politics into this at all.

At the end of the day, NRS have given us a bunch of new characters baring the same names as the characters we know. Sektor and Cyrax are just the icing on the cake, but they've taken all the cool stuff away from half the cast and made them completely different characters for no reason.

To me, it's literally the same as if they were to put Superman in a Spiderman outfit in Injustice 3 and have him thwipping around Metropolis and say "Hey guys, Superman is back! It's still the same Superman you know and love but he's slightly different in this timeline just because"

  1. I think the worrying about sektor/cyrax movelists/playstyles because of the aesthetic change is silly give we've literally seen like 10 seconds of clips from them. As a sub main I get being worried that your archetype is going to be fucking destroyed, but also they seem to have done a much better job with the DLC's than the main cast.
  2. MK has always fucked with the formula, way more than any other fighter that's been around as long.
  3. I do think the writing for them will be terrible. This has little to do with gender swaps (although it usually is a sign of lazy writing) and plenty to do with the fact that the writing has been consistently meh for awhile now.

The community is in unison about his haha just to ramble a bit: I’m still mad about the wasted potential of a kameo system in terms of telling comic book style team up stories. If I’m on my 20th fight with Quan Chi and Frost, it would be cool if they had a cool interaction about that. Or a deepened relationship.

I get that the tournament itself is gonna be the same story every game, like every other fighting game. But they don’t get into the back stories and deeper stories of the characters at all and the kameo/invasions was a good excuse to really take your team on an adventure.

Theres just no real concept to it all, like a cohesive this is why we love our kameo system and new universe

What bothers me is that the most iconic thing of MK, the violence, has almost been completely washed out of the plot. I get that on some level it's a lot easier and has more mass appeal, but it's not like parents are going to buy their kids an MK game ONLY if they don't murder people during the story mode.

It's a game where literally the entire point is that when you win you get to rip your opponents head off, and the plot of this entire entry is "gosh we're both mostly good but what an unfortunate misunderstanding". It even weakens the pre combat trash talk lines, which is another area where MK has been ahead of the game since everyone has multiple custom quips for everyone else. Except now they're almost all "boy we sure do disagree about how to do the right thing" nonsense rather than scorpion promising bloody hellfire for quan or sub or whatever.

I've said it before but almost everything about the tone, character design, and plot of MK1 (and to a lesser degree MK11) screams MCU. I think what you're getting at is that the game no longer feels dark and gritty. Johnny Cage is just a quirky guy who makes quips during the story mode, classic villians like Baraka, Quan Chi, Reptile, and Havik have out-of-place sob story backgrounds that people would have cringed at if the game released just a few years earlier, Shao is just a jobber. The tone of the series changed so much that the violence almost feels out of place. Honestly, I'd even say that the story mode feels like a children's movie with violence added on.

I get you that the way it currently is, everyone is an anti-hero. and if everyone is an anti-hero, nobody is. It makes things a bit more like the wizard of oz where so and so doesn't have a heart and the lion is a coward etc.

The gritty dark tone is definitely lost, along with the "electronica"/90s techno vibes.

I think it's pretty stupid but I also think ed boons lost his god damn mind if the design choices of these past couple of games were really all decisions made by him.
