It has been said that perseverance is "the secret of all triumphs". If that is the case, then EMP's DarthArma has indeed been setting himself up for one of the more notable triumphs of his Injustice career to date. Arma, who has been faithfully soldiering away in NJ, and just as faithfully putting in work behind the commentator's mic, has at last been able to best his friend and training partner KDZ twice in the span of a week. After winning at Dunellen's 8 on the Break tournament earlier in the week, DA made his way out to Marlboro's Kingdom Come event to test his mettle once again.
Rapzilla and SwiftTomHanks have been receiving a good deal of positive feedback for their events at the UltraSpec warehouse, and Saturday's tournament was no exception. As with other dedicated IGAU scenes, there's something special that happens when this particular group of talented players comes out to play each other, and this tourney was full of wild/close finishes, some rather shocking upsets, and a great display of gameplay from players of all characters.
Notable appearances included Green Arrow player Scoot Magee, who looked strong Saturday as he fought his way into Top 8 and the hearts and minds of Arrow fans across the country. In addition was the tenacious Bane player Grr, who has been steadily improving at a rapid clip and was able get the best of Frantastic and his Superman in a must-see barn burner of a set in Top 8. Newly famed Lex Luthor player rev0lver was on hand and made a spirited showing until he was finally stopped. And KT Smith was back in the house, and showcasing a variety of different Green Lantern tricks and setups that kept his opponents on the ropes. The ending set of matches between KT and Rico went down to the wire, with Rico using his wily instincts to edge out a win in all three games.
In the last tournament of the current version of the game, age-old competitive rivals Rico Suave and EVO champ KDZ met in an explosive set that saw KDZ confidently secure and hold the upper hand. Although Rico fought his best, he never seemed to be far away from the corner of a stage, and KDZ patiently avoided Black Adam's air control options as he worked to keep Rico where he wanted him. KDZ won the battle for Losers finals convincingly, sending Rico out of the tourney in what might ultimately be his final Injustice tournament matches.
KDZ and Arma met both in Winners Finals and Grand Finals, and their sets were a blast to watch. Arma carefully controlled his spacing to keep KDZ out of comfortable range, and made excellent use of both Bataman's trait and armored b3's to get himself out of tight spots. Whenever KDZ attempted to move in, Arma was ready with a batarang, a jump 2, or air bats, and he ran the gamut of Batman's pressure options as he cruised to a 3-1 win in Winners Finals. Grand Finals started off on a good note for KDZ as he went up 2-1 and eventually reset the bracket. But Arma kept his composure, winning the final set 3-1 with a resounding final game that saw him still on his first life bar.
Arma continues to look stronger and stronger with each passing week, and this tournament may be a watershed moment for him. With the patch being released however, the status quo is in jeopardy; and it will be interesting to see how everyone adapts their playstyles in the coming weeks.
