doing meter burn inside combos

So I can do meter burn outside of combos by simply pressing R2 after the special command. Inside combos it seems that very often the R2 doesn't register and I get the normal version instead. I don't understand why there's a difference.

When is R2 supposed to be pressed? At exactly the same time as the last button in the special? Right after? Why should the timing differ if the special comes after a normal inside a combo?

It differs between attacks, and yes the exicution timeing gets more strict during combos or off of certain specials. You will have to practice to see where the timing is.
