What's new

Can someone give me a full explanation on blocking?

So, as you might now i am new to this game...bought the game on impulse...never played a fighter since Tekken 3. This is easily the hardest game i have ever played, so please don't make fun of me.

So, how exactly does blocking work? I know you hold backwards for normal attacks and down for low, but how does jumping work? From what i have tried holding backwards does not work...

Also, the one thing that confuses me the most...is there no way to get out of a combo once you are in it? I would gladly spent all my meter on that if it is possible, since the people i face always know their combos and do like 31% in one combo...they do that 3 times and i'm dead :(

Thanks in advance.

If you are in the air, you cannot block at all.

once per match, one your second life bar, you get a clash that allows you to get out of a combo. you must wager meter after the clash and if you bet more meter than your opponent you gain life, if your opponent wagered more meter you lose life. you start the clash by hitting forward and the meter burn button. and then select the appropriate button that corrosponds to the amount of meter you wish to bet

Attacks are classified in 4 hit level categories:

Low: they visually hit on the legs. They hit standing and crouching opponents. You only block them by holding down.

Mid: they visually hit around waist level. They hit standing and crouching opponents. You can block them standing (back) or crouching (down)

High: they visually hit chest and head. They only hit standing opponents, they miss (whiff) on crouching opponents. You block them standing by holding back or make them whiff by crouching.

Overhead: they visually hit head level and above. They hit standing and crouching opponents. You only block them by holding back.

In this game you can only block in the ground. Jumping attacks are Overheads.

There are 4 types of attacks: high, mid, overhead, and low.

High attacks can be blocked standing and will usually whiff on crouching opponents completely.

Mid attacks can be blocked standing or crouching.

Overhead attacks must be blocked standing; they will hit crouch-blocking opponents. Most jumping attacks hit overhead, though some only hit high, allowing them to be crouch-blocked.

Low attacks must be blocked crouching; they will hit standing opponents.

You have to watch out for jumping attacks known as "cross-ups". These are jumping attacks that move over your head and attack you from behind. In order to block a cross-up, you have to reverse the direction of your block, since the attack is now coming from your other side.

Once you are being combo'd, there is no way to drop out early, except for once per round while you are on your 2nd (red) health bar. You can press forward+meter-burn to initiate a clash, and break the combo. That's why it's good to get your combos down, so you can capitalize on your opponents' mistakes.

If someone is pressuring you too heavily, you can press meter-burn while blocking to spend a bar of meter, push your opponent back, and reset all block advantage to a neutral state.

Hope that clears things up for you.

Holding Back (the direction away from your opponent) lets you block high mid and overhead attacks, but not lows.
Holding down lets you block everything except overhead attacks.
Typically you aren't going to be able to spot when an attack is an overhead, high, mid, or a low just by looking at it. You have to get to know the characters by looking at their move list to learn this. ("But there are 24 characters, not counting DLC!", you say. I reply, "Yep, pretty much...")
You cannot block in the air at all. Jumping can be very hazardous for that reason.

Pretty much the only way to avoid combos is to not get caught in them in the first place. It takes practice, and you just have to keep playing and losing until you start to recognize a setup and learn the best way to react to it.

Crossups bro one word... crossups...

When you are talking about getting hit while holding back while some one jumps you are talking about crossups...
You need to understand that when someone jumps over you or almost over you and performs an attack you are going to have to block the opposite way... so you would hold what seems like forward to block when someone jumps over you when you have been knocked down, or when they jump over you from close range....

Crossups are just a part of hold back to block fighting games... you may be free to them for a little while but sooner or later you will get the hang of it...

Thanks everyone! I am practicing blocking right now, i think i understand it a little better. I also forgot about the clash that you mentioned, i thought it was useless, but i realized it's pretty good.

Checking out the various videos and threads you posted...hopefully i'll be a master in no time!

there is a science to clashing as well... you want to make sure you have more meter then them when you initiate it... so you win and get the health lead...
