Smarrgasm
What's a Smarrgasm?
Another week in Atlanta, another power packed Injustice-fest from the Atlanta Kombat Krew. This week brought upon us the fourth installment of the Atlanta Kombat Arena. 18 players were in attendance this Friday including the return of AK Harold after missing out on last weeks festivities. This week major names in Pig of the Hut, Tyler Lantern, and Lord of the Fly were not in attendance, however, the competition boasted a powerful force of players with the top 5 seeds being BYS Smarr, Reno Racks, Trepound, Harold, and RTD. The tournament rules this week were altered to 2/3 sets instead of the usual 3/5 to help those preparing for The Fall Classic which Atlanta will have a strong team of representatives attending. Now, on to the action of the night!
The tournament would begin with a spectacle for all to enjoy on stream with Goomba taking on Captain Zero. The twist of the night being that Goomba had vowed to use all Joker instead of his patented Wonder Woman. With a sweeping endorsement from Pig of the Hut, Goomba stuck true to his word and took on Captain Zero's Bane in the first match of the tournament (we know how to give the viewers a show). JOKER VS BANE?!?! How many of you guys have seen that before? The first match was very heated with each player making all the viewers and spectators get very hype with a down to the wire finish with Bane and Captain Zero grabbing Game 1. Goomba would collect himself and show off some powerful Joker abilities to quickly grab game 2 and then subsequently take game 3 with an insane exchange near the end to show that his Joker is no slouch and to complete the comeback.
As we moved on through the first rounds, Ace Universe (now AK Kumar) would take on Trepound and put his new Black Adam to the test vs the ferocious Hawkgirl. Ace would take Game 1 pretty convincingly but Tre would show that he has put work in and adjusted to win 2-1. Reno Racks and Cyusstrike would then do battle with Reno making it known that his Batman is something to be reckoned with alongside his Batgirl and taking the set 2-0. Smarr would also have to take on Reayon in the early rounds. Reayon had been absent for some time but his Ares had generated a lot of buzz even in his absence. The set was close with Smarr closing out the nailbiter 2-1 and Reayon relaying a message to everyone that he was there to play.
In the second round, Harold and Storm the Gates would meet first allowing for a break between matches for Smarr. Storm the Gates was leading with his Martian Man Hunter tonight and was out to prove his power while Harold was "playing with his food" by leading with Zatanna in his matches so far. The two DLC characters would do battle in Game 1 with Storm the Gates taking a decisive victory over the girl magician. Harold then had to think a little before going back to his guns and the speedforce by choosing his Flash. Storm would keep putting up a fight but Harold would not be denied as Barry Allen foiled the Martian's plans for victory to take the set 2-1 and move Harold on in the winners bracket.
The next match would be very interesting as Reno Racks met with a tough opponent in IchokeonKush. Both players are known for being Batman mains. Both stuck with Master Wayne with the match being a game of wits and gadgets galore. ChokeonKush would take a close Game 1 showing that his up close pressure was not to be ignored. Showing great defense and patience, Kush would win Game 2 as well with a time out victory and booking a ticket into the next round of Winner's.
With the matches going by faster and faster, Goomba and Smarr were now up. This was a forming rivalry nowadays in Atlanta with this being the 5th meeting in 4 weeks between the two. The twist again this week though was Goomba running his Joker throughout the whole tournament. Smarr stuck with the power of the dictator and had to face the crazy man on the alleyway. The match began with Smarr playing his runaway game trying to feel out Joker and over time it seemed to be working. Goomba made his way in and did some damage but it would not prove enough with Smarr taking Game 1. Goomba got off to a better start in Game 2 but Black Adam found his way back taking the set with a low lightning to finish him off.
The next match would pit two of Atlanta's best against one another. Clint the Beast, proud owner of the best late night stream shenanigans ever, would be facing Trepound and his in your face Hawkgirl. However, Tre chose not to use Hawkgirl at all in this set because of the character Clint had decided to pick, Deathstroke. Trepound would take out his Batgirl to combat the power of Slade. After many back and forth exchanges, Tre would win Game 1 and prove that he isnt just a one trick pony with Hawkgirl. Clint would return fire (yea i said it) with Deathstroke and shoot his way to an even set at 1-1. Clint then took an early lead in Game 3 forcing Tre to play risky and thus spelling his demise and giving Clint the set 2-1.
Winners semi's were not set with the clashes being Smarr vs Harold and Kush vs Clint. Harold and Smarr had met yet again and this time Smarr was looking to get back at Harold for recent events (two 3-0 losses). Harold would again lead with Zatanna despite the high profile of the match. The first match would spell doom for Harold as Zatanna was beaten and battered with Smarr showing he would force Harold to play Flash if he wanted to win. Harold smartly switched back to his main for Game 2. Smarr would force Harold down to the magic pixel of life only to get opened up and be forced to clash just in time before Harold did an unclashable combo to finish him off. However, the clash put both on the magic pixel and lead to an insane finish with Harold activating trait and Smarr somehow frauding out the win with a slowed down MB lightning anti-airing Harold to take the set 2-0 and move him on to Winner's Finals.
Clint vs Kush was a heated affair as well with Clint again sticking to his guns (oh yea i did it again) to take on the power of Ben Affleck (oh i bet you all hate me now =p). Kush would start off swinging again getting his offense moving and forcing Clint to go down almost a whole life bar. Clint turned it around and would show that Deathstroke still has the firepower to take on the best despite his normalizations. Clint was able to utilize the arsenal of tools available to him to fluster Kush with zoning and pressure alike and complete the comeback with a flurry of low gun shots that Kush could not seem to maneuver. Clint would keep the train rolling as much of the same happened in Game 2. Clint was especially good at showing the power of Deathstroke's Jump 3 sword attack throughout the matches for much of his offense. He would end the set again with his guns this time with a well times MB high shots.
With winners finals set, the trek through the Bracket of Alternative Success (shoutouts to Dogysamich) would begin for many players. RTD and Trepound would play first on stream with Tre finding victory 2-0. Cyusstrike and Storm the Gates would then face with Cyus winning 2-0. On stream, Reayon and Trepound would play an exciting 2-1 set of Ares vs Hawkgirl with Reayon making the adjustment to power his way on through the Bracket of Alternative Success. Cyus would then remove the last of Bruce Wayne's hopes for victory by eliminating Kush. Harold then dashed the hopes of the Low Tier Heroes by eliminating Reayon and his levelled up Ares. Top 4 was now set with Harold vs Cyus in the Loser's Semifinals and Smarr vs Clint in Winner's Finals.
Loser's Semis would be played first and it would prove to be a heated war despite the presence of the cold Killer Frost. The theme of the night had been many controller issues and it seemed to continue somewhat with Cyus and his Killer Frost dropping all of his vortex attempts and letting Harold out of jail. Harold took great advantage and 50/50'd Killer Frost giving her a taste of her own medicine and taking Game 1. Cyus stuck with the controller for now but would make his own personal adjustments and showing strong play to close out a cliffhanger of a game with an insaely clutch throw to even up the tie at 1-1. Cyus then took a controller change and a second break to get ready for a true test in Game 3. Harold would compose himself as he is always known to do and the intensity was there again as it came down to the final hits. Harold would end up taking the set after each player traded the Injustice Pig back and forth. Harold used a spaced B22 to end the set and move on to Loser's Finals.
Winner's Finals was upon us. An epic bout of two players from Atlanta with Smarr taking on Clint and his carousel of characters as always. Clint was finally getting his grips on this game now and Smarr was up to his usual antics. Clint would give the people something to wonder as he danced around the character select screen as Smarr sat wondering on the picture of his faithful Black Adam. Clint eventually choosing a character ended up on BANE. It was yet another incredible surprise from Clint and in the early on of Game 1 Clint would power his way to a fast almost life bar lead from some command grabs and television throws and a single flower. Smarr knew that debuff was coming and took advantage to quickly attempt to even the score. Clint got right back to his powerful game by venoming up and hitting Smarr forcing him to clash and lose even more life. Unfortunately for Clint, Bane went in to debuff during the clash and it seems his 4 bar wager turned from 33% damage to around 10% which would frustrate Clint and spell his doom as Smarr took advantage of the saved life to close out Game 1. Clint was now forced to make a decision and his decision was to go back to his trusty Deathstroke. He showed it was no more about tricks but about serious play and took Game 2 from Smarr's clutches as he tried to adjust. Game 3 would flip back over to Smarr as he found a way to deal with Clint's all over the place Deathstroke. Down 2-1 Clint would make yet another character selection this time choosing to go into a mirror match with Smarr and go dictator vs dictator to prove who was the true ruler. The match was a flash of divekicks and lightning but Smarr proved to be too much closing out the set with a well timed jump back 3 to give Clint's Black Adam the 2 boots to the face and make him crawl back from the losers bracket.
In Loser's Final's, we would see each player looking for a victory to force a runback with Smarr. Clint had the advantage off the bat by choosing yet another mystery character to many us of in LEX LUTHOR. The chat and the room began to get hype as Harold was faced against the power of money and the chrome dome. Lex is a character known for struggling vs zoners but in the Flash he sees a character that only likes to be in your face. It seemed like a smart pick and early on the fight would go toe to toe. Clint would utilize the power of his Lex armor to fight his way through the Flash's onslaught and use a great armor into grab to take the first game and put Harold on his heels. Game 2 brought about the power of tricks with Clint utilizing tons of mine setups and using a crazy combination of probes and the Themyscira tree to end Harold's hopes of coming back in Game 2. At 2-0 up, Clint was already looking ahead to Game 3 and his chance for Grand Finals. Game 3 came down to the last of the life bars but without the ability to keep Lex from running Harold had to eat a jump back 3 axe that would end the set with a powerful, statement making 3-0 win for Clint and making the chat and room explode with love for Lex Luthor. He would advance back into Grand Finals to face Smarr. The real question though, who would he use???
Grand Finals. What would it hold in store? Smarr was looking for his second straight victory, Clint was looking to show the hype as always and take down the dictator that Smarr represented. After a small break for Clint, it was time to get back into the action. It started with the mind games at the character select screen. With everyone screaming for Lex, Clint obliged. The match would start again with Clint taking a commanding lead through the use of some well timed J3's and both of the TV's on the asylum. Now that they were out of the way, Smarr took is time to answer back landing some Ex-lightning hands and a MB low lightning to somehow get the first round back first. Clint would attempt to get things moving but Smarr denied all chances and closed out the match to take Game 1. Clint made the switch back to his surefire Deathstroke and the match was insanely close with a Double KO happening in the first round. The game came down to the wire but Smarr was able to close it out with a D1-lightning hands in a close quarters exchange that could have gone either way. Smarr was now on the verge of victory at 2-0 but you can never count Clint out. He would make the switch back to Lex for one more hope at magic. Smarr would not be fooled though as he foiled all the tricks again to convincingly finish off Game 3 and take the set 3-0.
This marks the 2nd straight Atlanta Kombat Arena victory for Smarr and he is now the reigning and true champion in Atlanta for now. Black Adam has been the talk of many heated discussions, but Smarr just keeps playing his game. Next week will have more twist and turns in store as Pig of the Hut will return and everyone will be looking to dethrone Smarr.
