Breakaway Help?

At this point in the game, I think I've gotten down most of the core new mechanics (i.e. wakeups) but for some reason, I still can't get breakaway to come out when I want it to.

Does anyone have any tips for timing or tricks to make it easier? I'd hate for this to remain a gap in my play.

you have to tap down+R2 when ur character is starting to fall in the air

Same. It just doesn’t want to come out half the time.
