Question Wanting to become more competetive...

Hello all,

I've been playing MK since the days of being a wee lil lad and have been playing MK9 quite a bit since its release, wnet a hiatus for a while and after recieving a new fight stick controller for X-mas, it got pulling out all the old fighters in my library, and finally stteled back down with my comfort MK.

Besides all that BS, I noticed changing over to a stick it has been maybe not the smoothest transition, but its coming along. I am wanting to go more competetive and hopefully enter in tournaments, I've always been a very casual MK player and I am curious if any of you out there would be willing to share a lil advice on how to go about it...

I am sure thi sisn't thonly thread on the site and I am sure many are now screaming oh great here comes a NOOB.

work on fundamentals, poking, counter poking, anti air, whiff punishing and another big thing is to play people who are better then you. are you on xbox or psn?

I will say that the Tom Brady living guide is amazing for getting started.

Where can I find this living guide actually I have heard quite a bit about Tom Brady.

I mostly main with Mileena and up until my hiatus and switching to the stick (whcih BTW I have yet to understand how played for so long without that thing)

The living guide is available on the google play store for android and pc. It is a paid app, but ABSOLUTELY worth it. The guide has multiple corner and mid screen combos, with or with out meter, basic general strategies, frame data, kombat kodes, fatalities. It has all the information you could need to become a very decent player. Other than the guide, right here on TYM is your one stop spot for MK advice.

I was like you a year ago, just playing casually, then wanted to be more serious as well as have more fun. Try to find people on these forums in your area, and set up some casual matches for fun. Once you start networking and get to know the community, you'll see how awesome everyone is, and then just start going to tourneys for fun.

Thank you all thus far, Im not what many would call a noob I have been playing for quite sometime,just mainly been flying solo and staying offline, now I am moving out of my cave and entering the fray, I greatly appreciate everyone's advice, I know its gonna be a long trek and I know I will be getting my @$$ handed to me often.

Where in the world do you live? You might be able to get some what of a scene together.

I am actually located in Northern Virginia close by DC

If you have friends that play offline, start there. Others have covered the basics you should work on, like anti airing, poking, whiff punishing etc. etc. Another thing I would suggest is watching streams of offline tournaments to see how the "worlds best" play the game to develop your own ideas. There should be a stream for SCR tom. around noon with some of the best, but you can always go on youtube and get a idea of the game.

Counterpoking, spacing/walking back, footsies and things of that nature are important.

Try to get a well rounded understanding of your main and/or secondary's frame data so you can determine what's safe, unsafe, neutral etc to refine your set ups and explore your options.

Match up experience, try to find serious players that will give you really good feedback and help you grow as a player, you can add my PSN: Espio872 and I wouldn't mind helping you out and answering questions.


Browse the forums too and make sure to ask lots of questions if you don't understand something .

Thanks Espio, I will add you later when I able to log on my PS3, speaking of frame data, I have always that trown around about learning the frame data and hearing how important it is to learn. I have always based my timing off of rythm and musical counting (sorry I've been musician for many years close to about 10+) I never sat down to memorize the frame counts.

Work on pokes, try to find some good players online/offline if you could, footsies.. Talk to people on Tym. TYM is the pure reason why I can actually play the game.

I am finally getting my skills back up to par with Mileena, I am considering moving on to learning Skarlet as well to form a decent tag team in the game. I was wondering if anyone here could explain to me the importance of understanding frame data, or is it just something extra to lear to further understand the game. I seem to never find anyone who can explain well enough.

Have you seen Somberness's frame data? He's posted every characters and he explains it pretty well, although its not the funnest thing to look at, i'm not good at explaining it either but the numbers help you determine which moves are safe, which ones can be punished, how fast your start up for a string is, etc. Its alot to wrap the noggin around. Btw I'm not far from you so add me on PSN- FANGORIA19, I'm not great but a worthy opponent.

Hey, actually Northern Va DOES have a bit of a scene, at least it did when I was still playing a few months ago. You would need to catch Blackula for more details on that, since he would know who still plays in that area. But the good news is that you've probably got some good talent from this site not even but a few miles from where you are

ImmortalSkillit The NOVA peeps have been traveling down to SOVA and spending weekends at my place lately.

Don't neglect the biggest fundamental of all: stick control. I kind of glossed over that when I got my first Qanba 7 months agao and I'm still paying for it....

You all have been great to me since wanting to take my game further and I will be checking into this upcoming tourny, not sure if I am gonna make it or not, I gotta fit it into the busyiness that is my life. Blackula, I'm quite familiar with SOVA, its where I spent the entirety of my naval service, I've only been up in NOVA since 2011, personally glad I haven't had to make that drive every weekend anymore.

I have a lot of support going into this, you guys have been great with helping me out and I have a wife who has done nothing but support me getting out there, not to mention my 5 year old caught wind of what I was up to lately and has been telling all his lil classmates about how his Dad is awesome at games.

So BOT I'm currently working on stringing different chains and Spec. Moves together trying to see what works and what doesn't , I have quite few decent combos committed to memory now and I think that I'm going to continue to spend wtime committing more to memory. Iv'e been taking baby steps. I know I'm gonna whiff my first tourny, having to adjust to the evironment and the atmosphere of it, just reminds me of the old days of playing in a band or having to brief big military officers lol! anyway thank you againn guys...
