Working on a project for a class I'm doing and we're focusing on the experience of a game and how games are enjoyable because of how they make the player feel. For example, Dark Souls II is fuckin' hard, but that difficulty provides the audience with a sense of accomplishment among other things for being good at it.

What feeling makes you want to play fighting games? More importantly, what feeling makes it worth practicing combos and reading frame data and learning all the terms? Is it feeling like a badass? Beating your enemies? Perfect executions? What is it that they do for you? Vote and/or leave a comment please.

Not Good Enough
Getting away from team oriented games. League of Legends, CoD, Overwatch, etc are all reliant on your teammates NOT being food or kills for the other team. In fighting games, there are no teams, no one to bring you down, and no one to carry you to a victory. It feels more rewarding when you win, and more damning if you lose horribly.

God Confirm

We're all from Earthrealm. If not, cool pic brah.
my opponent knows hes a better player than me. I know hes a better player than me. But he still lost because of all the layers of gimmicks and no i wont do a run back

Where the hell is Reiko's wheel kick
1) Feel the power on the actions from improved physics (something only NRS can provide the last few years)
2) Bath in the blood of your opponent

Something else: Competitive drive. I'm not too competitive in other things, so this is where I live that part of me.

Something else, and that is to get me pressed. The more you press me, the more I get my fighting spirit arisen. When I get my fighting spirit arisen, I get my concentration in high peaks.

Resolution through knowledge and resolve.
Violent euphoria...

So, I don't sound like a sociopath - let me explain...

For me playing football and boxing were really fun. Football, in particular, because you go all out to get a big hit for a few seconds. Then, relax. In boxing, you move and your opponent moves - and vice-versa. You're both performing these twitch-quick movements trying to get your momentum to land something significant while avoiding your opponent's momentum. When you finally cross him up and get your momentum to catch him, the resulting explosion is euphoric for boxers. Conversely, if you react too quickly, too slowly, or misread that initial twitch and get crossed up - you end up on the wrong end of your opponent's momentum. Fighting games try to recapture this feeling and even without the physical pain or threat of injury, the emotion in fighting games is still real.

The satisfaction of knowing what your opponent is going to do before they even know, and punishing them for it.

Beating people's assess at something you put time and effort into being good at is very satisfying.

Seeing yourself progress. There's always something to work on in fighting games, and always someone out there better than you that you can learn from.

The social aspect, is probably the best part. It's a great avenue to meet new people with similar interests.

Have you had your MK today?

Personally speaking, I find fighting games like for example MKXL - are much tougher than DS, which can be paced almost entirely by the player, and even cheesed if needed.

The toughness of fighting games is part of the appeal for me though. It takes me months, maybe even years to play through Dark Souls; not because it's particularly tough, but because its slower, RPG-ish pacing often challenges my interest level. I'm currently taking a break from Souls to play a different kind of souls; namely Ermac.
