What's new

What are your favorite albums so far this year? Most Disappointing?

I have listened to a lot of music here in this year of 2012 and I gotta say that this has been one of the best years for music I have had in a while. I can only think of a handful of albums that just really dig all that much this year. Let's hope things continue this way into the new year, especially for all the great albums that are supposed to be dropping.

My favorites (no particular order after first two):

1) Meshuggah- Koloss
2) Danza IV: The Alpha The Omega
3) Coheed and Cambria- The Afterman
4) Childish Gambino- Royalty
5) Bermuda- The Wandering
6) Hacktivist- Hacktivist
7) Modern Day Babylon- The Manipulation Theory
8) Adaliah- Broken Families
9) Glass Cloud- The Roya Thousand
10) Jay Z and Kanye West- We are the Throne (Is that the name? Not sure)
11) The Faceless- Autotheism
12) Whitechapel- Whitechapel

Most disappointing:

1) The Acacia Strain- Death is the Only Mortal
2) Serj Tankian- Harakiri
3) Slipknot- Antennas to Hell (Slipknot comes back after so many years to give a greatest hits album, FUCK YOU SLIPKNOT! :p I still love them though)

That's all off the top of my head lol. Anyways what are some of your favorites from the past year guys? :)

Whitechapel - Whitechapel
Nas - Life is Good
God Forbid - Eqilibrium
Shadows Fall - Fire From the Sky
Gojira - Le enfant Sauvage
Sylosis - Monolith

Most Dissapointing

Slipknot - "Lol we're gonna make you wait another year"
Acacia Strain - "No wonder people confuse us with Emmure Part III"

Yeah whitechapel really surprised me.

I was expecting generic stuff from them and they turned around and put out, not only their best record, but one of the best records of 2012

Lord Beef

Death Metal and Trance
Lets see-
My list is pretty congruent with both of you actually.

I would add Baptized in Filth by Impending Doom and Chelsea Grin's EP evolve is really good as well.

Biggest disappointment is Intrinsic by The Contortionist. I was really excited about it too, could not get into it. Exoplanet blows it away in every phase IMO.

Jesus, I've been missing out on a lot of albums this year. WTF lol.
Okay, well my biggest disappointment this year was the New CD from Wretched. I can't even remember the name of it lol.
And my favorites this were:
For Today: Immortals
Veil of Maya: Eclipse

Tolkeen

/wrists
Circa Survive - Violent Waves
(This album taught me the awesomeness that is a lossless format... fuck mp3)

Idk if I agree about the contortionist, but then I kinda do haha.

I heard mixed things about immortals, but then I listened to it and I still love that band for what they do haha. Not a Christian at all btw lol, but I respect the hell outa those guys for standing up for what they believe in and making awesome music. I also really liked veil of Maya's New one, but that came out like a month before koloss so I wasn't focused on it haha.

Error

1. Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity, this album is almost flawless, Travis Ryan is a crazy vocalist, probably the best in death metal right now, and everything about the instrumentation is just amazingly done.
2. Nile - At the Gate of Sethu, I really like this album and the Egyptian mythology in the lyrics
3. Cryptopsy - Cryptopsy, a lot of old school Cryptopsy fans have shied away from the band due to the new vocalist and the band's deathcore release in 08, but I feel like this album has redeemed them.
4. Dying Fetus - Reign Supreme, best 3 piece band ever.
5. The Faceless - Autotheism, not as good as Planetary Duality, but I still liked it.
6. Rings of Saturn - Dingir, pretty solid tech death/aliencore album.

Most disappointing:
Cannibal Corpse - Torture, with such a great bassist in Alex Webster, and Corpsegrinder being such a powerful vocalist, CC's new songs sure sound stale and don't seem to stand out from one another.
Municipal Waste - whatever the new album's called, these guys just suck now
Soulfly - Enslaved, as much second hand embarrassment I get whenever Max Cavalera speaks, I still have hopes that he'll make a comeback, this album is a lot better than previous releases, so he's getting there.

Come On Die Young
Favorite:
Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity
Alcest - Les Voyages de L'Ame
Flying Lotus - Until The Quiet Comes
Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind
If These Trees Could Talk - Red Forest

Most Disappointing:
Gaslamp Killer - Breakthrough
Pig Destroyer - Book Burner (even though everyone loves it for some reason)
Dying Fetus - Reign Supreme
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!

In Between:
The Faceless -Autotheism

Overall this year was kinda meh but had some good stuff. My favorite album of the 2010's is still Ulcerate's The Destroyers of All.

The new Cattle Decap is sick I agree with you guys on that for sure.

New Goatwhore and Toxic Holocaust were also good. Municipal Waste's new album was solid

The new Pallbearer is epic too

I have no idea why Axl Rosenberg swears by these guys... I just don't get it....
I actually really like them. I just hated that album. Their previous stuff is much better imo.

Also check out Natasha by them. It's a little different than their usual stuff but really good.

I really enjoyed Flying Lotus' new album. Arctic Monkey's released an album last year but I didn't end up getting it until this year so I'll count that too.

Most disappointing:
3) Slipknot- Antennas to Hell (Slipknot comes back after so many years to give a greatest hits album, FUCK YOU SLIPKNOT! :p I still love them though)
What were you expecting? It's Slipknot. They've been pretty awful for years now.
