MK9 brought back Kenshi and Quan Chi.
MKX brought back Shinnok, Bo Rai Cho, and Tanya.
MK11 brought back Frost and Fujin.

We're getting a slow drip reintroduction of 3D-era characters in each game, be it via the base roster or DLC. In my opinion, each of them has been done some damn good justice by NRS in their reintroductions. With MK12 on the horizon, let's assume we're going to get 2 new 3D-era characters by the end of the game's lifetime as is on par with the prior three games. Which two do you all think they'll choose this time around now that the majority of the seemingly "obligatory" characters are done?

Remaining unused 3D-era characters:
MK4
Jarek
Reiko
Kai

Deadly Alliance
Mavado
Hsu Hao
Li Mei
Nitara
Drahmin

Deception
Dairou
Darrius
Hotaru
Shujinko
Kobra
Ashrah
Kira
Havik

Armageddon
Taven
Dagon
Sareena (technically Mythologies)
Meat (technically MK4)

MK4
Quan Chi
Fujin
Reiko
Tanya
Shinnok

Deadly Alliance
Kenshi
Li Mei
Nitara
Drahmin

Deception
Ashrah
Havik
Hotaru
Onaga

Armageddon
Taven
Daegon
Sareena

All were alive 500 years ago or are awoken mid-story.

I think there is a question about Kenshi, but he was portrayed as medieval here:

My answers will always be the same:

1) This angelic Shinto demon hunter...

2) And this beautiful demon to be hunted....

The perfect conflict of MK's blend of Eastern mythology and Western gothic darkness.
Still sad at Ashrah not being included in MK11. She, Havik, and Hotaru would have been perfect inclusions. Havik being an anti-hero cause he hates the idea of Kronika forcing her order on reality. Hotaru being full on villain following Kronika due to said order. Ashrah caught in between as working towards her freedom via feeding the kris evil souls could make her a wildcard as the timelines were colliding.

I think there's a lot of good candidates that can get dope overhauls. Imo:
  • Li Mei (was unplayable in MKX)
  • Havik (people were begging on their knees during MK11)
  • Reiko (dope design, hasn't appeared since 4)
  • Sareena (Skarlet replacement probably)
  • Nitara (we need a big girl)
  • Ashrah (maybe Raiden won't make it in, she can be the pointy hat person)

lol I'm the only vote for Kira. She should be the Black Dragon rep. People will think she's brand new because nobody cares about Kira but me.

Hara-Killer

Reverse Salt
Nitara gonna make it and now NRS gonna make her like Kata Backinsale from Underworld series
Havik will make it too
Reiko but dunno if they gonna make him in medium frame or Buff giant like 2021 movie
I Want Ginger Kai or Kill Monger Kai

Eddy Wang

Skarlet scientist

These are my picks as well

everyone often simps over sareena too much, but i gotta say the Sisterhood of Shadows are the three of them or none of them.

Kia and Jataaka deserves Equal Shot too and i think they would be amazing in a modern MK game.

My picks are
Firegod as Raiden's and Fujin's Cousin (not Liu Kang, the one from mythologies)
Kia, Jataaka and Sareena (Each a character to it's own)
Ashrah, Havik, Hotaru (Because you can't have Chaos Realm without Order Realm)

A Nice Rivalry between Nitara and Skarlet, would be awesome, but i would love Skarlet to play more as the MK9 style, while Nitara would take on the role Skarlet played in MK11 gameplay wise.

For realistic options, I wouldn't be shocked to see Havik or Sareena. Slightly more farfetched, Nitara would be my #1 choice because I'd be excited to see what a modern design would look like for her. Totally outlandish, but a re-design of Drahmin would be dope.

Not gonna lie, I never had any issue with Drahmin's original design, in fact I absolutely loved his Japanese oni mask and monstrous minimalism. His design is simple yet deeply rooted in classic Eastern mythology and reminded me of one of the stop motion zombies from the classic 1987 movie 'A Chinese Ghost Story', crossed with that eternally stunning Japanese demon imagery. I was actually quite saddened to read that Ed Boon considered him one of the most disappointing characters they'd created, when for me he felt worthy of MK1's original Oriental lore that drew me into the series in the first place.

I vastly prefer that supernatural Eastern mythology mashup any day to the just very Western fetishistic and military or gothic death metal imagery that the MK franchise has been a bit too eager to adopt ever since MK3.

To me Drahmin is more 'Mortal Kombat' than the likes of Erron Black, Nightwolf or the Kombat kids will ever be, and the very reason I love Ashrah so much. The more Mortal Kombat reminds me of A Chinese Ghost Story, the happier I am, since that's the tone I love the most from the series. For that reason I'll always prefer Shujinko, Drahmin, Ashrah, Fujin and Bo Rai Cho (flatulence notwithstanding, I'd much prefer him as a respectful grand old master) over the likes of Taven, Darrius, Dairou, Daegon and yes, even Havik.

For that reason alone, for me Kitana's 'Summer Heat' skin is the best she's ever looked, because it's classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema

Yeah, for sure, all good points. I always thought Drahmin had a cool design too, I just also think NRS does a good job reimagining characters even in subtle ways between games to give them a fresh coat of paint. I'd be excited to see what they did with him just from an aesthetic perspective.

Havik and Reiko.

Honorable mentions: Hotaru, Li Mei, Nitara, Sareena.
These are my picks, but swap Reiko with Li mei. Dunno, I feel like they can go crazy with Li mei while Reiko is still, at his essence, a cross between Shao Kahn and Noob Saibot, just like Takeda is Kenshi+Scorpion, which might limit how original his rework might get.

Honestly, those six need to be in MK12. Plus Quan Chi, Tanya and Kenshi. Nine 3D era characters. Maybe even Ashrah for a perfect 10.

What about Fujin, Drahmin, Onaga, Daegon and Taven?

Surely you don't think these don't deserve to be in just to have the same repeated characters from the SF or Black Dragon.
