I don't think thats true. Only reason Mileena fans have been so ravenous lately is because their character missed a game. Scorpion, Sub Zero and Kitana fans don't have to worry about their character missing a game so they aren't as absurdly vocal.

Scorpion was not in the original release of MK3.

And I would say Mileena is one of the most popular female characters, in most 'lists' you find online she's always above Kitana, by a lot.

i mean it was an analogy. Chun Li is the female face of SF and Kitana is the female face of MK.
Kitana was added in to deception so clearly there was some demand there. I’m very positive if it was the other way around and Mileena was in this game instead of kitana, we would’ve seen the same outcry, but probably not as pathetic

NRS players are funny because they always try to act like the most popular characters are overrated and meh. There is next to nobody as popular as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Mileena, Kitana, Raiden, Liu Kang and Jax. They're mainstays for a reason, people love them and NRS clearly feels they need to be in nearly every title one way or the other. Even when they miss the "original" game nine times out of ten they get added in all expansions and this has been the case for all of the above since MK2 onward (UMK3, MKGold, Unchained, UMK11, etc) and this is with few exceptions like MKVDC.

If people were talking about Jade, Baraka, Smoke or other characters that NRS are hot and cold on that might be valid, but not for Mileena or any of the MK1 or MK2 mainstays mentioned above.

NRS and the community have their must haves and Mileena's popularity seems to have grown to her being considered a "must have" akin to the other aforementioned characters.

I feel like NRS knows Mileena and Kitana are far more popular in the MK community, but Sonya Blade is far more synonymous with the name Mortal Kombat to the mainstream audience (I attribute that to her multiple movie, cartoon, and spin-off appearances).

It really does feel like NRS is making a conscious effort to ween the mainstream off of her though. Mileena has been featured prominently in advertisements since Deception (including an appearance in the new MK movie), and even Kitana was featured in the MK11 commercial. It’s clear who NRS wants as the female representatives of their game, but Sonya has a lot of legacy behind her, regardless of how tired the community may be of her.

yep, there are some legacy characters that are very much needed to be in MK games due the natural popularity among the ultra hardcore passionate MK fanbase ..... no argument here, hehe

they bring huge hype level and help MK to stay as one of the most beloved fighting games franchises ever made .... the sales numbers of the new modern games (MK9, MKX and now MK11) confirm that

Sub-Zero, Scorpion , Kitana and Mileena, definitely hold this kind of traditional classic characters "much needed to be present" status, so, they are necessary and essential to be in every new MK game from MK9 until now, and in future ....

you see, Capcom will always consider to keep Ryu, Ken, Chun Li and Guile coming into their Street Fighter games, so, the same logic applies to MK series as well, hehe

Except Base MK3, Base MK4, Base MK Deception...

You don't have to simp for Kitana because I'm not attacking her, so chill. I'm not big on Kitana but I don't hate her, She's okay. I like her more than Sonya who's become stagnant lately But people start to overstate the importance of these female characters with "She's just like Chun Li!" Mileena included. You're not the first person to make that comparison and it annoys me. They're popular characters sure but nowhere near Chun Li.

Let people start to miss these characters so their return is actually exciting.

Remember when people cheered when Baraka dropped in during the big reveal?
Hell look at the reaction for Mileena because she took a tiny little break from X to DLC in 11
