Mortal Kombat 11 (MK11) Kombat League

The new game mode for entry 11 in the fighting game franchise was officially revealed by the franchise's co-creator of Ed Boon in a video posted to his Twitter account on Monday, June 17th.

According to the video posted by Ed Boon, the MK11 ranked League will allow each mortal player to compete against other players in various ranks that start at the level of Apprentice and progress all of the way to the level of Elder God beginning on Tuesday, June 18th. This first season for the MK11 ranked League will be known as the Season of Blood and will be a four week long seasonal ranked mode where players will be able to test their skills against players of the same skill level. Wins in the ranked sets will earn players points. Each ranked set in the Mortal Kombat 11 ranked game mode will be a best two out of three.

There will be a total of nine ranks that players can progress through. Players will be rewarded with exclusive cosmetic items each time they move up a rank in the Mortal Kombat 11 league game mode. You will be rewarded with the cosmetic items from the highest rank you achieved in each season even if you drop down in rank by the conclusion of the current season. There will also be a variety of challenges players can complete in each season of the MK11 ranked league that will award even more rewards.

This overall system seems cool. Rewards of varying degrees for those who participate, the better you do the better the rewards. Now the Online-centric players have exclusive kosmetics they can earn in the game mode they prefer.

I don't plan on going online for a while, but I'm glad online only players have something to play for.

I'll also enjoy when they start to complain about the point system and not getting rewards like they should and I'll write; "If you're playing MK KL just for the exclusive skins and gear, then you're mot playing for the right reasons."

Heh.

fun fact; the people complaining about not being able to unlock rewards are literally never going to play this mode.
While I'm sure there's some, I doubt that's completely true. I still remember people who did play Ladder in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne complaining about the top portraits and how it would take too many wins to get them.

Heck, I never got them for my own Race, but never expected to. Was damn proud of that Doom Guard I earned from Tournament match wins though.

Here are some issues with rewarding exclusive skins by tier:
  • The system is designed to fill out the 9 tiers. Everyone can't just "get good" and rise to the God tiers, because the bar for the low levels will just rise as people get better.
  • It prevents the young, the old, and the physically and mentally challenged from getting "the coolest stuff", even if they paid $100 or $140 for the game after KP2.
  • IMO it will make the mode too competitive. Who will want to play their secondaries or play for fun when every loss will take you further away from the top rewards? And then obviously people losing to "gimmicks" or hitboxes or OP characters will be complaining even more loudly, and rightly so, since they're actually losing out on things now.
  • I also think it's ridiculous to lock any gameplay moves to challenges in a season, like the brutality icon in the video. "Oh you bought MK11 3 months after it was out? Sorry, this awesome brutality for your main is gone forever."
I would've greatly preferred the Fortnite route where you get XP for playing and everyone can get all of the rewards.
But hey, I'm a noob. Don't @ me. :)

Edit: I just had a good idea though: everyone with multiple console accounts should go on KL and lose with those accounts so we can fill out the bottom tiers with non-players. :D

I disagree. There is enough cool stuff in the game to collect outside of the KL to unlock for anyone. If there is no incentive to get something that not everyone will get, something that should be seen as a great achievement to players who are serious about fighting games, then there is no point in ranks at all.

Those skins look dope, that Error, Scarlet, Scorpion skin omg.
Wonder what the alternates Look like?

I don't like that its FT2 instead of FT3.

I wonder if we get skins for our most used character or not?

To add to this, Ranked and Kombat League are meant to be extremely competitive, not less competitive. @RexAeterna If you want to play for fun, you absolutely can, and that's what Casual matches are for. Not every kosmetic item is going to be available to everyone.

So you're telling me you've never played ranked before because it didn't have exclusive rewards? Lol. Competitive people play because they love to compete and improve and try to be the best. It has nothing to do with exclusive rewards.

That's not what I said. It's a bonus sure, but getting a reward not everyone can get is not a bad thing, it's even better for competitive players cause it gives them even more incentive to learn and get better. Actually, it will do that to even the least competitive people because they want these rewards as well, so they'll work hard and maybe they won't get it, but they'll improve a lot.

My 2c on the notion that skins being locked away in a comp mode and that it's unfair cause people don't think they'll ever be good enough or have time to get good. I've always thought that was kinda a lame IRL OS to saying you don't care enough to improve and wanna make excuses which is kinda sad to see in a competitive minded forum like TYM. If you have a physical or mental handicap to getting better then that's different but even then it's not impossible (ex. Brolylegs, WheelsFGC)

You have to realize that most "pro" players besides like the top 16 are also students or work to support themselves outside of playing games, playing videogames and streaming isn't their full time thing for many of them. SylvherRye is a father AND competes at a high level! And this notion that you have to play this game 8+ hours a day to get good enough to be a high rank, NOT EVEN COMPETE AT TOURNIES LIKE THE PROS, but just do good online is really getting tiresome. Most pros don't even practice that much. Time spent playing =/= Skill at the game, it's not a 1:1 comparison.

As a full time student including summer I only get about 2-3 real hours a night playing this game and I still have a high winrate and do decent at my locals. If you spend 8 hours a day playing AI battles/towers/krpyt or mindlessly playing casual without thinking about why you won/lost and going to practice mode to lab out the things that cost you the match or the things you need to learn for the MU instead of blaming chars, are you really improving? In my honest opinion anyone here can become a decent player with only like 2-3 hours of QUALITY practice and not even everyday. Lab your chars, run defense drills, figure out whats beating you and find consistent training partners of around your skill level and most importantly, be willing to learn. If everyone here had the right mindset you'd all be Elder Gods, free.

Lol at people complaining about not being able to access skins because of the tiers.. life’s not fair.. get gud bruh.

It’s literally a prize for winning. It’s like bitching about not getting prize money in a tournament when you come in 32nd place. No participation trophies here. If anything it should motivate you to get better..

I think this is awesome from nrs!

I've never seen complaining like this in League for the skins exclusive to certain tier ranks, it'll prolly be a fair bit easier to reach higher ranks with this than most others. I aint super hot about most of these skins vuz Red & Black aint ever really been my scheme but I'll grind for em.

The skins look nice, lol ha I just finished the Gauntlet which was a PAIN!! This looks pretty cool. Was hoping it was something like a legit Kombat League of sorts or something where they have weekly or monthly tournaments with real money prizes(online only of course) at set times etc but this looks neat.
