Tournament vs Default Variations? (A question for those with early access)

Hey guys,

I’ve read on Twitter that apparently, there are two different sets of pre-made variations. There are the default ones for training mode, local versus, possibly story, etc; and a different set in the tournament mode and possibly ranked.

Also, these tournament variations are not available in practice mode.

Is this true? It seems kind of crazy to have to make a custom variation to lab a non-customizable tournament variation.

I don’t have the game yet, so can anyone that does please clarify this? Thanks in advance.

It seems like that's the case. But you are able to customize the variations and set them up like the tournament ones, and then lab with that.

Do custom variations save if you power off the game?

I know they didn’t in the beta, but I just want to make sure they fixed that for the full game.

Was about to say aren't the tourney/competitive the same as the default ones? Cause this shit would get a bit confusing honestly if they did the other thing lol
It seems like they are different from the tournament ones, which is stupid.

I really wouldn’t care if the tournament ones were selectable in training and single player. I don’t feel like making 50 custom variations for these tournament variations to lab against, and modify them if required by future patches.

Wow lol. I hear ya man. Agreed. Seems like the variation system is causing more negative feedback, than positive. May be time to scrap them in MK 12.

If they’re not going to let the custom variation system rock, I think I’d honestly prefer non-variation characters with a few more slots on the roster.

Same. Plus I mean they can always change this rule for the future, OR simply have some tourneys with customs allowed and some not allowed at the very least. At least online we'll have plenty of options the custom matches, rooms, KOTH's, player match rank, rank match etc, etc But yeah definitely want more freedom with it. Some believe the modes online that allow for custom variations(not counting the augment power ups I don't think anyone wants that in competitive on or offline) will do better than the ranked matches due to it's limitations.

Every character has 5 or so preset variations, meant mostly for lazy or casual players who don't wanna mess with customization or just wanna try stuff out. A lot of them are themed or lore based. Again, these are meant for fun or a starting point. Then each character has two tournament presets. Sometimes one of the presets will be the same as a tournament preset, or very similar, but sometimes they're totally unique. By default when you first play every character has two load outs with one of the presets, NOT the tournament presets, but one of the regular presets. So if you go into practice mode or non-tournament versus mode and you haven't set anything up they'll have those presets.

To make your character have the tournament presets for practice mode or non-tournament mode you have to set them up. It doesn't take long though. Go into kustomize, go to ability select, tap the 1 button and the presets menu pops up. The two tournament presets have trophy symbols next to them. So what I recommend everyone do if you're a serious player is make two load outs per character, one for each of the two tournament load outs.

I appreciate the reply 16 Bit!

Just a quick question, is it possible to allow the tournament variations to be accessible in training?

I am glad there’s a button to press to load the abilities, but still doing this for 50+ variations and modifying if required for future patches could become confusing and messy.

Thanks.

wait what's the difference between a preset and a load out

Yeah, I support PlusFrames and everybody else who wants to have tournament variations as default everywhere. I think it makes sense to have them as default, because a casual player wouldn't care about it much and would go and set his own, and at the same time it will be much comfortable to go and lab your character and MUs without going and setting tournament variations. Anyway, thank you for clarification, 16 Bit.

So we have to set them up for practice mode, for every character we want to use when we first start the game since their default might not necessarily be tournament variations? Just want to be clear here, because that seems very sluggish
For every character you want to use and for any variations you want to train to defeat. Surely NRS is going to fix this, as it seems they're dissuading us from using the entire system they designed for us to use...

This seems like a disorganised mess... I only have interest in playing the tournament variations really as I guess that’s what will be used in competitive ranked? Having to find out what the tournaments variation is, and creating it just seems really unnecessary and I don’t understand why they would not have these as a pre made variation. Bit disappointing

Well as 16 Bit said you can press the preset button, I think it is square on PS4, and you’ll be able to choose the tournament variations which seem to be a preset, so you don’t have to remember what the abilities are, but yeah, still tedious and potentially messy, especially after patches.

Yes, you would have to set up the tournament variations yourself for practice mode for now. Some of the preset variations are similar to the tournament ones, but on the whole, you would still have to set up the tournament variations for practice mode.

I prefer that the tournament ones were just set up for practice mode as default ready to go, hopefully, NRS makes that happen in a future patch down the line.
