"Strength isn't everything"
If we could have the additional special moves selectable and changeable as an option for tournament play, without using the gear pieces that physically buff the characters damage and damage taken, would we be in favour of it?

Essentially, a mini variation system.

For example, being able to change Batman's Parry move in general, or add his downward batarang for certain matches that he would struggle with?

I am only using Batman as the example, please make this thought process relevant to your character. Im looking at you Atrocities players wanting that straight safe blast thing...

HOW WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE?
My solution as to how this would be possible, is to make additional moves all already unlocked from the start instead of being collectable items by levelling up. Only have gear pieces and shaders as the collectable items.

Just like having your characters specific costume loaded even if you choose the competitive play option, your chosen moves are also playable without adding the gear piece properties.

That would be the only solution if anyone thought it would be a good idea.

Otherwise, just no. Stock character move sets across the board. I think some characters could get around some seriously troubling areas with the option for a different move in their arsenal, and of course, certain characters could create other problems for characters with certain moves added. But, this could be the case in the bread and butter form anyway.

Personally, id rather that characters just have access to their entire move set, in any game.

Discuss!

If NRS wants us to swap or add special moves in competitive mode they'll streamline the feature in a way that makes it easy to do while in character select. There's no reason to assume otherwise.

Them separating the moves instead of tying them to gear pieces speaks volumes towards their intent behind move costumization, imo.

Matchup altering moves = more of a character to learn = a good thing.

I think this poll can be useful, if we can show NRS that we want the alternate moves to be accessible in competitive play maybe they'll figure out how to add them in.

Something like having a mini-menu you can access in tournament mode where you can choose your 2 slot moves from the character select screen, similar to picking the capsules in Budokai 2/3 (there are probably better examples but that's what popped up in my head lol).

There are a lot of possible obstacles to this atm;
-The moves being locked and TOs would have the trouble of checking if all moves are on all consoles. checking DLC and patches is exhausting enough as it is.
-having to go to a different menu to access them which means it takes too much time to set them up.
-if the moves are tied to gear and stat changing stuff.
-The community having a split decision if they're allowed or not (however the split won't be there if the above issues are resolved).

Personally I'm hyped for the possibles that the alternate moves add and if it's possible to implement them in competitive play I say we should go for it.

This would be great although pre-match key setup and move setup will probably be horrible since they have to go in the menu and save a preset.
there could be a code to memorize and input in the character screen for a certain layout.

I'm not in favor of this. I dislike custimization factors like this personally. I want my batman, to be like everyone's batman.

Besides that will take more time for them that they could use to balance the game, only Paulo knows how bad the balance will be at the release.

If they can work out a way to do it.. then sure. This as a sudo-variation system is what many of us expected the gear system to be.

Still the Gear System, imo, is a total fail and while it will prove popular with the casual crowd, and lets face it that is who this game is made for, already in the beta nearly all the matches I play have requested the system turned off. As THOSE are the variations people want to practise for their offline events.

After a while of being out, I doubt you will ever find a gear match, as if you are a pro, you want even footing to play and practise, and as a casual you do not want to face a guy with 5000 games and gear that owns you.

The gear system should have been mega awesome... but I feel that it is a real fail, have to wait and see how it fully pans out.. but there are serious issues here.

Again, the idea of selecting gear choices to change your moves and normals as a custom variation system sounded godlike.. but this is "just turn it all off" competitive mode is a fail. Why play in ANY other mode, if all the muscle memory and moves and combos will not be able to be used in the offline scene or in the majority of late teir online play?

No, no and no.

First of all, players will spend a lot of time to choose their moves. Secondly, there could be a lot of new moves for every character. Like 20 for Batman, 20 for Superman etc. With 31 characters this going to be annoying. 600+ new special moves, you really need this?! Next one, NRS won't make all new special moves available at the start of the game. 0% chance. Only with $$$ to unlock. And the last one. Balance in this game could be really bad at the start. Even with tournament mode. We believe in the bright future, but... Without all those new moves we'll get better chances to get reasonable fixes, buffs and nerfs.

They could EASILY do this.

Think of CoD's create a class. They give you X amount of slots...some perks cost 1 slot, some 2.

Think of this nearly the exact same way.

You have certain move slots comparative to grenade slot... like air specials for Batman.

Then you have your ground normals.

Let's say you have a bf3 slot and a list of specials that can go in that slot but some cost more than others.

Ofc air batarangs will cost more than air sparkles for Batman.

But this would allow you to literally take away the bs stuff and simply mold a character to your liking. If a move is broken, just ban that specific move and people can still use the character.

A lot easier to balance than variations.

Maybe after you select a character, it takes you to a customize screen where both players can customize their characters.

Boon said specifically that he wouldn't make special moves microtransactions and I believe him.

I would like this to be in a tournament that isn't so big and later down the games life cycle.
Possibly this will be a great thing to do 2 years into it. When the meta is already set. Most people would be familiar with a lot of the gears. It will bring new life into the game and we can finally have two nrs games thriving at the same time (IJ2 & MK11

It's all so very confusing.
with way the moves that in beta atm way they are now, 200% no

like to know out of the 13 yes's so far who has the beta+unlocked those moves (only know glue has beta)
I dont have the beta, but I voted yes.. I

A, this is a BETA. Locking out a feature for future use because its unbalanced or ridiculous right now seems a little shortsighted.

B, I would ASSUME this is based on the assumption that these moves are going to be balanced. If they are just an add-in batshit insanity kind of thing then of course not, but assuming the moves, or a CLASS of them (tourney balanced/legal) are added and actively part of the balancing process for competitive play, I honestly don't understand the resistance to this idea.

ASSUMING both balance and a streamlined method of choosing the moves - I literally cannot see a bad side to this, and again, this being a beta, making decisions based on current balance seems like a bad idea. Now, admittedly, that argument works both ways, but I'm sure you see my point.

As to streamlining the system, I don't see why there couldn't be a drop-down box when you select your character, that lists the moves. Just scroll and click what you want. Similar to how you choose a costume now.

Balance isnt an issue on moves that NRS decides arent meant for tourney play, so they tag certain moves (Shazzy mentioned making Superman's Super unblockable.. if thats a real thing, that should not be legal obviously) as casual/fun, and the rest are designed to be used and are balanced accordingly. Is that a tall order for NRS? Yeah, but I mean, we have like a hundred variations in MKX right now, so I dont see it being that much taller an order than what they've been tasked with up until now - and really, the latest iteration of MKXL is the most balanced the game has ever been. Its not perfect, but its a damn sight better than previous iterations which gives me some hope for NRS's competence in general.

As ive said before, you winnerlock the skills chosen, just like we lock character/variation now.

I just see this as a huge boon to the game. It opens up the options and strategy and depth, it *could* allow characters to be tailored to better make up bad MUs and make good ones better.

If its a balance or setup clusterfuck, then nope, but Id rather be optimistic this early on rather than gloom and dooming it all.

Gunslinger since pre patch (sh/out to The Farmer)
I like Batman's Boomerang Bat so I'm down for this being able to be used in tournaments lol

Solomon Gorondy

Should Goro be top 5?
I think the gear system will be treated as a preprogrammed patching system for the developers. Imagine a character has really poor anti-airs that ruin his chances at competition while it just so happens that he has a gear selection that fixes the problem... one hot-fix later and the gear's buff becomes permanent while the gear is either deleted or has it's legendary effect changed to something else.

I believe he means that you won't be able to buy an unique move and get some advantage.Which doesn't mean you can't unlock regular moves for money. Comparison to MKX, you can unlock all hidden Brutalities in the Krypt with koins or instantly unlock everything with real money.
