Memorable but Terrible Tournament-Going Experiences

Hey guys, we the scum of the earth offline elitists were talking about some of our shitty tournament experiences and how despite them being awful we would still make all those sacrifices and more for the community. I was wondering what are some of the terrible moments you went through to be able to compete and hang out with the offline community. I have a bunch of stories:

- Driving 16 hours in Zyphor's murder-car of death. So, coming back from Combo Breaker we got majorly screwed by the airline (Spirit, figures). They booked us on Monday when we were supposed to come back on Sunday. Rebooking it was more expensive than buying a new one, so I asked Zyphor if he could drive us (me, Reo and Pikachu) for paper money. God bless him but Jesus christ, we took his ex-gf car that had NO brakes, an effy cruise control and headlights that were as powerful as the light on my phone. So we drove in the middle of the night, 10 hrs Zyphor and the rest myself. Half-asleep, with no visibility and the worst brakes in history of cars. But we made it just fine and even recorded this gem:

- Driving 9 hours from TCW last year. So I figured 6 hours wasn't as bad coming back around 9pm. I could get 6 hrs to sleep and arrive to work late. Now, leaving VA into Delaware, there's a highway where the speed limit is 40 mph. Gandyman and myself had this wonderful idea of NOT driving through the coast line and avoid that highway. Big mistake. 5 hours in, we see this tiny little flickering light in the middle of the highway. I slow down when suddenly a dude shows up in the middle of nowhere. I lose control of the car for a little bit but manage to dodge him. Gandy screams at him that we can't see him, the dude replies "it's the only thing I got, there's a dead body here". So we turn to the left and there's this poor person, or parts of a person, spilled all over the highway. Almost as if he got run over, then several other cars went over him. Just as we were looking at him the patrol cars arrive from the other direction and make us go the other way. Siri takes us to some backwoods 1 lane street in the middle of nowhere, you know where people get killed and disappear in movies. In the end it took us 9 hours to get home. I was hallucinating while awake at some point, and the drivers at those hours are really, really bad. Poor Gandy had to take a train as soon as we arrived back to NY (extra 2 hours for him). I called work and told them I wasn't going to make it lol.

- Mexico's tournaments. 8 hour bus rides for 10 man tournament with 1 laggy CRT and Under The Mayo's monitor and one of the worst communities I've been to. Yeah, half of those guys were pretty unbearable but hanging out with UnderTheMayo was always the absolute best. I'd take those godawful bus trips all over again.

- Coming back from MLG Dallas 2012. I lived in Mexico back then. I scheduled the shuttle before hand to save some money. Problem is the shuttle company screwed up and picked me up super late, making me miss my flight. I had to re-buy one to Guadalajara, that's 2-3 hours away from my hometown. I ended up arriving around 2 am in this VERY shady bus station in the middle of Mexico with my laptop and my hitbox. The next bus left at 7am. I was awake for 5 hours clutching at my stuff scared to death. During the "pre-screening" (yeah like low tier TSA), a woman threw my hitbox and passed it through the xray machine, effectively breaking it. I couldn't get that hitbox fixed after that and had to buy a new one. Ggs. Still one of if not the best tournament I've ever been to.

- On a lesser extent, driving 6 hours to go to Virginia with Decay and Indecisive for a 15 man local in a game I really didn't like. Basically just because I got a ticket for speeding (see the 40 mph highway in the story above). Besides that, it was a long ass trip but I loved every second of it.

So yeah, what are some of your stories? I know some people think that we're super rich because we travel a lot, but really don't take into account the fact that we're usually rooming with 8 other dudes and sleeping in the floor or not eating the whole day. It'd be nice to put things in perspective a little bit.

Flying from Indianapolis to Northern California to compete in a grass roots Tournament, my old team & I started the year prior. Having a layover in LAX on the way there and Detroit on the way back. All for a tournament we ran out of his basement for 26 people (from California, Seattle, Arizona & Nevada) just to go 1-2 and have to spend each night huddled up to a space heater to keep warm while sleeping on carpet with minimal blankets & pillows.

Very small pot, but still the best time I've had.

I have a story OP knows all too well!

So I go with one of my buds to this guy named @RM Cossner house to play some MKX. Met him through Cossner also which was cool. He told me the drive was like an hour and forty minutes, but it ends up being a little over two hours. No biggie. Maybe I was driving slow. So we get there and it's super chill. People playing MKX, REO playing MK9, Brady playing Diablo, Cossner pissing me off with Reptile, all is good. Pizza gets ordered, lots of talk, everyone has a good time.

Then it happens.

A GOAT level blizzard starts coming down. So extreme that you can barely see out the window. Tv starts saying that it's a safety risk to even step outside. Now it's getting late and my girl is blowing up my phone about when I'm coming back. I try to stall so I can stay at Cossner's but she isn't having it, so we gotta go. Car is fully covered in snow so I know it's gonna be rough. We leave and we're driving in snow so deep that you can barely see tires. Blizzard is so extreme we literally can't see and have to drive 20 mph. At one point I heard a BOOM and we were running off the road and I scratched the side of my tire (which I had to pay to fix lol). Another part I went like 10 extra mph and the car almost started spinning. We started making those "are we gonna make it back alive?" jokes. We starting recording videos of how crazy the weather was because at this point all we can do is laugh. Just when we thought it couldn't get worse I was running low on gas. So now we're driving on the E on the highway in uber storm LOL. I eventually found one though after getting off an exit in NYC. By the time I dropped him off and got home it took 3 and a half hours lol.

Still was a hella experience and fun. Smiling while typing this out lol.

Making Top 5, being the happiest man alive. The tournament comes to an end and suddenly I find out that my bag is missing. Cellphone, personal stuff, controller and most importantly...MY PASSPORT!

So I was walking to my hotel, trying to get into my room. The reception lady asks for my ID, which I didn't have. gg wp, no room for me (I was able to pay, but they would not accept me without papers).

It was about 3 am at that time. I figured that I was just going to the airport and try to get myself back to Germany. I search for my flight when two Police Officers come to my way, hit me with all kind of questions and saying that I looked suspicious (I didn't even have a bag with me, just me and my 'fro). I actually got stopped twice, by different officers. They then told me that I was at the terminals for flights to Tel Aviv :S

Long story short, a person steals my bag with all sorts of stuff and I barely make it back to Germany. Still worth the Top 5 though :D

Haha I know right! We had a death wish that night.

I wish I still lived in NYC. There were so many great ways to get games. There isn't shit to go to for locals in MKX in Jacksonville unless you drive much, much farther out. :(

I think people who don't go offline for whatever reason really don't know what they're missing man. Even the bad times are good times lol.

It's too soon to get cocky.
Now the video of REO makes sense in the OP. I always wondered where it came from, but still think there's more of a backstory to it

Pikachu and I make fun of Reo because back in MK9 he used to say "new tech has been brought to my attention" in every tech video he ever made. So we forced him to say it for lols.
Lmfao never knew that since i wasn't around for MK9. Good to know LOL

It was my first event that I was actually traveling for. The trip was going to be a good 4+ hour trip to Northern Virginia at some college campus. It was Mr Aquaman, Yams, Virtiqal and myself in Yams car. This car was a two door model where you had to pull the front seat up to get in. So it was jammed with 4 people in it.

This was my first time driving with Yams and let it be known never again. In the first hour we almost get into a car accident from his reckless driving.

When we get to the area of the event it takes a good 40 minutes to find parking cause it's a college campus. In that time Yams makes a u-turn in the middle of a residential area when people were behind us so that was another near life death experience.

Somehow we made it in one piece and compete. I lose first round but end up making it to top 8 getting 7th. Aqua got 5th and Yams got 3rd losing to KevoDaMan's Fisticuffs Johnny (back when he was good). Yams ended up throwing his pad which was actually my spare I'd been letting him borrow.

On the super salty ride home it began to storm badly and we we're never seen from ever again.

Rest in Peace Sova.

BIG E's MKX Invitational Tournament.
So for this tournament me and Darth Arma both hosted honeybee at our homes. I hosted him the last night and was going to drive him and myself to Claude von Strokes house and he was going to drive me/CD Mani to the tournament. Find out very last minute that Claude had no idea what time the event was and ended up bailing on use saying he couldn't take us. I also get a message on Facebook from tyrant asking if he could get a ride. Mind you Tyrant was about 45 minutes in the opposite direction from where we had to go. Was able to convince Jonnitti to give Tyrant a ride so i wouldn't have to give tyrant a ride. Then as me and Honebee are about to leave my house CD Jr messages us and asks for a ride. This was about 20 minutes out of the way for us. Decided whatever and picked him up. Had to remind him to give me some gas money when we go to the event. Claude ends up showing up later Rip. Had fun at the event repping canada. Still have the flag Honeybee let me keep. CD Jr got a ride home from Claude. Honeybee stayed so he could get a bus home. I had to drive home at around 12am by myself tired.

- Summer Jam X - Coming back from the event me, Zwei, carnage and Outworld were caught in the most stupid storm we can ever get caught in.

- Summer Jam X - Mine, Zwei, Carnage and Outworld ALL had something missing from controllers to sync cables. That shit was ridiculous.

- Went to a local a few months back and I paid $10 to get in. Only to find myself BY MYSELF playing MKX. Ain't get a refund either... Fuuuuckk.

- Winter Brawl X - I was rooming with Magician and Take$$$ and then room was COLD AS FUCK!!!! Also Forever King was snoring loud as hell because he was drunk lol. Made it difficult to stay asleep. But it turned out alright because me and @XxDark_ discovered this tight ass room.

Driving 3 hours in a blizzard. Share a room with 6 people, no extra blankets, skipped out on their share of the room... Got to meet a few dudes so fair trade

Wow, I had no idea how far you guys go for these tourneys. My hat's off to you guys for pursuing your hobby/passion. I have a newfound level of respect for you guys pushing your limits.

KIT 2015 was my first out of state major. Spent i think like 4-5 hours in the car with @AK L0rdoftheFLY and listened to him talk to his wife the whole ride but at least i got to read the injustice comics.

Then i somehow survived through @Smarrgasm 's extreme snoring. I swear i could feel that shit......but that's pretty much the negatives...i hate long car rides.

I didn't do well in the tournament but did finally get to play with people i never got to play with before. I either got bodied or did really well against them. Also seeing @RM Cossner body Fly with green arrow was pretty funny.

I did pretty decent in the team tournament too....even got my face as the thumbnail on the video, shout outs to @Digit!

Gonna try to travel more for inj2 but those are more on the side if anything haha

OH i almost forgot one of them. For final round 2014 i think it was. Drove me and Nitti to 7L's house. Got lost on the way cause my GPS said his house was at one place when it wasn't. On the way we went down a road we where not suppose to and found out that it was close cause their was a landslide that blocked part of the road. PA sucks. Get to 7L's house after he had to drive to find us, which is on a hill, on another hill, on top of the hill. Meet his family all very nice people. Then we wait around for about 45 Minutes waiting for zyphox. For someone who plays the flash *This was during injustice* he is late often. 7L drives stick and since nobody else could he had to drive the entire way. So we hit traffic in Va/DC area. Took about 1 hour+ to get through it. Then we had to pick up the man formally known as orochi. Which made the car unbearably cramped. Make it GA around 12pm 1pm. Meet doombawks and me and 7L basically pass out. Last day of final round find out there is a snow storm all along the east coast. Have to drive in it. Drive through the snowstorm going about 30 miles an hour behind a row of cars. See at least 5 cars crashed off the side of the road. Drop orochi off. Finally have space in the car. Get back to PA around mid morning. Drive nitti home and myself home half awake. Idk how i made it home. lol.
Trip was great though. BSing with everyone. Waffle house. etc. Would do it again.

Evo 3 years ago. Shared a room with 1 person I knew and 5 I didn't. They brought Marvel players in for casuals at and after 3 am for 2 days. Keep in mind I had 9 am pools for SFIV at the time.

On Sunday I went back to the room to get my badge for the Ballroom ($90 including 10$ for the tournament itself.)and found the badge missing from the top of my bag where I had left it.

Sent a message to the group text asking if anyone had seen it. Everyone stayed quiet until 1 of them sent back and I'm quoting now. "Have fun watching Grand Finals from your Phone "

Fortunately the one in "charge" was volunteering and lent me his badge so I could get into the ballroom. Still someone in the group stole my $90 badge and essentially mocked me for it knowing I'd never find them in a room of thousands of people while everyone covered for him.

Still, being the only one whose name was not on the room register I didn't feel much guilt of helping myself to the bottles of water in the Hotel MinI Fridge. They were Fiji, and fairly big bottles at that. Kept me hydrated all the way back to Indianapolis.

Get your guns on. Sheriff is back.
Showing up at a local convention for a tournament only to find out that none of the games had ever received any patches. I'm talking Sentinel with over a million health in Marvel, Bane with no dash in Injustice, and you literally had to fight as the world warriors only in SFIV because they NEVER UNLOCKED ANYONE. Thats right...it was not only the vanilla SFIV but unpatched. Nowhere near up to date. Hell the brawl players had to try and play through subspace emissary in the background before their tournament.

Complete garbage.
