What's new

MKX what were they thinking??

I honestly think they probably don't care as much about the competitive feel or the competitive mk community as far as keeping them happy with mechanics.. they are def more focused on insanely ez comeback factors and fast paced matches. Eliminating the big footsies / spacing game probably makes it seem a lot more appealing to the casual eye. Lot of people saw footsies in mk9 as "spamming and running".

Capcom is more toward catering to the competitive side of the franchise and making sure the fans are gettin more of what they loved in it, while adding little by little making each new game the same style, while adding a few new mechanics to keep it new and interesting.

I don't think NRS will ever be like this, because they never make the same games. Myself personally thought it would of been cool to keep Injustice things with the Injustice games and the MK the same feel as the Reboot (mk9) as far as the overall mechanical engine and footsies meta that so many people loved. I'm sure it was an accidently almost amazing game aside from a few tweaks some characters needed. They were on the right path though to making an even greater fine tuned system of what imo was on the way to being a masterpiece Mk9.

I for one still like this game it's cool and all, but I without a doubt feel like UMK9 woulda been perfectly fine with me as a new game :)
Who know's though maybe it'll change still pretty early in the games life, but i wouldn't be too suprised if it stays pretty much the same as it is now.

This is def just my personal opinion though everyone can like or dislike my opinion. I'm still giving this game a chance just because i just absolutely love Mortal Kombat. For how long, who knows :coffee:

So far, in tournaments this game has either been corner 50/50s, vortex or relentless (plus frame) up-close pressure. I completely agree that NRS seem to care less about competitive fighting games.

This may please a casual for a year or 2, but it will become flat. Fighting games need to have a competitive following in order to last... Gimmicks are short lived.

I am thinking of moving onto Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7 when they come out. They feel a lot more fun and fair at a competitive level

There it is...
I want to like mkx more than mk9 but even at the highest level, the game isn't played interestingly, i know its early, but every matchup seems to be who can get their 50/50's going. May as well watch competitive roulette.

Get on that hook
You might like Soul Calibur, huge move lists and most of them have some kind of use or viability.
Some of the moves are so similar though that you just use 1 over the other because it looks cooler.

I disliked Injustice because it was a game of "who gets to do their BS first" type of game but at least the BSes were varied. This game doesn't even have varied BSes. Just de fitty fitties

I think people overstate the footsie meta a bit in MK9.

Certainly, it was a bigger element than say, MK X. But there were characters whose toolkit was so oppressive as to make playing footsies against certain characters irrelevant. Sonya didn't much care about Quan Chi's footsie game, as a example. She could play her game and a lot of characters couldn't outfootsie her.

You see a lot of gimmicks early on in a game's life. We saw it with EVO for Injustice. Now, we all know the game, even with its 50/50s, drastically developed more from that first EVO.

It's true that you can't technically train yourself to guess better. Still, a lot of strings that aren't 50/50s aren't getting blocked, string gaps aren't getting exposed, there is a lot to learn.

A lot of people proclaimed MK9's death after it's first and second EVO. It thrived for three.

A lot of people proclaimed Injustice's death after it's first EVO. It would go on to have another.

So long as people are willing to host offline locals or travel to majors, the game won't die. If top players drop the game, other top players will rise to take their place. This isn't just true of the NRS scene. It's true of life. No one is an island and everyone is replaceable.

The game still has patches and two DLC characters left to go. The two balance fixes we received were steps in the right direction, so I'm hopeful.

Liked because Jade <3:oops::p

I haven't played a lot of MKX, but I have played a lot of MK9. It could be from my experience that I like MK9 a little more, but idk. The characters in MKX feel kind of dry. Although they are original characters, I think they could have been more creative with new characters like Jacqui and Cassie and maybe replaced them with more interestingly designed characters (for example, D'Vorah and Takeda are pretty cool new characters. They feel new and exciting, not just new characters they slapped in because they couldn't think of new ones.)

Although there weren't many new characters in MK9 (the only actually new character was Cyber Sub, amirite?) at least they all felt pretty unique and were fun to play/experiment with for the most part.
I'm sad that Jade is not in MKX (I can already feel the "she wasn't interesting anyway" comments coming), and I'm not super thrilled about Reptiles new moveset. I like his moves but he feels really different. I haven't had much time to really clock in some hours with him and really experiment though, so cut me a little slack there. I could be totally wrong about him being really different

Also I don't really get much of a craving to play MKX like I do MK9. Sometimes I'll go play with a few buddies of mine and sometimes while we're playing I just randomly start strongly feeling like playing MK9. Could be bias because I've played it longer and am more familiar, but still, something about it just doesnt thrill me.

Exactly... This game is so linear, however in yesterdays tournament, the most hype match was when Foreverking JR chose 'Relentless' Jason. It was hype because it was so unique and different compared to the other matches.

He most likely won because the other person had little match up experience. But it was interesting whilst it lasted...

If his opinion is that MK9 is better than MKX, then he's absolutely, aggressively false.
Why would he be wrong? How good a game is is 100% opinion.

Just because MKX is the newest iteration with more bells & whistles, doesn't automatically make it better than MK9. There are a shit ton of games out there where the newest iteration is considered inferior to the older iteration.

I'm not saying that MK9 is better, I'm saying he's not wrong if that's his opinion.

"I still got it...but not much of it"
This video is real talk, some really pointless shit devs waste money on making. And that's for every game, not just MK X.

Its more so with MKX. For example in Tekken, the moves considered useless can still be used depending on the style you wish to play the character. In MKX it seems there is only one style of play that is appropriate and logical.

I cannot understand how there are people who say that MK9 is better than MKX gameplay wise. By what logic? The balance was utter shit and there were characters that were pretty close to being called broken. There was no variety; many normals had universal properties among all characters and you couldn't cancel one full string into a special. Is it just because the game has dash cancels? Or that it didn't rely on 50/50's so much but rather on chipping someone to death?
