Getting my first Tattoo

Theme

Title says it all:

I'm getting a tattoo. I come from a traditional Asian family, but thank god my parents aren't exactly strict. My mom would freak for a little while, but then she would probably accept it soon enough.
Anyways, I want my first tattoo to be a significant one, and I may say, my last. Maybe down the road I would look into more, but this is what I am wanting right now.

Both are the version of Koi's, just different positioning.

Thats the concept design.

Next to it, I want to add 3 Chinese calligraphy symbols for

Courage
Faith
Family

For you veteran tattooists, how much do you think it would hurt? I am getting it on my right arm, bicep/triceps area. The pain wouldn't be a big deal to me, but I'd like to know on a scale of 1-10.

What do you guys think of this?

Well, obviously the first one is girly version, the second one - manly. I'd pick the second one. But if you're a girl, get the first.

just do this

ok don't do that.

Don't worry about the pain, man. After 10 minutes of a "prickly" feeling, your arm will just feel like an itchy bruise.

Well of course when I put the link of the second, I wold do adjustments to it. No flowers or anything.

Yeah, cool fish. The second just looks more badass, compare their faces (second is more badass expression, it's somewhat larger, also the thing on the forehead is larger which makes it manlier, the eyes are more aggressive and the stashes are like a khan's ones), their bodies (first is obviously more tender, slimmer, looks more fragile) and their fins (larger in the second version). Overall I think the second version is more badass. The second has a somewhat attacking stance, going down on you from the top, like a dragon or an eagle, while the first is more like a curving standing tall model. Anyway, this is my opinion.

Oh god that shit looks awful, spend your time not fucking yourself up.

At age 80: Why in the fuck do I have a fish.

Yeah I'll agree with you there.

Because it stands for something. Why dont you spend more time constructing more helpful comments instead of just bashing it then become condescending? No need for the rudeness...

I have both my arms done, full, and my advice would be to stay away from any sites relating to what the pain will be like. Nobody is the same as far as pain tolerance goes. Don't listen to anyone and just go get it done.

BUT I will say the bicep/tricep area is the easiest place to get it.

When I had my first ink done it just felt like pricks, that's all. As said though, pain tolerance varies.

Now, to continue my repertoire of being awesome:

first tattoo i ever got was a mudvayne tattoo on my right calf, as a drummer i thought it was a good place to have it as matt mcdonough (the drummer) was my main inspiration behind getting behind a kit in the first place. plus i wear shorts while i drum so may as well get it in a place everyone will see lol.

Anyone that tells you it's going to be the worst pain ever is lying, whatever the discomfort is you'll get used to it very quickly. Just don't worry about it and you'll be fine :)

Very easy, Theme. I'm not sure if you're asking because of how long it will take, but it won't look exactly like that either. There's so much shading there which is fine, but the artist will probably add more of a outline to it first.

Thanks for the input. How long do you figure that would take? I know it wont be exactly like that, but I was hoping for as close as possible.

It really depends on the size of the design as well as the artist. Some guys are efficient. Some are reeeeeaaaally slow. Plus there's a lot of shading in that. Bicep/tricep area is easy. Anything near a joint is going to hurt more than ususal. And the chest hurts like a motherfucker. I advise you to see what the tatooist's work looks like on flesh before commiting to them. Make sure they use fresh needles and ink. After you get the tattoo, keep it out of the sun. Put some Neosporin on it for a day or two. Then switch to anti-itch/moisturizer cream. And yes, I'm heavily tattooed.

It's so hard to say, man. I'm not sure how big you want it, but maybe anywhere between 1-3 hours?? Probably more like 1 and a half or 2. Depends on how big/color/etc...

I plan to make it around 5-6 inches long and 3-4 inches wide. Id love it if he can get it exactly how it is, but if its too much effort/money, I would remove some shading and whatnot. Some things aren't an issue for me.

It's not that it's too much effort/money, it's how good it will look on your body. The really, really light shading stuff is what I'm talking about. That drawing is done in pencil. The tattoo version will definitely be more prominent.

You just have to pick your shop wisely. There's places that will honestly tattoo anything on anyone. No matter how small or stupid it is. I've been going to the same shop forever because I know they're legit. They will seriously not tattoo something if it's too small, or just retarded. Two that I can remember them telling me about is some chick wanted a weed leaf on her foot, and some dude wanted a weed leaf on his face. Shit like that.

So I have decided I may wait till my birthday to get the tattoo, within 2 months as a self-present I guess...

I was talking to my cousin and he told me I should get it professionally done even if its expensive just in case. What do you guys think? He was also telling me how Koi's are overrated now and are lame... but it fits my style IMO.

Dude that idea would look nice on the lower calf and Ofcourse you should get it professionaly done, thats on your skin for life. Good tattoos aint cheap and cheap tattoos aint good. Do your research and find a good artist. don't just go to anyone like i did..

Yeah I'll agree with you there.

Not trying to be rude, just stating my opinion.

I honestly think fake temporary tattoos are cool, but the real thing not so much. When you get old, your skin starts to wrinkle, and the fish won't look so good. just my 0.02
