The online/offline high level play debate

I am making this thread just to see how people feel about the the issue. Personally I feel that while you can use online online to learn matchups to an extant, it is not the same as offline. As a personal example I can say for instance I main Zod. Offline, I can literally do anything this character is capable of, trait cancels from strings, trait mixups and what I feel are his most practical bnbs. Online I literally can not even land a full combo. I know I could adjust for lag and make some combos easier, but why train myself to make mistakes and reinforce bad habits? Weigh in with your opinion. Keep it clean and no trash talk! Go!

Online is good for MU knowledge, but nothing is remotely close to sitting next to a human with no lag.

EDIT: This is why I never attempt B3 online after a MB toss with Lobo. I go for things I know will connect.

Try playing with GA online. It's hell.

But yeah, people jump out of shit all the time and get away with murder, etc etc. As Tom Brady said once: "There's no knowledge online".

Online people who don't care about frame data, or knowing that whatever they're doing doesn't actually work anywhere but online deserve no respect. It's even worse when they think they're legit, makes me wanna poke my eyeballs out.

Right on, and I am not trying to take anything away from online players, I just feel like there is a drastic difference.

Same thing when I play DS, land a B1U2, YAY! now I got a 50% chance of landing the F3 afterwards, 50% chance of getting the 323 at the desired height, and a 50% chance of getting the F23/12 xx SF come out. And if any of those fail, half-health

Or same thing when I get a MB Sword Spin to hit, dash, whiff the Sword Flip(fuck), half-health.

Hate playing online. I would love to play offline although none of my friends plays Injustice. Even if I do find one it's hard to find someone that's actually decent at the game.

Depends entirely upon the connection quality achieved.
Online can be incredible sometimes, when playing against someone on a wired, high download and upload speed.
Also, making friends on the internet is pretty rad.

When I play other characters other than Ares, I constantly drop combos and it frustrates the hell out of me. Online is a different animal, plain and simple.

I go back and forth on this issue.
Its an oddity to me becauae i can beat a respectable tournament player online or offline and then ill randomly play someone online with a name like "jack14875!a4b" and they destroy me. It leaves me thinking what would happen if this random dude actually travels to a tournament?

It all comes down to connection. But even then offline is the most "honest" way to play and where it counts the most.

And yeah, lag can be a huge factor. Nothing legit can be settled online. People should take it with a grain of salt.

Online can help you with matchup knowledge and can even help prepare you for offline. But like how xInfra Deadx said before, online is a different animal. Online can force bad habits like overcompensating for lag or prevent players from punishing unsafe moves, just to list a few examples. At the same time, however, I heard that Viking placed top 8 at WB on online experience alone?

My offline DS is tight as fuck. Online? Good luck landing 323 F23. My Hawkgirl is about the same, but the input lag fucks my combos up. Input lag is the true culprit, let's not hate on online

Online is fine. other than a few dropped frames here or there its done wonders for me. I have no offline scene and rely on online play to level up and be awesome. You just have to make sure you practice dat offline timing before an event and study the differences in it.

I understand where the people with offline scenes are coming from because doing weeklies or casuals offline all the time and then playing online back and forth all the time is incredibly frustrating. After an offline event it takes me a day or two to convert back to my scrubby ways

Online sucks because one dropped combo can = 50% or more of your health. Characters have resets, 50/50 setups off of hard knockdowns and you can guess wrong after being punished and lose even more health, basically a situation that should have never happened if it were offline. Dropped combo also means you might lose your own knockdown setup/reset which can totally change the outcome of the match. Your lifebar doesn't reset after the 1st round so every piece of damage counts. Combos in this game are also stricter compared to MK9, and on top of weird hitboxes and inconsistencies makes it harder to land certain strings. A lot of moves in this game also give + frames on block, but in lag those few + frames are more like neutral and can be poked out/backdashed. It's much harder to react to certain moves that have like 21 frames startup, and throws are almost untechable. Then there's stage lag. Stages are really important in this game but if you want to avoid laggy stages then you're stuck with Wayne Manor (which i think favors power characters).

TLDR: Online is hella lame.

Aris and Rip actually discussed this on Avoidingthepuddle. Their take is that it's a good tool to learn matchups, or get a general feel for the game, as well as prevent rust, but shouldn't be used as a measuring stick for someone's potential skill offline. (which I fully agree with)

The great thing about online is, I can not play this game for months on end, pick it back up and feel like the king of the world. lol.

It's fun for the most part. It gets interesting to see the rage flow through peoples veins when you mop them up. Definitely another animal.

I really don't see the difference since half the time when I go to tournaments the monitors lag.
