Current Gen Consoles and Flash Drive

Do the current gen consoles really lack the ability to read/copy files from a flash drive? Hopefully I'm missing something and this is not the case.

Other than playing Mortal Kombat (which is 90% of my gaming), I use my consoles to store and watch movies. I've got a large number of movies on a hard drive and I transfer them to my PS3/Xbox 360 via flash drive. I play some straight from the flash drive and I also keep a collection of my favorites on my PS3 hard drive. It's really convenient and organized nicely (the video preview icons are great). I assume this also means I can't do stuff like import menu backgrounds and stuff like I have on my PS3.

This seems like a peculiar step back. Why was this choice made? Is there any word of either console enabling this feature in the future? Is there a workaround in the meantime?

I believe it's because of kopyright stuff with movies/videos..

That's part of the reason I decided I would hold off on buying a PS4. Since MKX is koming out on PC, I'm just going to build one of those instead.

Damn, that sucks. No plans to implement it, huh?

I was gonna replace all my movies with kid's stuff and migrate the PS3 to my daughter's room. Then put my shit on the new PS4. Guess that fucks up that little plan. Gotta keep the old console hooked up.

Reminds me of when they started axing backward compatibility.

Don't know about PlayStation but on Xbox you can play things from a flash drive. Just not copy. Also has dlna support for network drives.

I have a PS4 and it's not possible to watch movies via flash drive, but recently Sony added a feature to listen Music via flash drive, so I think in the future they will bring a feature to watch the videos too. But for now you can only watch videos from Youtube and Netflix, and some other services.

Oh, did they finally add DNLA support for PS4? I think it was missing when the console originally shipped. Do you know if it can play from Plex servers?

Yeah you can listen to music on flash drives but can't watch movies. Hopefully they add that feature in the future. Because I as well have movies on my ps3 I was hoping to transfer over. But I got a big slap in the face when I realized I couldn't. I can listen to music now on the PS while playing games however.

Fill me in... does DLNA support just have to do with streaming shit from a computer to your console? Can't you already do that? I remember streaming to my 360 once and I thought it was shitty so I never messed with it again.

Is it just more convenient or what?

Right. I had a "seriously?" moment when I read about this.

I did just skim over something about some Sony employee talking about DLNA coming to PS4... I noticed he said something about mp3 player coming in early 2015 (apparently that already happened) and movie player coming by Holiday season.

Hope that's accurate.

Then how we will transfer savefiles from gamefas and other sites to the consoles? This is definitely a step back, and it will hurt mein real life :(.
