There's some rocky outcroppings, and what looks like some kind of pulley system behind Lao. At first, I thought it may be a daytime version of the Kove, but not so sure now

The magazine also says it reveals a surprise fighter, but seems like they are just talking about Kung Lao.

As any other character Kung Lao has an array of standard special moves (Spin and Dive Kick) moves that slightly change in each variations (Hat throw) and special moves that are variation specific.

Tempest (Bladed Hat)
Its a ofense variation to stay on top of the opponent. Kung Lao can throw his hat up or down, and has a special move where the hat circles Kung Lao's body. It can protect him from projectiles among other things as long as it makes contact with him from the front during the impact time. As much as it looks like a defense style, the move serves its purpose to scramble the opponent's with mixups and corner pressure.

Buzzsaw ( The white light makes impossible to read, i think it describes the new look of the hat)
(The first paragraph is an assumpton since the white light makes impossible to read but it continues visible in the other side)
((This variation)) its recommended to those who like to control Space in the field. Every strike are weapons to keep the opponent away, the Hat can be throw upwards and kept there controlling the air field, if you want it to come down before the time you have to spend a bar of meter for it.

Hat Throw (Horizontal hat) can be thrown so slow that Kung Lao can walk in front of the Hat and crossup the opponent to fill the other side of the screen. (F0xy setups in bound)

Hat-Trick (while lotus symbol glows)

Varation for nasty players, that can be intelligent and think really fast in combat, the main goal is that the hat can be thrown in different places and it stays there until gets called back at any moment, ideal for luring opponent into a close range battle and then call the hat to hit him in the back.

The tempest variation sounds interesting, apparently he has a hat circling around him and it can block projectiles if it happens to be in front of him. Sounds like it's inspired by Adam orbs with a different twist.

Hat trick confirmed troll variation according to them.

The crossup in MK its not about which side to block, in this case KL will be on one side, and the hat will be in the other, the thread of incoming attack that comes from both directions, if you're an experienced player in MK with this system you can open peoples defenses up in multiple ways. Such as empty jump into throw~slow hat hits and you get a juggle, or a different Setup etc etc.
