Laptop turning off without charger

Just started happening after I was done watching the evo streams, I unplugged the charger and 5 minutes later my laptop shut down. This keeps happening, the battery only slightly decreases but it without fail shuts down in a bit.

Then I can't turn it on without plugging it in.

Yea how old is it and what power settings do you use? I had mine on high performance and it fried the battery in like a year. Also overcharging isn't good for the battery and you should let the battery die and then charge the laptop completely BEFORE turning it on again every once in awhile. Your battery might be past that point though.

1 year old, I always use it on high performance due to gaming, when I don't have the charger with me it stays on low performance.

What I've been doing for the past week or 2 is just using it as a portable desktop and just putting it to sleep instead of turning it off.

When you put it in sleep mode do you leave it plugged in? I'm going to guess you have a power setting that limits the charge your battery holds to prevent overcharging like mine does. My laptop is a gaming laptop with a charge setting that keeps it at 50% when I leave it plugged in.

I know high performance reduces your battery life so depending on how long you actually leave it on high performance is a factor.

My other laptop's battery is completely compromised and it does exactly what yours does after unplugging it.

Yep. If I don't have it plugged in when in sleep mode it will slowly drain the battery since it needs resources to remain on sleep with everything I had open.

Always on high performance pretty much.

So, I just take the laptop to the store and they'll know what to give me?
Depends on the store I'd imagine. I have to order mine online. Look online, just use your laptop model when you look. Lots of batteries fit in lots of different computers. As long as the battery says it works in your laptop(by model designation, usually a set of characters/numbers. For example: my laptop is the lenovo Z575)

Check your power settings, it could be timed to shut down after no activity (watching a stream may constitute no activity from you on the user end)
