Why is Human Smoke considered better than Ermac?

As a new umk3 player I am wondering why is Human Smoke considered better than Ermac because by what I have seen in tier lists Ermac is considered a tier below Human smoke the only reason I have seen is because of his air throw but is there any other reasons?

He has the fastest walking speed in the game, which is a huge advantage. That plus his air throw are the two main reasons he’s above Ermac. So essentially, he has two advantages over Ermac. All Ermac has that is better is better punish damage and corner damage. But HSmoke’s damage output is already high anyway, so that difference doesn’t change much, and the damage difference isn’t that large anyway.

But other than that, they are pretty similar. Which is why Ermac is typically around 3rd or so on the tier list just below HSmoke.

Ermac has the advantage of not having to enter a cheat code to be picked.

I don’t feel that H. Smoke was meant to be balanced with the rest of the roster.

Iirc shock had ermac 3rd in his tier list back in the early 2010's (I dont remember what year specifically).

Why is that insane? He’s around 3rd or so on pretty much every tier list. What, exactly, is “insane” about it?

My uncle used Ermac in the 1990s Toronto scene. He used Ermac because he does scary damage, Telekinetic Slam was busted & Teleport has a bug that when punished he can become invisible on top of that it’s a great move for a lot reasons.

Ermac is definitely Top 10 & some could argue Top 3 due to his damage but I think Ermac needs to be played perfectly. If I remember correctly, Kano & Nightwolf give him a hard time. What Human Smoke has over Ermac is better air control & a faster walk speed.

It’s been over a decade since I’ve played UMK3, probably when MKAK (which wasn’t great) was first released on 360 was the last time I played the shit out of it so I could be wrong.

I couldn’t tell you honestly & neither could my older brother. I’d have to ask my uncle as he was playing before I was born (Oct. 1995) but chances are he doesn’t remember or just tells me to fuck off or let it go like he always does.

I just remember the lessons he taught me & that he built the foundations of my fundamentals & my style of play which I’ve been building off of for 20 years & the memories of having to stand on a chair so I could play (and once falling), my uncle getting pissed off at my brother for playing this Jurassic Park game (which was awesome) & getting milkshakes before going home to our apartment at the St. James Cathedral & I would tell my Dad about my day.

That invisible teleport bug is pretty rare. It happens when your opponent hits you out of the teleport with a grab type move (like air throw, but there are other moves that can do this).

I don't think Ermac loses to Kano or Nightwolf, but I imagine he would have trouble against Lao. Ermac's main weakness is that he has poor options for anti airing crossups. This is the main reason why Human Smoke is better (he can air throw crossups).

Fair enough. I used to play in various variety stores in Northeast Scarborough at that time.
