What are gaps in strings?

Noob question, but I'm coming across people talking about gaps in strings? Can someone ELI5? Please tell me the significance of gaps and what I need to know to become better at analyzing frame data. Just trying to get better, sorry if it's a dumb question (I'm a noob...).

Thanks

A gap refers to, in the case of Injustice 2, when you can backdash out of part of a string. So let's say I have a 113 string and there is a gap between the 1 and 3 (which is often noted as 11~3). On block, my opponent can input a backdash as a reversal after the 11, and backdash out of the last part of my string.

Sometimes gaps also allow you to jump out of the string, but I'm not sure how many strings have that in Injustice 2.
