Yes. The game is built around a lot of read centric moments. Evades and throws are very binary in that they basically have instant start up and tend to work or not. Do the right one to beat what your opponent is doing, you win. Guess wrong, oops. Try again.
DOA took the idea. Holds beat strikes, throws beat holds, strikes beat throws.
In VF I think it is strike beats throw, throw beats evade, and evade beats strike. If you aren't getting someone to wiff you are probably playing RPS. JuiceBox was saying the game is very centered around this, and that mental fatigue is a big deal in VF because you are constantly making predictive decisions about the other player behavior.
He's only been playing about 8 months and doesn't claim to be good at it, but he is a scientist and seemed to be playing with long time players well before we knew the game was coming out.
