UA Showtime Wins Mortal KombATX's Lone Star Battleground

Lone Star Battleground was the first MK tournament of its kind in Austin, TX. Thank you so much to everyone who traveled from out of town to attend, and to those who contributed to the pot bonus. We had 30 entrants, representing cities all across Texas. The Austin scene is still young so it means a lot to us that you all would come out and support us. Like any good tournament there were hype matches, nail biting comebacks and high levels of sodium.

Top 8 Results
Grand Champion UA Showtime (Cyber Kano, CO Sonya)
2. Khaotic Ominous (Wrestler/PU Jax, War God/Sun God Kotal)
3. KoreyTheDragon (Summoner Quan, GM Sub)
4. Hurtful Badger 87 (Kobu Tanya, HQT Predator)
5. SQ1 Brytor (Tremor all variants, Inferno Scorpion)
5. Perm (Shaolin Kung Jin, Full Auto Jacqui)
7. SQ1 ATP (War God Kotal)
7. Sica (Artist formerly known as Toki; Relentless Jason, War God Kotal)

Road to Finals
There weren’t too many surprises. San Antonio and Austin were relatively free. Houston came strong. The Dallas crew, having showed up in great numbers, suffered a lot of team kills. And Kobu Tanya players placed high. It was exciting to see Hurtful Badger 87 at the event, as he has been gaining notoriety for holding his own against high level players online. It was also a small surprise to see two Austin players in top 8. But not the players we expected, Vibu and Henzzar. They were eliminated quickly. It was ATP and Brytor who made top 8 on Losers and Winners side respectively. The biggest surprises were:

Brytor making top 8 on winners side, showing that his months and months of character loyalty to Tremor paid huge dividends.

Losers Semis when a close set between Hurtful Badger 87 and Khaotic Ominous was stalled because the batteries in Hurtful Badger’s controller died. Ominous used the “RyuuJin tech” to claim the round but Hurtful Badger would not be deterred and tied it 2-2. Game 5 was down to the wire but Ominous made the right read when it mattered most and advanced himself to another top 3.

No stray controllers stalled any matches. A miracle honestly, The Elder Gods blessed us.

Winners Finals - UA Showtime vs KoreyTheDragon
This was a runback from AB6 where Korey took the set 2-0. This time UA Showtime was ready. His Sonya rushdown was too strong for Korey’s Summoner Quan Chi. Even Korey’s switch to GM Sub couldn’t save him though. Showtime was in control the whole time and finally overcame his tournament demon, KoreyTheDragon.

Losers Finals - Khaotic Ominous vs KoreyTheDragon
Ominous took the set to a quick 2-0 with his very unique Pumped Up Jax. He used all the tools at his disposal to challenge Korey’s ice clone, making it hard for Korey to get anything started. It seemed as though Showtime was still in Korey’s head. But he shook it off and made some great reads to bring the set back 2-2. In game 5 Ominous went in with no fear and challenged everything Korey threw at him to take the set.

Grand Finals - Khaotic Ominous vs UA Showtime
First match Showtime sent a statement by picking Cyber Kano against Ominous’ War God (a MU easily in KK’s favor). After Kano got mopped Showtime switched to Sonya and got a near flawless the first round. Ominous made the adjustments he needed to make and the two players traded games. With two strong 50/50 characters and players of their caliber it could have gone any direction. But the veteran UA Showtime would not be out played. He took the set 3-2 and claimed that “Ominous is still my son.”

Special thanks to:
Perm because without him the idea to do this would have never occurred.

SQ1 ATP for bringing an Injustice set up.

Mage’s Sanctum and their new owner for keeping this thing alive. For a few days leading up to the even it looked like we might not be able to do it, or would have to settle for a lower quality venue. Huge shout out to Mage’s new owner for keeping the place alive and for honoring our arrangement with the previous management. You can review them here: https://www.facebook.com/MagesSanctum/reviews/

This was dope - sad that I missed it. I think the TX guys need to get up more often though - Texas Showdown is right around the corner and would be cool to see Texas well prepared to defend its home turf.
