Top 5 things you dislike about MK11

5. Variations.
I'd rather have single, well designed, well thought out characters instead of a bunch of useless junk. People pick the best thing anyway. It's dumb and lazy design.

4. Krushing and Fatal blows
If you deal 30% for free on single button press and the KB condition was that your opponent wasn't blocking, check your privy lodge.

3. Throws
Not only do they have stupid range but they also catch crouching moves.
The dumbest idea ever. You try to play by fighting game fundamentals and get punished for it.

2. Defense is disadvantageous
In most other fighting games you have to put in work to attack. In this game, you are free to yolo mash and press on people for days with some characters while others struggle to land a hit, whiff inside their own hitboxes (looking at you, staff normals) and a character like Jacqui can just win because who cares about pressing at - frames right?
It doesn't matter if you block correctly, this game punishes you for blocking, period.
Flawless blocking is also a stupid mechanic, a needless problem that makes online play even worse when certain things can only be dealt with via FB.

1. Walking back all match is a viable option.
Raise your hand if you're a scorpion player who does this.
Good, now go fuck yourself. :D

Other than number 4, a lot of these sound like staples of Mortal Kombat for the last 2 and 3 decades, especially against the arcade AI in the classic games. They may not exactly be excusable after 29 years, but to argue they're issues with MK11 specifically seems ridiculous, they're all elements of MK I've just come to expect. In reference to yours:

5. The variations have been there since MKDA nearly 20 years ago and whilst I'd prefer an MK 1-4 approach of just an all-round character, they're here to stay.

3. The AI would punish you with throws no matter what you did in MKs 1-3, which whilst I'm not excusing, they're the games that I fell in love with MK for, so to argue that throws are too powerful now would imply that they never did my head-in back in 1994.

2. I remember when I was around 11, I thought I was the master of MK1 on my SNES. I played it every day and even though it was a home port, even setting it to 'very easy' still meant bugger-all after the first couple of opponents (MK2 was even worse). However for a laugh once, we got my neighbour's little sister who was around 7 at the time to play MK1, setting it to 'very hard' when she wasn't looking and then we sat back and prepared to laugh. She got all the way to the Endurance rounds with just button mashing and not having a clue what she was doing. Getting caught in a two player battle where the novice opponent kicked your ass with a spam of high-punch was just part of MK as I grew to know it.

1. Sounds like MKs 1 and 2 to me.

Honestly I love MK11 more than any other in the series... because for me it truly feels like the MK of my youth but updated for today.

But there are a few things I don't like, but they're shallow aesthetic things, so I'll join in but I'm afraid it won't be in discussing the engine as you have, because honestly I love how it plays.

1. Most of the skin/clothing colour choices are revolting, the majority of my unlocking grind felt like I was just struggling to unlock the "good" options instead of being lumbered with whatever crap I had so far received. Who had been waiting for an orange Sub Zero or a green Frost? Do many people actually like revenant Liu, Lao, Kitana and Jade? So many skins even have completely bizarre and arbitrary colour changes to accessories when combined that make no sense whatsoever. Want Sub Zero in dark blue leather? Surprise, both your mask and axe are now luminous yellow!!! WTF? Hey that Sheeva skin looks beautiful, now where's that perfect Saxon helmet to compliment it... ah there it is.... IN BRIGHT PINK! Wait what?

2. Guest voice actors who aren't voice actors. Why would you ever employ Rhonda Rousey and Dimitri Vegas to be voice actors in a game? Give us professional actors, not pop-culture celebrities who have never acted a day in their lives.

3. You have the most gorgeous MK engine ever, with customisable gear and skins for every character... why not go all-out and give us legacy skins and movie/TV gear/skins for ever character? Give me Conquest Shao Kahn, MK95 Scorpion, Kano's knife from MK95, Kitana's shit fans from MK Annihilation, Legacy's Scorpion, the smart as fuck tang shirts from MK9 for Sub Zero and Noob, Mileena and Jade's costumes from Annihilation, Kitana from Defenders of the Realm, and above all.... costumes from MK21!!! Why is Linden Ashby wearing a horrid worn-out thick denim shirt when he had a smooth silken shirt in the movie? Hairstyles for all the women should be a default gear option, and why are two of Jacqui's gear choices each of her arms? And god don't even get me started on Cassie's wardrobe options. The MK media world is their oyster in terms of what they could bring into this game, but feels like they barely scratched the surface. Fans would gladly have done this for you for free if they could.

4. The music. My god. The music. It's so utterly utterly lifeless. You trailer launch the game with a new remix of Techno Syndrome making it feel like a celebration extravaganza, yet 75% of the whole game is entirely flooded with that goddamn awful menu music. I literally have the music muted these days because I can't bear it anymore. Why can't we have unique menu music, unique character select music, unique tower select music, ugh instead it's one single 10-hour long piece of boring lifeless nonsense that covers almost the whole game. THIS is a character select music:
The fact that the legacy stages like Dead Pool and Soul Chamber didn't even get classic remixes like classic stages did in MKs 4 and 9 did is a tragedy. And as for the new stages? Cannot recall a single theme from any of them. Over orchestrated with barely a memorable theme among them.

5. Guests. I hate them. Absolutely hate them, don't want them, don't use them, can't stand them, MK doesn't need them, it stands on its own two feet as a powerhouse original IP with unique world-famous characters that have grown to be their own proud juggernaut of pop culture without any other franchise required to prop them up. I don't need a clown from Batman and who's-who of 80s action movie characters in my Mortal Kombat. But I guess, just like I critiqued your disappointment in variations which have now been with the franchise since 2002, that guests are here to stay just as they have been since MK Vs DC in 2008. Very, very, sadly. :coffee:

In no particular order:

- The Variation system, and how it's implemented in this game (I had no issue with Mortal Kombat XL.

- The Get Up System.

- The lack of combo-potential and self expression with one's character.

- The inconsistent nature with how Krushing Blows are available to characters (I don't mind the concept itself).

- The convoluted skin and gear system.

5 the handling of variations. Every character seems to have every kind of move, even those who aren't make for them. Before kustoms the competitive variations looked scarce and lifeless, but kustoms really broke some characters who were actually already strong or lessened some character identity, since they can be customized for any playstyle and some are better than those style's specialists.
4 flawless block and the forced reliance on it for not being abused by some of the aforementioned characters.
3 the safe nonsense. Some characters have some really great moves who are a bit too safe.
2 The grind for winposes and intros. I wish there was an alternative unlock, like one every 100 wins online, for those who can't be bothered with towers.
1 enemies in towers don't get hit by arena effect. It really destroyed the little will I had to grind. In ij2 i used offline for combo consistency training, but here is a chore to do so.

5. Towers. With augments it's pretty much a nonfactor now. But that launch was unforgivable. Whoever thought of that needs to not be consulted on future game designs. Even launch SFV survival wasn't that infuriating for me

4. Story elements and retcons. It's dumb, and nrs storytelling has gotten so much worse. "Shao killed Jerrod. Jk it was D'vorah. Jk it was Sindel, and she was killed by Quan Chi." So what was the point of the ward to protect against invasion? "Lol fuck u. And titans are above the One Being." And story chapters need to go. Thats one thing I'll give SF story over MK. Whoever needed to win, you took control of them. And it makes the villains complete jobbers.

3. Costume selections are just weak. We need more variety. Some revealing (whole cast), some out there like maybe a beach skin for Scorpion rocking some flip flops. Idk it's just dull.

2. Krushing blows. I'd be cool with them if they just added options to extend combos, like popup, crumple, stun. And if they weren't such ludicrous requirement distributions.

1. Variations. They need to leave. I dont think you can compare styles to variations. The core of characters are completely butchered where in 3d, you can switch on the fly. That was the whole of your character. Now you have to decide if you want to give Raiden a Teleport or not. They just need to design a character with what they have in mind for them. We don't need characters good up close having better projectiles than characters who only have that going for them. Screw variations. I will echo this forever

1. Projectile heavy characters. Cetrion + others are boring to play, and boring to play against because of the reliance of projectiles and 1 or 2 strings. Seeing her in every top 8, doing the same 4 moves gets tiring. Same thing that bugged me in Injustice 2 even though overall I really enjoyed that game.

2. The Krypt. I actually don't mind grinding in the towers. When I first got the game it helped me get better at it. It's fun when you have 15 minutes and don't feel like competing. Getting skins was fun. However, I don't get the appeal of the Krypt.

Maybe I'm just "that guy" but it's equally useful to developers to hear what you like about the game. Write up your pros and cons. For those who don't remember; there's no way to please everyone. At every developer I've worked at there have been heated discussions about different mechanics. Remember that while they may be united outwards, there are plenty of people within the company that disagree on how certain mechanics work or whether they should be in the game at all.

I'll defend MK11 in every other way as it is the best MK game (in my opinion; as should always be assumed). Krushing blows are great (at least 90% of them). Might suck for people who has a short fuse? You know, the rage quitters? The toxic ones that will send you messages saying you won only because you have a cheap Krushing blow or X mechanic? You learn pretty quick what moves trigger them and it becomes part of the meta. Since most professional players say there are no unviable characters in this game, that also includes all mechanics by default. You can argue that some aren't fun, but if you can be competitive in this game with a such a large roster and so many unique mechanics, that means they did a pretty damn good job.

With Kustoms, I think they excelled when it came to giving players creative ways of fighting and I hope they expand on this even more. I will say that some moves don't feel right in number of slots they take up but I'll refer back to the sentiment no character, even now with Kustoms, is unviable.

I'd love to hear a list of current era fighting games that first critic in here referenced are so much better in. This game is a second to me personally after SF3. Maybe third as I do love Capcom vs SNK. Hard to compare. MK11 is easily the game I enjoy the most watching when it comes to tournaments.

And as an artist myself, I have to say they really made one incredibly visually stunning game. I really hope the rumors are true that they are working on a Marvel game.

If I'm being picky:

4. Some kind of reduction of the "why not" aspect of FB. Mostly I'd just like to see them regen between rounds. Maybe they wanted general population to get to go ham with them in the beginning. Ok, whatever, but it's way later in the lifecycle. Greatly improving ease of punishment would be nice, but I really don't care a whole lot about that.

3. Break away inputs that don't, like, conflict with blocking attempts.

2. General NRS plea to stop going too crazy with cinematics that go on forever that have to be seen every match. I get it, stuff is cool. I appreciate all that stuff on the creative level. I'm sure it's super fun for general population week 1 and sells units. But when you toss 1000+ hours a game, a short/alt cinematics option people could use would be nice. Load times add up, cinematics add up. This is time you spend in life doing nothing while trying to play a game. I do want devs to respect the potential time waste their games have. I'm really glad to see load times are front and center now with the new console gen. That's good for everyone.

1 (by far). Is pretty much the endless parade of "players" that just can't stop dumping on the game for 5 min because it's not just like some other game they could be playing but apparently refuse to. Because making games is easy but the people making them are just so epic incompetent it's outrageous. Because apparently they are gods and it's the game mechanics' fault they don't have all the KL skins they wanted. Because apparently if they don't like a game, then nobody should and somebody gotta deal with those shills.

We are done in one complaint thread, so lets make another to have the same tired conversation, for the same people to say the same things. It doesn't make me hate the game. It makes me not respect the people around the entire scene and just want to go play solo genre games so I don't have to listen to people that I guess think they earn cool points for being toxic fountains all day every day.

Kronika is the lowest tier Final Boss in recent History, She has to be up there with Blaze, MK4 Shinnok and Dark Kahn
Aside from trying to fix her base design with different outfits, Cetrion is unlikable in almost all fields
Too many Guests. Spawn, Ash Williams and MAYBE Robocop are fine but Terminator, Rambo and Joker suck.
Cheeky Jade Players throwing d2 out like a lifeline.
Jacqui Briggs

I love this game but there are things that I don't like.

5. Not being able to change costumes easily in the select screen. I know they gave us slots for variations but I also want a way to select all my gear at the select screen without having to change abilities.

4. I wish I got more things for my character the more I play him/her. If I'm playing single player or multiplayer it shouldn't matter. I would like for gear to drop for the character I use.

3. Breakaway punishes. I do find ways around people breaking a combo. But I am firm believer in them not being able to punish you after they break your combo. Also I think you should only get one per round.

2. I don't like the way the lobbies work for king of the hill. I should be able to open a king of the hill and wait for players to show if no one is online.

1. Fatal blows regenerating. This is by far the worst thing in the game IMO. This has been talked about since the beta and it needs to be changed. It's too powerful and can kill instantly while having armor. I have stolen so many rounds bc of it and it's not hard to do.

Unlike some I definitely have faith this game will get support. I have a feeling they will add more content and gameplay down the road.

John Grizzly

The axe that clears the forest
1 - The complete lack of fun/creative combos

2 - Breakaway

3 - Every single thing about Fatal Blows

4 - The poor balance of Krushing Blows across the roster

5 - The fact that you're forced to play towers for unlockables when everything should just unlock by playing any mode you please

  1. Fatal blows - by far the worst mechanic for me personally since I started playing fighting games 15 years ago.
  2. Breakaways
  3. Wakeup system
  4. Krushing blow inconsistencies
  5. No wifi-filter the constant scramble of trading downpokes in the pro komp

Ermac ftw
Fatal Blows : I dont mind the mechanic itself, but how it is implemented currently, it should be death on block/whiff and be punishable by everyone everytime, and it should go away for good wether you hit or miss.

Wake up system: Currently if you knock someone down, you have to guess on multiple things the opponent can do; u2, u3, back roll, forward roll, jump, buttons, grab. Usually if you bait some of them, you get hit by the others.

Variations: The system itself isn’t bad, but there are Too many specials locked and some conflicts that doesn’t make sense at all (johnny’s camera and nutpunch for example).

Wifi and not being able to decline high ping opponents under 150ms

Meter system: Regen meter just doesn’t work with the way this game is built

I've finally been enjoying the game again. I think some of you all just like hating on something, otherwise why would you spend so much time on a fan site dedicated to the subject you hate?

With that said, though, I certainly do still have criticisms of things that I hope don't make it into future NRS games. In no particular order:
  • Variations. Please, for the love of god, do your job as a game designer and design me a complete character. Don't make me do your job for you! Balancing a normal fighter is difficult enough; I don't think any studio in the world has the time and resources to adequately balance the thousands of possible matchups that can exist in this game, even if only 1% of those variations are viable.
  • Ugly gear. Cassie and Jacqui could be the most fun and viable characters in any fighting game ever, yet I will never touch them because of how unappealing their customization options are. You're going to put in Terminator and not give him his Terminator 2 sunglasses? Really??? Those are the reason he even has a Sunglasses customization category! He has like 50 pairs of glasses and they all look terrible. Characters have masks that are apparently just glued to their faces. Come on...
  • Fatal Blows. I don't mind a good comeback mechanic, but the fact that they regenerate after being wasted is just bad. Like, it actively hurts the game. Combined with how safe and unreactable many of them are, there is no excuse why they should come back if you waste them. When Kabal, Cetrion, Frost, EB, Noob, and others have access to FB, it just totally shuts down the match. Especially online, you can't press a button. The fact that that shit comes back if they waste it does legit make me want to drop the entire game lol.
  • The Soundtrack. What soundtrack? Where's my Raiden Superman scream? I really hope NRS hires an entirely new sound department for their next game. If I can still remember the music and sound effects from a 28-year-old game (MK2) but can't recall a single track from the game I was just playing, that's not good.
  • The grind. I refuse to participate in it. When the game released I touched towers one time, and never again. As others have said, if there are going to be rewards, then I should receive them for playing the game, not by grinding out single-player content. I despise the entire reward system in this game. Luckily, as a PC player, I have the means to unlock whatever customization options I want without participating in that terrible aspect of the game. And, as a RoboCop main, the default skin suits me just fine if I ever play on console.
But, again, I'm still enjoying the game despite those criticisms.

I don't mind the variation system, but at this point I'd love for the next game to not have variations, just so that it's one less thing to worry about.

1. Fatal Blow. Comeback mechanics in fighting games need to go. Why are you getting rewarded for getting your ass kicked? If it didn't have armor, I wouldn't mind it as much.

2. Wake up options like jumping, buttons etc work better than actual wake up options designed for it.

3. Mid cmnd grabs. I don't know, I just hate them. The idea you have to jump to avoid a grab is idiotic to me. And I know they are almost in every fighting game. That's why I don't play anything else than MK. :)

4. PC not being treated the same as consoles.

5. I wish the ranked mode was better. Kinda like Tekken does it and for every character separately and no resets. I've never had a chance to even try getting higher than Demi God because of resets. I also wish you could unlock everything in every mode.

The dumbest idea ever. You try to play by fighting game fundamentals and get punished for it.
The vast majority of fighting games allow throws to hit crouching moves

And the exceptions I can think of (Dead or Alive, Dragonball FighterZ) don't really give special exception to the fact you're "crouching" in those cases

DixieFlatline78

Everyone Has A Path
  1. Ranked. It's toxic and the overall online experience is terrible.
  2. Fatal Blows. I don't need to say much more than that.
  3. Variations. They were cool in MKX but plugging special moves into incomplete characters sucks. You'd hope it would make all the characters much more freeform and creative but most players just use the same one or two builds
  4. Frame Data. It's led to characters generally feeling samey. There are two kinds of characters in this game: Characters with 9-11 frame mids and characters without.
  5. Ultimate DLC. Two are boring, all three are underpowered.

Pizza

Thrill Kill
  1. The Variation System
  2. Too grindy/The Kasino fits here too
  3. Fatal blows
  4. While I love more costumes, on the other hand: Too much palette swaps and trash gear
  5. Stage interactive objects, switch button, meter system. These are kinda small details tho.

There’s more than 5, but let me try to keep it short and put some together:

1. Customisation - moves, skins and the whole grind to get them. Most characters feel very shallow and limited. The skin colour combinations, lack of truly customizable options, the odd choices for the 3 gear options. The grind will get into in a separate point.

2. Classics missing - with all the fan service there are some classic moves, skins among others things, which I will get into later. No MK3 skin that was shown, not the right eyes for Scorpion for his classic skin, Foster’s “classic” skin, very few actual classic skins. Then moves: with customizable moves, would it have hurt to bring back some classic moves like Sub Zero ice puddle, ice clone, Baraka’s blade spin among others?

3. Music / sound - from the awful whiny noise after fatalities, the forgettable themes during fights aside from 2-3, over the top noises for blood and hits or the weird aluminum sound when Jade hits you as if aluminum on flesh / bone sounds like metal banging together, the menu theme, and on top of that: lack of throwback music / theme.

4. The grind - Krypt, the way towers work, the randomness of it all, no true reward for a lot of hard work as in not worth it, Kombat League. The store as well. They really think I will waste my time to get a skin, intro or certain gear option? F that. There’s plenty of stuff I don’t have that I would’ve loved to have, but there’s just not enough fun towers and ways to unlock things.

5. Fatal Blows, Fatalities & Fight mechanics - Fatal Blows while gorgeous after a while just got annoying as it’s an easy way for the opponent to win when down. It takes too long and takes me out of the flow of the game. Wish there was a way to turn them off.

Fatalities also look gorgeous, but way overdone. I prefer simple and effective rather than a meaningless kick or whatever followed by killing someone after they’re already dead. It doesn’t help that the final slow mo is not my forte and it’s followed up by that annoying whiny music.

Fight mechanics - too many flaws in it as far as having unstoppable moves / moves that can be spammed as well as giving the offense way too much leeway in ability to keep pressuring while defense gets little reward.

Flawless block is way too rare and stepping back is too slow to dodge an attack at times. Also not a fan of the combo system in terms of timing and how it’s just too often a string of buttons that sets off a programmed animation.

Final word:
Through most of this there’s a deal of potential, but in the end almost but not quite feeling. No Tagawa announcer, no stage fatalities for certain obvious stages, even with the graphics and colour certain stages are brown, red / green and black that feel the same, the choice for revenant looks in the select screen. There seems to be the lack of commitment by NRS to truly make this game the one it could be.
