From Polygon:
League of Legends developer Riot Games is working on an unannounced fighting game, according to Evo fighting game tournament co-founder Tom Cannon, who also works at Riot. Cannon confirmed the development during an interview at Evo, as spotted by esports reporter Rod "Slasher" Breslau
"Back in 2016, when we joined forces with Riot, I said that we were going to go in the hole for a while,” Cannon said, “and I want to be able to let people in on maybe the worst kept secret in the universe, which is I can confirm that we are working on a fighting game for Riot."
Riot Games acquired Cannon's former studio, Radiant Entertainment, which he founded with his brother Tony Cannon, in 2016. Radiant was working on a PC fighting game at the time called Rising Thunder, which featured giant robots battling in one-on-one fights, and pursued a simplified approach to the complicated move inputs seen in other fighting games.
While Riot’s work on a fighting game has been heavily rumored, the developer has not officially announced a new project or given any indication about the former Radiant Entertainment team’s work at the studio.
The Evo fighting game championship is happening this weekend, Aug. 2-4, in Las Vegas.

Personally, I think this is a pretty big deal. Regardless of how you feel about Riot Games, their audience is huge and this game -- depending on how good it ends up being -- could bring a lot more fans to the Fighting Game genre.

Sounds awesome, does anyone know what type of fighter it is? What kind of style?

Can't wait to pay for every character and pay for every special attack and have characters completely changed when they get bored with them.
What game makes you think that? I played League of legends and all the characters where free and could be bought with in game currency that is easily earned. It was skins that cost money only cosmetics but nothing that gave you an edge competitively.

is it kinda hard to break into the FG scene as a developer? All these franchises have been around for decades and are established. DBFZ is the only “new” one I can think of but that’s dragon ball so it doesn’t count lol. Whatever happened to that new FG with the classic universal monsters, did that turn out any good?

Yeah, I could be wrong but I don't think that Riot has pay-to-win games really. Seems like gameplay content can be earned for free, and the game itself is free, so that's probably a better model than paying $60 for a fighting game then having to buy a $20-40 season pass every year.

There isn't any details on what the game is going to be like, only that it's happening. But it's being made by former devs of Radiant Entertainment, which made Rising Thunder. That game never really got out of Alpha if I remember correctly, and that's because Riot acquired the studio.

I'm pretty sure Rising Thunder was kinda like Street Fighter, but with simplified controls and customizable loadouts (think Custom Variations from MK11).

Yes, fighting games are known to be a very hard genre to tackle. For a fighting game to get any sort of attention, it usually has to have a big nostalgia factor or be based off of something that is still very popular currently. And they are just really hard to make, really.

But since Riot Games is huge because of League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics, this may not be a problem for them. Especially if they make the game free like their other games. Lot of players will check it out because of that, plus they have mega cash and can afford to pay streamers to play the game and help it take off. I think Riot is their own publisher, so they don't have to worry about any WB-like companies breathing down their neck forcing them to hit certain demands. They can kinda just do whatever they want as long as it's profitable for them.

The main problem they will face is whether or not the game is actually good. It has to have solid gameplay and visual design, but since it seems that the game is being made by Ex fighting game devs, maybe that won't be a problem either.

EDIT: Also, if they make the game a League of Legends spin-off, that will help it take off even more.

FighterZ is made by Arc System Works as well. They’ve been around.

Hopefully it plays like Rising Thunder. Riot acquired the studio a few years back. That game was simple and fun.

Uf riot bought Rising Thunder I guess that is totally possible... but I hope they rebrand it. The game was ok, but the robots and all that sucked. Zero character imo. Fighting games need tons of personality in the roster. Riot is a bazillion dollar company though, so they should put out some aaa effort at least. MIght not be good but should be polished and look pretty.. so good for a try.

I doubt it's just Rising Thunder. If it was, they probably would have started pushing out updates for that game and call it a day.

It seems the project they are working on is using completely new assets and whatnot, so it's most likely a new IP or a spin-off of League of Legends.

yeah my bet would be on repurposed LoL characters.. but what I mean was that if they bought Rising Thunder it could be made by the same devs and have the same design philosophy.

I’m a Mega Man fan, so I dig the robots.

No one rlly brings this up, but I want a star wars fighting game cuz there's so much u can work with that
star wars is dead to me.. I can not think of a franchise that is so miss managed and unwatchable as that, which once was the best franchise on the planet.

There's that old one on the playstation. Something of Teras kasi. All I remember about that game is that Chewbacca has some truly hilarious range on his down poke.

Also, I'm all for this. Hopefully it plays well, since I actually like a lot of what I see in LoL, but I just don't care for MOBAs. Or maybe it's just that I don't care for team games since I like to know my wins and losses were because of me entirely.

The Robot Masters, Dr. Wily’s Robot factory, etc. When were androids considered non-robot?
they are robots.. or a type of robot.. that is why megaman is a robot as he is an android.. are you not a native english speaker? As you seem really confused.
