The purpose of this thread is to try and shed some light on a feature that isn't used enough that allows us, the staff, to better serve the community by keeping threads free of toxicity. While there won't always be a staff member present to handle the report(s) immediately, it does make it far easier for us to deal with issues upon logging in since we'll see the notifications for the report(s) immediately.

We can't read every status update or every post in every thread every single day. It's just not possible. This whole idea of us "slacking" and not "doing our job" needs to be put to rest. We rely on the community to help us better serve you and the report function is the fastest, easiest and best way to do that.

So, from now on, instead of engaging in the toxic discussion and putting in your two cents, report it and leave it at that. If you have an issue with the overall tone on the site lately and take part in it yourself, you're just as much of the problem as those who initiate it. Don't be a part of the problem, but instead, be part of the solution.

Keep in mind, however, that just because you disagree with something someone days, doesn't mean you should report it. There are strict guidelines in which something should be reported. Abusing the report system will do you more harm than good, so don't do that.

If you're not sure whether it should be reported, refer to the rules located here. If you're still not sure, don't respond with anything and instead check to see which mods, if any are online by going here and directly messaging one of them.

I'm wanting to make this a better place for everyone and I've heard the community's concerns. This, in my opinion, is the best way to start that off. Once we get the ball rolling, hopefully it'll keep looking up from there.

Let's work together to make it happen.

I tried reporting once. Got an infraction for it. Haven't touched it since.

Hm. I'll have to look into that. But don't let it sway you from using it. It could have been a bad call on the other person's end. Like I said: I'll look into it.

  4. I've always been afraid to use it. Is it like Disqus where once you flag it, you can then provide a reason as to why you're flagging it?

I’ve noticed a lot of people rushing to tag mods every time someone starts a really shitty, but non-rule violating thread.

As if mods exist to delete everything they don’t like.

Yes. You can give a reason why you're reporting it. In detail, in fact.

  7. Thanks. I wasn't sure because I've seen people on here say they accidentally reported something, so it seemed like a one-click thing lol

Think we be cool if people learned some self control and stopped posting in threads they have no interest in to begin with. All it does is derail threads and start drama, which some members seem to love. Also passive aggressive status updates referencing posts or users is some petty grade school shit.

Is toxicity the same thing as violation of the rules? Or is it a more broad and subjective grounds for censure?

I got a message saying I got the infraction and was told I was using it wrong, as I reported one guy but not everyone else in a thread who said something bad. I tried to explain I hadn't read through the entire thread, just saw that one guy saying something I thought was worth reporting. But was then told it was not up for debate, and then the message was locked. It's no longer shown in my messages either.

So yeah... I'll just not use the report button.

Toxicity comes in all forms, but not all of it is a violation. That's why I said if someone is unsure if they should report something, ask a mod.

The link is kind of vague. I have seen and engaged in some friendly shit talk, a jab here or there. What constitutes an insult? I get the whole racist and harassment stuff but what is ban worthy?

Nice post, I agree with the first dude's point @HeavyNorse I've used it a few times(not recently I just try to ignore drama if possible) and I remember mods telling me "don't respond just ignore and report" yet nothing was done to these users, they were still allowed to post, troll my topics which was one key reason why I took a big break from here for a while prior to a few months ago. I can also understand the person who mentioned status updates, I think there should rules regarding those like no mention of other users directly and nobody should blatantly copy another users status in jest just to get a reaction from people or to bait others. Example:

Say someone has a status update of "I can't stand haters, they're annoying"

Then someone else posts "I can't stand people who complain about haters, they're even more annoying"
or those updates from people who I won't mention names but always putting MKC down compared to a different FGC. Not that I'm not for freedom of speech, expression I am but I never understood topics or updates bashing MKC, MK games allowed on here when the point of this site is the polar opposite. There's a difference between constructive, mature criticism and flat out hating/bashing.

But going back on the "parrot/copycat" like posts from earlier, Clearly to me this is a passive aggressive attitude of someone triggered by the first person's status. I've experienced this myself, but have also noticed other people's updates getting baited/trolled/mocked/copied etc. IMO this should not be allowed. I do like the ability to delete trolls that post on your updates and the ignore function which is very helpful. I wish other sites would incorporate this, like CV's for instance is a joke. Their "block" feature is pathetic, you can "ignore/block the user" but yet you still see their posts. Well, anyone who has been or goes on comicvine knows what I mean. lol. Anyway. Great update, that is my personal feedback and view on that. On a side note, I've always felt with threads being derailed, people who troll on purpose those are the users that need to be addressed, not so much those who reply or retaliate. I'm not saying if someone chooses to retaliate they're 100% innocent but to me it's cut and dry most of the time(being someone who's modded elsewhere) if you take care of the user causing trouble, known for it then you won't have others retaliating, responding etc.

That all being said, I do think the site has improved with mods and I feel Eldriken is a good one for what it's worth. I think communication is important, sometimes you want to speak to someone and you feel shunned or ignored. This is not limited to TYM experiences, but sites in general I've noticed over time.

This is just my feedback/opinion on the topic and I'm glad you've brought this to everyone's attention both new, old to the site especially now with MK 11 about to hit. I hope everyone is just more respectful of others views despite pro, casual, general fan or whatever.

    Helpful information to be sure.

But personally, I don't report people. It's just forums man. If you're gonna get that butthurt over someone saying some shit on the internet... it's time to take a break.

A good idea is to make a tag for the mods, similar to discord's system, like @mods. This would bring the attention to all of you guys into a thread that's worth looking and judging. We often don't know who's online and who's the new mod since last time the staff changed.

An insult is usually dictated by the person it's directed at or the way it's worded.

Some of the rules like trolling, talking shit, etc are kind of an at our discretion type thing. It's not always something that is infraction worthy.

There isn't too much that immediately leads to a ban or permaban. It's usually the accrual of infraction points (12 for an automatic ban, I think) that results in a ban. But the posting of pornographic content and the likes is ah immediate permaban.

If there are any particulars outside of what you mentioned already, feel free to DM me. I'll answer any questions you may have. That goes for anyone about anything. Don't ever hesitate to ask me questions.

@Eldriken I have a question,(btw this isn't limited to me or my experiences but just in general something I've noticed on here) isn't someone who always trolls, stalks or follows others, derails someone's topics considered harassment? It should be, to me this is just as bad as any gay or mocking disability slurs. Especially if it's consistent. To me it's almost like saying "well the person is being PC, but they can still insult you, talk shit and it's ok" I'm not talking about friendly or competitive talking shit, I mean like when someone constantly goes after another user because they don't like them personally or they assume they're a noob.

I've been thinking over this and am going to start handling it accordingly. Relentlessly pursuing a person or people in multiple threads should definitely be considered a form of harassment because the other user clearly will not be enjoying themselves.

THIS! When you try to report a mod for derailing the absolute living shit out of a thread and you end up getting an infraction (probably because that same mod got what you reported) you realize you’ve breached gestapo territory.
