MK 11 Pro Kompetition 2020/2021 Top 8(ish) Character Usage

A new Pro Kompetition is upon us and that means its time for me to once again count every time a character is used in one of the (many, many) online tour event top 8s (and occasionally top 4, depending on what is streamed) Also, remember that this is just for fun and I failed math several times in several different ways in college, if something doesn't add up completely or seems off...its because I am big dumb.

Alright, so day one of the 2020/2021 Pro Kompetition is in the books. This first post represents the first weekend of Liga Latina which was four events total. We saw the Top 8 of Brazil #1 and Mexico #1 and the top 4 of Latin America North and South #1. Hot take so far, Jacqui is still really dangerous.

I will see ya'll next weekend for Oceania, Europe East, and Europe West #1!

One of the interesting things to me was that the number of Reborn Scorpions almost directly correlated with the number of Goo-graded Jacqui's. Reborn seemed to be THE Latin American counter pick to Jacqui. Just about everyone in the four top 8s had a Reborn they would switch to when fighting Jacqui.

Aside from more variety due to customs, nothing's really changed. Same old top tier
While true in a general sense for tier placements (yay Jacqui and Cetrion), you cant deny the huge uptick in Scorpion, Jade, Kotal, and Kano usage is a pretty big deal. Also, Johnny has been almost nowhere to be seen.

For day 1, this is rather interesting so far (aside from all the Jacqui/Cetrion usage). I'm curious to see how things shake out with the other nations' days.

One thing with the Jacqui craziness is that nearly half of those came from Latin America North where there were two Jacqui's in top 4 and a mirror grand finals bracket reset.

There were definitely a shit load of Jacqui's but I think that if the full top eight of both Latin America North and South had been streamed, the numbers would have looked a bit less crazily Jacqui heavy.

Wow would you look at that

Noob consistently in every big brain top 10 tier list, yet absolutely nowhere to be found in pro komp.

Also, Jade consistently low S high A on every list, yet here she is being used effectively in pro komp. Funny stuff

So whats the point your trying to make? Shao khan is at the bottom of every tierlist, and he just won a tourney.
This game is alot more about playerskill instead of how good your character is.

Now that I've slept and I'm not formatting this list at 1am here are a few quick thoughts and one note from the second weekend of the Pro Komp.

This weekend we saw a mad lad land Johnny's sunglasses KB as the first hit of a round. We saw a bracket with more Shao Kahn than Jacqui, Cetrion, or Liu combined. We saw our first player DQ'd for an "offensive" variation name. Kung Lao and Scorpion dominating the numbers game was not exactly on my bingo sheet. And another madlad finally picked something other than Goo-Graded Jacqui (just regular ol' Upgraded lol).

Also a note on the characters 'winning' a tournament. Oceania made me feel like I almost need to put a 'Most Valuable Character' tag as well as what character won. Frost may have won Oceania in the literal sense that the player used her to win the final game of Grand Finals, but there is no arguing that his Cetrion got him through the backend of losers and the first five games of grand finals.

Thanks for looking upon and discussing all of my numbers! See y'all next weekend for NA West and NA East!!!!

Amazing work... this is a real asset to the community, thank you!

If you happen to be keeping track of this as well, it would be fascinating to see player numbers alongside match usage numbers. That is, how many unique players used each character?

Just an added layer that would help to distinguish between match usage due to (A) a lot of players picking up a character (popularity) vs. (B) a few players taking that character on a long run (character loyalty). For instance, I'm assuming the 9 matches with Shao Kahn is primarily (exclusively?) by VideoGamezYo, who's a known Shao character loyalist. That's a lot different than if, say, 3 players used Shao for 3 matches each.

Just the observation how the tier lists don't always jive with results. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

I actually have thought about doing this! If I don't end up running into a character limit on the OP, I'll probably toss a player guide in the reserved comment right under it!

Loool was the DQ streamed?

This is great data. The thing that jumps out at me initially is the relatively poor ability diversity among most of the cast. Notable standouts here include are Jacqui and Cetrion where 99% of the players played exactly the same builds. Kustoms are great but it's clear NRS still has a lot of work to do.

This is pretty much what some of us predicted to happen from the start, though — that people would just find the strongest combinations early and use those most of the time.

I still think that having the flexibility is good, though; and I think that people will flesh out more MU-specific tweaks as time goes on.
