I'm gonna guess that Kotal Kahn is an Aztecan Shaman who summons the spirit of Shao Kahn.

Also, "Kotal" is a total play on 'words' from the Aztecan god Quetzal'coatl'.

He ain't Kahn's son, dude is obviously a part of some kind of Azterc lore, so he's from or around Earthrealm.

He could be a successor of no relation, I could believe that.

There could be a "Kahn" for each realm, and this is Earthrealms.

He could be a predecessor of Shao from the distant past.

He could just share the title Kahn and have no relation.

It could be something incredibly stupid that we don't expect.

I'm betting on that last one.
