How to Build and Organize a Local Fighting Game Scene

by Shin-RoTeNdO

This is mainly directed for those without a current scene in their area/region. Those of you who may have a local scene already may use this to help broaden and build upon that community.

During the drafting phase of this blog, I’ve managed to come across the latest Wakeup, Shoryuken podcast, Community Building and You, which coincidently is based on the blog you’re reading right now! I was like, “Damn… a fucking podcast beat me to the punch!” Anyway, this will go into more detail about making this all happen.

Step 1: Establishing the Scene

Probably the first thing you may want to do is to identify the players. You can begin with yourself and a couple of friends that play regularly, then moving on to co-workers, fellow classmates from school, and even your sister’s/brother’s boyfriend/girlfriend. From there you can hit up that arcade of yours that still have Primal Rage, Virtua Fighter 2, and War Gods
with the 3D button that never seems to work and get with those guys who you never speak to, but have always enjoyed beating down in Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

Step 2: Building the Scene

Now that you have established the scene, you want to start building on what you have. Word of mouth has always been a great source for getting the word out. “Hey, did you know that there is a (game of choice here) scene here?” So now the word is out that people no longer have to rely on disappointing online matches with lag or players not on the same skill level and that there are people in the area who plays (and hopefully familiar with SRK) Believe me folks. It’s a small world out there and you’ll be surprised if you’d just ask. [That is how I found people when I was in Okinawa, Japan, ours and SRK’s very own Saotome Kaneda!]

So basically you’re recruiting and you do that by using what’s around you and most importantly… do you care to guess? The internet! In case some of you don’t know (and you should) SRK has a Regional Matchmaking Thread consisting of the following regions: Atlantic North, Atlantic South, Midwest, Northwest, Pacific North, Pacific South, Southwest, Canada, and World. There are other sources of media out there that you can use such as Facebook, Craigslist, Twitter, MySpace, and more.

No access to the World Wide Web? Do you have a local arcade, go to college, and have a few game retail stores nearby? Those are all great places to meet and advertise your scene. On the podcast, Renegade talks about forming clubs in school which is an awesome idea. Hell, try posting flyers up in areas you are allowed to. Mom and Pop game retailers are a great place to put up your flyers as they are not restricted to space purchased by vendors for marketing purposes like GameStop and Game Crazy. As a former Store Manager for GameStop, let me tell you, they will not let you put up ANYTHING that is not in the marketing guidelines or planogram for the company. Sometimes, however, you may get approval from your DM if it can help promote new games, and increase reserves and sales, but don’t press your luck if you’re trying to get something together for something that is played on last gen consoles. Really quick before I go on to the next step… A clever way to pass out your flyers at retail stores is to have them as manual sized inserts. Stick them in every fighting game case in the store and you’ll increase the awareness of the scene in your area whenever a customer purchases that used copy of Soul Calibur 4, Smash Bros. Brawl, or Tekken.

Step 3: Organizing the Scene

How do you organize a scene? After you have a good solid group of players that occasionally meets, you may want to start keeping track of names, phone numbers, gamer tags/handle, and etc. Maybe assign roles or finding someone who is responsible enough (and serious) to organize and keep up with everything. No, I’m not kidding. It really helps and keeps everyone up to date with what is going on and finding out what is going on in your community.

I’ve been following the ‘small’ but existing scene back in my hometown since I left and joined the Marines. Moving back last August, I really wanted to put us on the map and build a scene that everyone can be proud to be a part of. So I created a new thread (which I can edit and organize as I see fit) got names, numbers, etc and listed them on the front page for everyone to have instant access to. I created links to footage of recent tournament matches, pics, tournament results, and even ranking battle schedules! Anything of interest I update in the News section of the post and archive them when we enter a new month. A bit too much you say?

This will help your scene not only grow, but improve as well. Within months of my arrival back home, I’ve managed to increase the size, interest, and importantly the skill level of the scene here. Take it slow first if you’re new to all this, but with time and patient everything will fall together.

Gather together the trades that everyone has to offer too. CSS, HTML, photoshop, video editing, art, stick building/modding, access to venues, jobs at a game retailer, and more. Try to get everyone involved because this is everyone’s scene. Eventually you may want to create a MySpace group, youtube channel, and even a paypal account to fund for traveling expenses to tourneys, food, prizes, equipment, and anything else you can think of.

Here is an example of what we I have done thus far. http://www.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=219478 I already had someone use my thread as a template for their own community and everyone is welcome to do the same. Big shout out to the Arkansas crew!

It is a lot of work, but in the end it is all worth it. With the proper structure and patience, you’ll get your scene to where you want it to be.

Step 4: Managing Progression and Evaluating the Scene

I’ll keep this step concise. The last step is to supervise how well your scene is growing and improving. Toss in some tournaments and when you become comfortable, take it on the road. Test your skills with the next town, schedule team matches or tourneys and work from there. You’ll meet new friends, exchange personal information, form rivalries, trade secrets and overall, learn from the experience.

Remember... there are many useful links here on SRK to get you started. The rest is all up to you, but we're here to help too I'd like to thank my fellow K-Town members here in central Texas, who accepted my ideas, planning, and organizing to put us where we are today. As a treat, every keep your eyes open for my next set of vids. No Marvel this time, but some SFIV from a recent Central Texas Brawl tourney. www.youtube.com/rotendo You can find older MvC2 matches there too and I'm working on compressing the infamous Clockw0rk vs Dark Prince money match, so that youtube can accept it. Thank you all for reading! This article was originally published in blog: How to Build and Organize a Local Fighting Game Scene started by Shin-RoTeNdO

Ok, So right now I am piggybacking the MK causals to the local SSF$/MvC3 scene. I will be running the first MK setup there. Any suggestions for what I should be doing?? I'll be getting the names of everybody, but What else should I be doing. I just want to make sure I do not Blow this opportunity.

what if there just isn't anyone in the area who plays, or at least they don't play seriously? when the game came out and i was at gamestop playing people every time i asked them about tournaments and wanting to play casuals regularly it just all went over their head. its seems like nobody there that night really took this seriously at all. as a result, i bodied every single last one of them. so at that point i think they just didn't want to play me anymore, but i so wanted a group of people that i could teach and have learn the game along with me. i've only got one personal friend that is semi-interested in competing but everything he knows has been passed down from me. hes not the type to watch streams, youtube videos, post on forums, listen to podcasts, and read wikis. i'm the only guy i know who does any of that. i'm also trying to film a documentary on this whole journey to the PDP tournament, but i'm going by myself not only film but compete. i'm probably not going to make it very far simply on just having online competition (and only for a few days at that since i had to break down and buy a 360 copy of the game) and pretty much just constantly win over a bunch of scrubs that i have to fight through lag to beat, or they ragequit when i have them beaten so badly. its not even fun.

i'm looking to just move to austin soon anyway to look for a job in QA, but they also got a pretty cool arcade there that runs tournaments. i guess my only option is to move away to a better place.

Just read this, nice post dude. Speaking of which, myself and Johnbee were talking (since he lives where I live) about getting together on xbox other day in person, perhaps seeing what the deal is with other people in NYC in general for MK9! And the fact that he and I are both competitive helps also :)

i took to bringing a monitor and ps3 to our local gatherings in case the guys want to play MvC or T6 or something...i'll always have MK running and someone is always wanting to play it.

A: to make a local scene all you have to do are two things; 1. make it known that you want to play. 2. play.

if you do these two things, the real players will find you, or lead you to them.

B: i love how first names always come out when shit starts getting real.

Red, go back to MKU please.

MKF, if you wanna get games with me you'll be able to find me at the following places at the following time:

May 14 - Body Shop Tournament in South Jersey (UMK3, MK9)

Somewhere next week - North Jersey casuals (MK9)

May 22 - North Jersey again for casuals (UMK3 and MK9)

Last weekend of May - Body Shop Tournament in South Jersey again.

End of June - ECT3 in North Jersey (UMK3,MK2 and MK9)

End of July - EVO in Vegas (UMK3 casuals and MK9)

End of August - Summer Jam in Philly (UMK3 and MK9)

October - Seasons Beatings in Columbus OH (UMK3 and MK9)

Maybe I should stop here...

I'm also sure that in between those dates I'll do a couple more with some friends here and there, whenever I can.
As for the invitation....I don't even know what to say...That's like the most obnoxious thing I've ever heard from you. Plus that my schedule is very tight right now as you can see.....some of us actually go out and play other people rather than stay home, play online and spend endless time in the forums....

Red, if I had a descent job that pays enough, I wouldn't event think before I buy a ticket to CA.

P.S. I play MK1,MK2, UMK3 and MK9 FYI

P.S.2 - If I get a chance to go NY (LI) I'd rather spend my time with serious players like Phil, Rob, Reo, Aure, SJC, LiJoe, Steve N, Red, Sabin, etc. You think you're some kind of a royalty to tell people to go to your place for games??? Phaha....
A friendly invitation is hardly obnoxious, ok so let me get this straight. You obviously don't mind travelling all over the nation and have the money to do so, so you'll go to vegas but not NYC? I see....

And you play the 2D MK's, I see. Was just curious. I never said I was royalty now THAT comment is not only ignorant but obnoxious, that's ok I'm sure I'd find more serious comp elsewhere anyway. Like I said in the other thread, I happen to live near one of the best Cage players

so...um...let me get this straight...

no job + no school = no free time

for some reason it isn't computing. maybe it broke. must be obama's fault.
yup, it doesnt make any. there is something more to it thats being left out, but i dont know what or why.

of well. At least we know that Philly and Vegas should always be coupled together as examples. :/

Lobo....I've never blamed"online" anything on Obama....I said it's hard to find work because the economy is shit, and who runs the country now? Oh wait...Obama...... what that has to do with "scrubs online" I don't know, you brought that up like out of nowhere. Like I said, you don't seem to be aware of the situation I'm referring to....

I'll just let those people believe whatever they wish, I don't care.

Like I said, I'm going to hang with John who also live in SI and has a great cage so I'll have fun playing offline with him for starters.

People like red need to be quiet though seriously and back off, you want me that bad dude? Come to SI, NYC and I'll gladly beat you offline if I must....and give most a run for their money if not win.

*Thread cleaned* Christ do you fools never get tired of arguing about the same old shit day in day out, in thread after thread?? Well, I get tired of cleaning up after it, so next time Im gonna start spamming infractions like they are Noob Saibot shadows. Ughhhh.

well rob maybe if certain members who have no right to even being posting in here would stop, there would be no need for this type of stuff.
it would be like me going into the online threads and making posts. I DONT play online so why would i post there. If you do not attend tourns or cant even travel 30 mins to play offline you should not post in these type of threads ever, don't you agree?

I started out as A kid who only played at home in training mode and online when It came out. I met a group a people though our local Mom and Pop shop then found people offline to play with. A couple months later the store owner agreed to let us run tournaments at his store called Body Shop Saturdays. South Jersey was born for the first time.

It started as a casual only event 7 months ago to see who would come. But the turnout was so great that we ran a tournament that day. 7 months later, some of the best players from the east coast come out even all the way from NY. We recycled metal an alumminum to make money for a live Stream and Ascus Monitors for extra setups. We can still improve. It can be tough. But If you find the right place, it can definitly happen. Good luck to those interested in creating a scene. Big ups to those already running the local spot.

Sorry for the late thanks. Thats what I am doing now. Right now wherever gamers are I am at. I've been at 4 events in 2 weeks now with my MK setup. So far I have 6-8 guys that I can count on to be at our weekly causals.

i'm someone who thinks that blaming online scrubdom on obama is hilarious.
Why not, he gets blamed for everyone else's fuck-ups anyway lol

Great Work man! I'm now part of Showdown Tournaments as their MK guy. Its a Local organization that started out about 4 months ago. We just got a location for weekly causal that we will be steaming, and still searching for an area to run tournys from constantly. The place we used before was a little high on price, so we are checking out some other options.

Thanks for all the advice you guys gave.

ok so how would i go about setting up a xbl tournament, and having people from the mk community to participate.
