The roster is a lot isn’t it? Yeah, we have lots and lots of fighting games out there. But how many of them are accepted as an official line-up for tournament? Becoming the best in fighting game is unique and not for everyone because it requires more than just playing it. Unless, you just want to play for the fun of it. That is cool to me because everything has a starting point isn’t it? The secret to be the best in fighting games is passion, determination, and perseverance. Don't be scared, but to be the best requires some homework. You just can’t be lazy and be the best. Also, you can’t start counting on luck to win matches. You have to face the reality. Think fast, tap the right buttons, reset your attacks, and be careful with your opponent’s attacks. Also, improve on your fighting game habits like avoiding spamming of some moves, or using few moves. There was a time someone asked me if he could use a single character’s move to win matches. Of course, it is possible for you to win with just one single move, whether the move is having high damage or low damage, that doesn’t matter. What matters is for you to win. That’s all. But the golden question is, would you win a tournament with just one single move? You could also be an entertainer by performing fancy moves and combos. But would that fancy style of play win you the match against an opponent that is representing his community? If yes, please go ahead toimpress the crowd. If no, you have to play like a pro. You would rather avoid fancy, and go for rationality. Rational players usually win, whether they play fancy to impress the crowd or not. What matters is for them to win the match by using tactics, strategies, being watchful of incoming attacks, not dropping combos, and being deceptive in their gameplay. Although, the forces of action and reaction determines the type of moves you should execute. You are supposed to make some random attacks. Bait your opponent’s reaction, and then make the decisive move. If you want to be the best, you have to drop fancy, unless your fans accept your playing style, and they think it is fancy enough for them. You need to know that you don’t have to use all your character’s moves (whether normal moves or special moves) in a match. You have to use only the moves that are relevant to gain you a win depending on the match situation. For example, the moves you may use in the first round may be different from the moves you may use in the second or third round. You could decide to use all the moves your character owns as an art of expanding your fighting vocabulary in a particular fighting game. But what is more important is to look at the match situation before executing any move. Since by then you have gathered some experience, then fight with your sharp instinct, read your opponent attacks, and most importantly, do not allow your opponent to figure out your moves or playing style easily. If not, you will be bodied. And you, including all your fans will swallow the true pain of loss. I am sure you wouldn’t want that to happen to you. It’s okay to execute your moves randomly. Just make sure it’s a test to see how your opponent reacts to it. If he blocks one of your attacks, try another attack. If he counters your attack, watch out re-using that attack. But you could still use that same attack unexpectedly. Learn to execute baiting moves. They help a lot. Throw your opponent if he is blocking too much. Stop blocking too much. Avoid jumping too much. Avoid over confidence. Avoid diffident. Avoid pressure, throw pokes, or counter moves. React, do something. Throw away your anxiety. Build confidence. When you are sure you will hit your opponent, take some risky moves once in a while, but do your safe moves regularly. Learn the rules of your tournament to avoid being disqualified. When you are ahead, don’t panic, until you finally win the match.

Chapter 2:
Choose the fighting game of your choice. Take time and choose it carefully. Although, it could be more than one, but avoid choosing more than one heavy fighting game. Heavy fighting games are games that are difficult to win in a major e-Sport tournament at a time. What makes them difficult are: The high number of participants attending the tournament. The higher the participants, the harder it is to win the tournament. How long the series has been in existence? The longer it is, the heavier it is, since many players are familiar with the game and its characters for a long time. Some even right from childhood, makes it more difficult to win the tournament. Unless, it is a “Reset Fighting Game (RFG)” then, it would be okay to participate in it since everything has been changed. So, all players start learning the game almost at the same time. A (RFG) is the game sequel that all the character’s moves were completely changed. A game like Mortal Kombat 11 is a typical example. It’s like playing a brand new fighting game with familiar characters because everything has been changed. The arena, the moves, and the gameplay, has been changed which makes it completely different from the previously made Mortal Kombat series. Unlike Street Fighter, even though, the arena has been changed, most of the characters moves who were in the previously made series, still remains the same. For example, Sagat’s Tiger Shot (Fireball) in Street Fighter V Arcade Edition (6th August, 2018) still remains the same with his Tiger’s Shot since Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition (18th March, 1992). High density. A high density fighting game has so many characters, and so many moves to learn from each character. This makes it more difficult to master all the incoming attacksfrom various characters in the game. There is an old saying: “Master of all trades, jack of none.” You cannot be the best in Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken, Killer Instinct, Super Mario Smash Brothers, Dead or Alive, King of Fighters, Soul Calibur etc. all at a time. When it comes to the world fighting game tournament like “Evolution”, no player has achieved being a champion in both Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter at the same time (I pray to see a legend achieving that one day). I noticed that most of those whom registered for Mortal Kombat rarely register for Street Fighter. No one has achieved winning both. They only manage to win one and fall lower than top ten in the other game they didn’t win. I have seen some very good and brainy players whom won more than one fighting games in a competition like Evo Fighting Games Tournament. But never in the history of winning at least 2 or more heavy fighting games. Like winning any of these 2: Street Fighter, Super Smash Bros, Mortal Kombat, or Tekken in the same competition at a time. How I wish you could break that record because achieving it is not easy. For now, Evo Fighting Game Tournament is the biggest and the most prestigious fighting game tournament in the world. It is even getting bigger and bigger as they now show it on popular satellite TV’s like Twitch. Unfortunately, some very good fighting game players don’t have the opportunity to be there. Some players do not make it to Evo Fighting Game Tournament even if they are one of the best players in the world. Here are some reasons: They are too scared to leave beyond their community or comfort zone. Once someone advises them to join a local tournament, they fall sick and give alibis that will not see them there. Some are busy. They have Schools to attend to; home works todo, and responsibilities, which cannot give them the opportunity to get there. Distraction is another reason. They need to concentrate on their ends meet and other forms of distractions from family, friends, environment, insecurity, and so on. Natural unluckiness: For example, some people might not be able to pass their VISA and passport interview, or not able to get a sponsor. Even if they have no sponsor, they can’t afford to travel there. Let’s give a high level of respect and thanks to some top Street Fighter V players for sponsoring other players who think they are good enough to prove themselves at EVO Fighting Game Tournament but can’t afford to travel there. The veracity is that if a player is very good in a particular fighting game, and is not able to attend any of the major tournaments out there, he cannot be considered a professional. So, you have to prove yourself to the public that you are a very good player either online or offline. Then, you could be considered as one of a kind that could be a champion in major tournaments. By choosing the very few fighting game of your choice, you will be able to concentrate on the few and get better result. I recommend you to choose not more than three fighting games and follow its sequels. When you choose a few fighting game and follow its sequels, you will understand the basics of the game better. You would also be familiar with their sequels over the years as the developers keep releasing new sequels. This helps you to get used to the fighting game, which enhances your performance unlike you jumping from one fighting game to another, or from one new fighting game to another new one. Unless, you are sure that the new fighting game will be good enough to be accepted as a line-up for major tournament.

If you want to be the best in a particular fighting game, you may have to start from the scratch of that game. For example, if you choose Mortal Kombat, you should get the game and start learning the basics of Mortal Kombat One since the game do not have auto combo (e.g. HP, HP, HK, back HK), it only has special moves and normal moves like: uppercut, sweep, throw, jab, rushing punches, and pokes. After you are done with Mortal Kombat, get Mortal Kombat 2, and continue learning it too. In Mortal Kombat 2, you will learn cross up jump kicks, how to execute special moves in the air. In Mortal Kombat 3, you will learn how to execute auto combos, how to run then quickly tap your combos/throws/sweeps/cross-ups/special moves, or run and quickly block or duck an incoming attack. In Mortal Kombat 4, you will learn how to use your environment like picking and throwing stones, picking weapons and being careful not to get hit because once you get hit, your weapon falls, and the use of your 3D environment to dodge projectiles or weapons. In Mortal Kombat V: Deadly Alliance, you will learn advanced combos (mixing combos from one variation to another), how to dodge not just projectiles, but physical attacks, how to counter attacks, how to switch from weapon variation to another variation. In Mortal Kombat 6: Deception, you will learn about the proper importance of arenas, and how not to be hit off the arena into a pit. Mortal Kombat 8: Armageddon is the combination of Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance and Mortal Kombat Deception with a little new stuff too. Learning it is good. I would recommend you to learn Mortal Kombat vs. DC universe if you choose Injustice: gods among us as the fighting game of choice. But it shouldn’t be an exceptional. In Mortal Kombat 9, you will learn how to use X-Rays, know the difference between enhanced special moves from normal special move, how to properly dash forward or backward, how to reject an opponent’s throw, and how to use advanced combos with dash. Hey! I haven’t forgotten about finishing moves. I refused to talk about it because it’s not that important. Finishing moves are part of entertainment. They are used to make your opponent feel defeated or demoralized. Some use it as a winning satisfaction. One of the sweetest things to me in Mortal Kombat is when the announcer says “Finish Him,” then I move close to the opponent’s character. Just as people are expecting me to execute a finishing move, I will tap down button like 3 times (to make them think Iwant to do the finishing move) then suddenly jump back to allow the character fall (without doing the finishing move.) Hum hum ha ha ha ha ha! I often get booed after doing that. Try to avoid unpopular fighting games or any fighting game that lacks sequel potentials since they might not be recognized or accepted in major fighting game tournaments like “Evolution Fighting Game Tournament.” If you are confused on which fighting game is more preferable to choose for competitive gaming or major tournament, I recommend you to choose any of the following games below: * Street Fighter series * Super Smash Bros series * King of Fighters series * Injustice: gods among us series * Killer Instinct series * Marvel vs. Capcom series * Dead or Alive series * Mortal Kombat series * Tekken series * Virtual Fighter series * Guilty Gear series * Blazblue series * Soul Calibur series * Samurai Showdown series *The above mentioned fighting games are okay. If only, you are confused on the fighting game you want to be playing. I believe that there might be some new one’s coming out in future. But for now, just go with these popular ones and you will not regret it.
