Help a newbie

So I always loved the mk games , but I didn't have the chance to play mk9 since i didn't have any console(ps3 or xbox 360), but now with the release on the pc I can finally play.I really like Sonya and i'd like someone to help me with the basics cause im a total newbie at fighting games.I really don't understand any term of the guides and that's the main reason of my post.Anyway thanks in advance.

The little icons during the Versus loading screen are for Kombat Kodes. Just like in MK3 and MK4!
