Getting a MK scene started in your area

Bryant was asking me about what he should do about how to get other players in your area into playing UMK3 or anyother MK, as well as getting a scene going in your area.

Players, please share and discuss ways Bryant as well as anyone else can get this started.

I atleast have help. Isaac is known in FL by a lot of people and is respected as a player. He likes umk3. so if i can get him to start playing again he can basically spread the word and i am pretty sure people will listen to him

Man I already found 3 people who arent apart of the online umk community who are actually quite decent at umk3 in FL. Four v2, Kaijin, and matt wad.

Got about 7-8 of us here in Utah in the currently idle SFIV scene that are interested in playing UMK3. Once our fearless leader is done with his insane work schedule (30 hours shifts ) and orders the AiAB sticks, we are in business! I know where a UMK3 cab is to buy locally (MKII also), just got to come up with the $$.

Many people don't know this but the MK scene was HUGE here in Utah. When the scene was live in the arcades, there were always at least 20 people around the MKII machines waiting to play all day long. There were more when MK3 first hit, then it died down until UMK3 was released. The UMK3 scene was alive and kicking until MKT and MK4 came out then the arcades died shortly after that.

I'm doing what I can to get the interest going here, and I can't wait.

You'd have a 4th if I was still there. I'm on South Carolina for now, but I used to be at Tampa Lanes almost every weekend when UMK3 was big. I was never very good, tho. :(

I've really been considering buying a cab for the longest time JUST to gain attention for the game and community in my area. The problems are, my friends have just as less time as I do to play the game, my job won't endorse it (even though they have ridiculous entertainment setups), and it's more expensive than I wish.

It's crossed my mind several times to just buy a cab to have one and play on my own time and with whoever I can, it just wouldn't get enough attention to be worth it though.

You dont need a cab to get a scene started. just get people interested in the game by any means and go from there.

and ftr, just keep checking ebay for cabs and every once in a while you will come across a cheap one in the area you live.

I would try to just get a stick first and practice on that. Try your best to attend some kind of tournament that's as close as possible and ask about getting UMK3 there. There have to be players around. Every region/even state has them, they just don't know where to do.

On a very serious note Droopy, Tim Static and Konqrr are running UMK3 scenes in their areas, we run most of the North East since the states are smaller and we have a dense population. We can't be responsible for Texas and Florida/Georgia. All these areas have their own players, they just have to do a little work to get it going. Big head start though.

Just moved the previous 3 posts to this thread to keep it on track and keep the other thread clean.

Droopy, both Tim and Shock are right though. If you want to see UMK3, or any MK for that matter, at a tournament, the best thing to do is to keep tabs on the tournament scene in your area, as well as the tournament calendar on SRK.

Texas is HUGE state, and there must be tournaments going on there. Go to the SRK calendar, and look to see if you can find a tournament in TX.

If you can't, then plan one yourself. Here are some basic steps:

1. Arm yourself with knowledge. For you to do this, you need one important piece of information...Super Street Fighter 4 MUST be your headline tournament or you won't get a turnout. In order to cover venue fees, you need people...SSF4 draws people. Make sure you understand the basics of running brackets and tournament play style so you can answer any questions that come up.

2. Get some basic interest, decide how many people you want at the tournament.

3. Find a small venue...something that can take like 50 people or so, maybe 100 at most. Catering halls, VFW halls, mom & pop gaming stores are always looking for someone to rent some space. Play-n-Trade is usually a good place to hold a tournament. Price it out and see if you can work a deal. I've seen places agree to take percentage of the venue fee from the attendees instead of a set price. If a place is in need of the business, they will work out a deal.

4. PROMOTE! Your tournament should have at least 1 month advance notice, but 6 weeks is ideal. Make sure you don't schedule your local tournament on the date of a major tournament, and try to avoid other local tournaments in your area on the same date. Post the tournament, it's rules, its fees, location, date and time on SRK, UMK, TYM, CMK, etc... get the word out and make sure you get people there.

5. Make sure that UMK3 is at your tournament.

Running an entire tournament is a huge undertaking, I would say stick to locating big tournaments in your area, they happen all the time in Texas, and getting a UMK3 tournament there. I know it's a massive state but there's gotta be something you could do. We use to post tournament info on the calendar here and I remember a great number of Texas tournaments going up regularly. I'm willing to talk to coordinators through email about the seriousness of running UMK3 tournaments but I'm not yet willing to travel great distances just to run a tournament. I didn't have to show up in Ohio for there to be a tournament at SBR and I was greatly appreciative of that because they have taken the initiative there and got things going a while back. I want to hear about tournaments run in every major region of the country and I think it can happen. You'd be surprised if you just showed up with one other person you know with enough to get the game going, at how many people will come by and play. It's gotta start somwehere and it's not always going to be a blow out.

What was it, Castle Golf 6 or 7.... we only had like 8 players but we had EVERYONE watching us in the room for you and LI Joe in the grand finals. It was a small turnout, but people were playing non-stop...and not just the UMK3 players...random people were playing too...and they were playing alot. That's kinda how we got Darren started...LOL

What Shock said is the best way to start up.

Basically, find a tourney you'd like to attend in your area, get on their thread and just ask if they are allowing side tourneys to be run.

You will be able to gauge the interest, and you will probably get 4-5 people to join up with you and make it happen.

Just be prepared to bring and dedicate your own setup (tv, console, game AND enough controllers or sticks for everyone). You can't assume that there will be a space and setup for you to play just because they're allowing it to happen.
