1. Kung Lao has mobility. What does that mean?

His ability to be wherever he wants to be on the map is very good. Through the use of teleports, f3 roll [which is special cancelable] and deliberately whiffed divekicks. After a little practice you will understand the exact distance which a divekick travels, this allows you to deliberately whiff the kick into near instant pressure. If your divekick is blocked however, you will eat a full punish.


2. How do I do 21212 / 21212 is too hard / 21212 is useless, I don't need it / I remove my hand from the dpad to perform 21212.

21212 is a huge part of the KL game. It build a lot of meter. The first attack comes out in only 7 frames. Both 21212 and 212121 can be input in the blink of an eye on an fight stick. It can be cancelled into spin at 2 points. The string opens the opportunity for mix up depending on your input: 21212 is the regular combo, but if your opponent is crouch blocking, input 212121 for an overhead attack. Don't be predictable with this because a number of characters can punish you for it. If you are using a default pad, you might have trouble performing the input. Personally I play arcade stick, but I suggest you buy a fight-pad and use the Tekken Grip. This means using your index and middle fingers on the face buttons. This grip can also be used on a default pad but access to your X-Ray and Block are somewhat hindered. If you don't like the Tekken grip, it's also possible to input the move by sliding your thumb quickly between the 1 and 2. Some people remove their hand from the d-pad to input the attack. I highly suggest you do not do this, you should always have control over your movement whether its to duck an attack or jump or walk backwards or whatever it is, you should never lose control of your movement - not only this but moving your hand physically from one side of the control to the other clearly allows an opportunity for error especially if you are under pressure and need to whip out the command on reaction, the time frame in which you move your left hand to the face buttons is at least a couple of frames, and then you have to move your hand back into a comfortable position on the control immediately in order to regain your mobility, especially important if you've cancelled into a spin combo.


3. How do I do the Plum Flower attack? [241+3 2]

The input window is very small but with practice you can use visual cues to hit the attack at just the right time. It's worth your time learning the exact timing [which is about just when KL lifts the opponents leg - try and you will feel it out], because it stacks on a lot of damage from your combos.


4. Tele into instant 3? Delayed 3? What is this?

Depending on when you input the 3, you will get a different result. Delayed 3 allows for a very damaging combo opportunity, but is also open to retaliation in the form of uppercut or poke or whatever punish the opponent character has available [sometimes this can be a high damage combo]. Instant 3 does not grant combo opportunity but comes out faster which can poke-out your opponents attempts at punishing when they expect a delayed 3, or if they are tying to get out of the teleport pressure in an unsafe way. There are deeper uses for the tele 3 but you will find them already detailed in other threads.

wow. this is good shit. i think i heard a few members talking about how you should do one of these for every character...

regarding the 212122121221 string using d-pad, i find its easiest if you press 2, then follow with two quick swipes of the thumb from 1 to 2. so for 2 12 12, its just press sweep sweep. :p

24 Low Hat!
Beautiful. Now we dont have to worry about having a million threads on the Plum Flower string. Although outdated, you might want to add in a section about Kung Lao's mixups with overhead/low hat and why they arent recommended. Mostly low hat stuff i guess, noobs seem to love to add low hat at the end of every string but its going to get you blown up pretty quickly.

This is great. I myself made a thread to see if anyone wanted to be something a little similar to Ketchup and Mustard. Only with Liu and Lao, but I guess noyone did. Other than that, the Q&A Thread serves its purpose. :cool:

Seconded. This was a problem for me for the longest fucking time, but I got the hang of it.
Once you get the reflex down, it gets a lot easier over time.
