Although EGL's inaugural $10,000 tournament got off to a bit of a .. rocky .. start this weekend, by Sunday most of the issues were straightened out -- and we were treated to a highly enjoyable Top 16. With Yomi travelling to make the event, there were a lot of familiar high-level players appearing in today's Top 8, and a lot of great matches to be played.

One of the things that makes these tournaments so fascinating to watch is the fact that tourney matches between the same players often have different results; and that was visible in spades today. Denzell 'DJT' Terry was able to send Sonic Fox to Losers, followed by WoundCowboy running back the score against DJT (who'd recently beaten him at EVO). A closely-fought contest between Slayer and Michaelangelo ended with Mike's Quan Chi narrowly meeting a last-second defeat, and ForeverKing's predator was more than MIT's trusty Tanya (and eventually Raiden) were able to handle.

And as the tournament neared it's finale, the Losers' Finals was marked by contrast: young Sonic Fox had been running the gamut of characters, playing Predator, Kitana, Shinnok, and Erron black before the day was over. Whereas DJT, often lauded for his ability to use a full list of characters to his advantage, had been steadfastly sticking with Tremor. An intense battle between the two (featuring some positively excellent gameplay) came down to the final round -- and in an amazing final match, Sonic and DJT traded blow for blow until DJT finally edged him out and sent him home.

And so the stage was set, with WoundCowboy and Denzell in Grand Finals. And sitting in Winners, WoundCowboy was prepared -- making ample use of Shinnok's zoning to frustrate DJT's attempts to start his offense, and using Shinnok's generous jump-in-punch hitbox to contest the airspace. And DJT was finally forced to break his steely resolve and bring forth his trusty Tempest Kung Lao. In the end, Cowboy was able to keep his composure and net himself his first major win in convincing fashion.

Congratulations to Cowboy for putting Shinnok on the roster of Mortal Kombat X tournament winners against a difficult field; and congrats to everyone who came to EGL to make it such an enjoyable event to watch.
