Controversial Players

Let's spice shit up around here!

In the Fighting Game Community, there's really good gamers, villains, gimmicks, and personalities.

Some think being controversial in video games is too dramatic. Some think it brings interest, excitement, and dare I say INSPIRATION to be the best, to beat the best.

Then again, controversy can be spun out of anything. From gamer chicks wanting respect causing a scene, to having a Furry represent as the best NRS gamer now.

My ?Question? is...what is your take on controversial players? You can go with any angle you want with this topic. Name a particular gamer, certain situation, either for controversy, against controversy, etc etc.

The floor is yours my fellow gamers :)

Good gamers? Yes.
Villains? Not really though there are an increasing number of wannabes.
Gimmicks? Unless we're counting cosplay as a gimmick again I'd say 'not really'.
Personalities? If we're talking about people who're known solely or mostly for who they are rather than what they've accomplished then yeah, the FGC probably has more of those than are necessary.

I would say that my hope for the FGC is that one day the scene as a whole will be both big enough and a big enough deal that I could walk into a casino and wager on whatever major is happening that weekend. This requires two things: growth and integrity of the product. The 'growth' part we're slowly getting down. Similarly the integrity end is improving as well. I would label anyone who's undermining the growth of the FGC as an idiot and I would label anyone who's undermining the integrity of the FGC as controversial per OPs label.

When I see a top player on Twitter talking about how they need a certain finish at the next event my first thought should be along the lines of "I hope they do well". My first thought should not be "I wonder what's going to happen if they get matched up against a friend of theirs who has already qualified". Unfortunately that's where we're at at the moment.

We're all from Earthrealm. If not, cool pic brah.
I think FChamp is a good talking point. He talks heaps of shit, and disrespects his opponents really hard, he's well known for it and heavily disliked by many. Yet you hear these accounts from people who met him in real life and were nervous to play against him due to his villain rep, play against the guy, but then see him take personal time out to give them proper pointers on what they can do to improve, and encourage them to keep playing and getting better.

He's playing the villain but at the end of the day it's to get him buzzing more, to add drama to the scene to keep people tuning in, and just to have some fun talking some shit. But if you speak to the guy in real life though and aren't a high level competitor of his, he's described as friendly and helpful, and loves the scene as much as anyone. The fgc will always have its heels, controversial isn't necessarily a bad thing

I feel like some people nowadays take things too personally. Trash talking and mocking has been a part of anything competitive for ages. It also serves as a strategy to get into your opponents head.

Trash talking also brings hype in almost all competitive situations. And i don't think i need to describe the feeling after beating someone who was trash talking. So as far as trash talking your opponent goes im all for it.

People talked trash in the arcades, and we all dealt with it and toughened up.

People talk trash in sports, too. It's the nature of competition and it help to light the fire of interest in a match.

The irony of someone playing/supporting a T or M-rated game, but being offended by teabagging, for example, is an unending source of humor to me ;)

It's like the 'gentle gangster' or 'sensitive thug' archetype.. Haha.

Most def! Society nowadays is overly sensitive of mostly everything. I loves me some controversy. It makes the sport exciting! Whether its just a character or actual grudge rivalry, I'm most def for THAT!

DAMN! I remember THOSE days playing SF 2 Arcade at the pizza joint, playing as Vega, clawing the shit out of EVERYBODY! Winning and talking my shit while doing so! It's part of the game!

And yes that irony TEA is so deliciousable! lol

This is why I like (to hate) Fchamp. it's mostly an act, he's fun to watch and he's not actively harming anyone or the community.

but then there's people like Low Tier God who made fun of Brolylegs' disability when he lost against him online. Screw him and people like him. that's the kind of stuff that's shouldn't be tolerated in the FGC, not friendly trash talk.

See, i dont know too many names in the FGC cuz i just basically got into the scene. But has there actually been any fights because of heated rivalries before ?Question mark?

In NRS community lore, Napalm once punched somebody at a tournament before. But that wasn't a true rivalry (it only had one side) -- it just confirmed Napalm to be a jerk.

The Capcom side of the fence has a couple of notable physical confrontations, though (including a couple that were even caught on video).

Trash talking is always a sensitive subject.
On one hand, it is mostly harmless and can work psychologically to your advantage in a match.
On the other hand, it is bullying, and poking fun at someone isn't nice to do in any context ever, and some people might take it too seriously if it becomes a recurring cycle, where they lose and get tea bagged or trash talked constantly. I never got the point of teabagging, it just makes you look really immature IMO, just some people live for it. Same with trash talking. That's damn near the same thing as bullying, especially since people you play against don't know you mean well. I personally don't get triggered when someone teabags, but I won't deny that in MKX it was super annoying. Whatever though.
So I guess so long as the person talking trash can back up their talk, it's whatever.
But you're really sad and pathetic if you actually believe the crap you're saying.

It's not really a sensitive subject, just sensitive people. I came from an era where at times, that was part of strategy and you toughen up. I get the whole bullying shit this era has brought awareness too and blah blah blah. My point is....THERE'S NO CRYING IN VIDEO GAMES! Toughen up, butternuts!:DOGE

That's NOT controversy. That is OBSESSION. And I will pray for that poor soul.
