Most people can't just be like "omg my attention span is worse than a goldfish" and get put on ADHD medication.

A referral to a neurologist is in order (for adults) or a behavioral health doctor (for children) and then a Vanderbilt test is administered. Afterwards, it is compared to other results and one of three things happen: it determines you need it, don't need it or it comes back inconclusive.

All of this takes time. If a doctor/physician outright writes you a script for this without any kind of testing, they're the type of doctor that just doles out medication to take the simplest route to being done and moving on to the next patient.

Keep in mind: your experiences don't govern everyone else's experiences, so trying to state them as the norm or giving absolutely false percentages is foolish.
