Resident Evil Series going back to Classic Survival Horror

Faded Dreams V

Retired June 2012. Unretired June 2013.
Capcom is too focused on catering to the West by borrowing elements from our top-selling games, and straying away from the source material of the Resident Evil games. If they want to create an action-orientated shooting game, then they should make a new IP instead of changing the genre of the series that, ironically, coined and popularized the term "Survival Horror."

It makes no sense either because Resident Evil 4 had everything this series needed--the tone, the atmosphere, and the GREAT GAMEPLAY. They don't need to go all the way back to the RE1-RE:CV formula. It's true, that won't sell well in this generation. However, they shouldn't forget what made those games so popular during their respective era, and among their market niche. IMO, Resident Evil Revelations almost had it right (my favorite 3DS game, btw). However, there were several shortcomings that held the game back: mandatory action orientated segments that shifted the game away from Jill, and killed the momentum of the story; interactions with characters via radio or walky-talky, as well as partners; and missed opportunities for cheap startles (it's like they're scared to scare the players....wut?).

Those issues with Revelations are actually general design choices they need to remedy if they decide to reboot the series. Here are some ideas that would help keep the survival horror aspect of the game prevalent without having to change the modern gameplay:
1. A new protagonist- Someone who does NOT possess superhuman combat and survival skills (but isn't whiny either...). I know everyone likes Chris, Leon, Jill, etc, but come on....the creators have developed them into super characters. They just don't fit a survival horror environment anymore. In Resident Evil 2, Leon was just a regular cop, and Claire is just an average girl. They were ordinary characters that had to go through ridiculous odds to survive. Mind you, characterization doesn't need to affect gameplay--it can still be an over-the-shoulder shooter like the recent games, only with the pace of Revelations and RE4. Also, fan favorite characters can still appear.

2. Tone/Atmosphere/Music - These are the most important elements to ANY horror media. Recent Resident Evil games have action-packed music, and they're set in broad daylight. Back in Resident Evil 4 (the first half, anyways), you had to walk around in woods, at times in the dark, and other times foggy; it was unsettling, and that worked. Works even better when they implement cheap scares in specific areas because why the fuck not? Also, monster aesthetics by themselves don't do ANYTHING. The music accompanying their appearance is what makes them frightening.
For example, Regenerators:
.
How about U3?
Tyrant?
Now let's take a look at this shit:
...Yeah. -.-

3. Partners. Lose them - When the main character has a partner, the mood is killed. When that sense of loneliness and helplessness is gone, the game is not scary. Back in RE1, Jill had her partners, but they weren't in contact with her at all times, or following her everywhere. We can still have Co-Op without this, mind you. It just wouldn't feel very...well, believable.

4. Leave action-packed segments for optional modes like Mercenaries or Raid - Speaks for itself. BTW, I loved Raid Mode in Revelations. Better than Mercenaries imo.

And with that....I have wasted 30 minutes of my 4 hour lunch break. Yay me! =D

I think it would be cool if they felt like they needed to have co-op in the game to actually have the players separated for a huge portion of the game so there is still the feeling of being isolated. They could do cool stuff like cut off/break up the voice connection between the two players in the case of some sort of event happening. With that being said I definitely perfer the games single player with WAYYYYYYYY less action.

Dead Space 1 wasn't too bad, and also, Zombi U has really great atmosphere. Classic survival horror fans should really check out Zombi U--it is a gem if that's your thing.

That genre has been drying up over the years though--sad :(
ZombiU is so unpolished its not even funny.

Not real survival horror, real survival horror........this is like the those annoying arguments of "real" metal music and not "real" metal.

That Indigo Prophecy scene in the insane asylum was beyond cheesy. Resident Evil 1 in my opinion was a good survival horror game, as long as you played as chris redfield, because everything was harder. The Flamethrower was a useless weapon, so I don't know why that was even brought up. I don't remember having a crazy amount of ammo by the end. I remember the beginning being the biggest pain, because you only had 6 inventory slots and you also had to use small keys to open desks.

But to each his own. I think Resident Evil as a series has gone severely downhill. I liked 4, but even 4 wasn't really scary or like the originals. 5 to me was a huge let down. It was a fun game don't get me wrong, but not really "resident" evil. I have yet to play 6. I'm waiting until it's really cheap.

I was thinking of WarZ when you mentioned this game haha. DayZ (which is what WarZ ripped off) is an amazing game that any zombie/survival horror fan should check out.
that game is also really glitchy and unpolished.

It's not even a game, its a mod.

Someone that enjoys or wants to try out"true" survival-horror games and asks for recommendations probably wouldn't enjoy a Dead Space or the like. It helps to make the distinction in some cases.

I liked it but if that's how you feel. I didn't find it that much more difficult. I was talking the flamethrower of RE2. I do and I did. Even if they gave you more slots you still wouldn't have an abundance of weapons or ammo in the beginning, all it did was lead to more backtracking than necessary.

Agreed. It has but my reasons are different than your more than likely. Because there was no fixed camera or abundance of jump scares, RE1 with RE4s camera would've been weak. 5 was terrible and 6 was good at times but too sloppy.

I'd give my left ovary for a decent new Fatal Frame...

PS2 era was the glory days of survival horror. Haunting ground, Rule of Rose, Kuon, Siren, couple Silent Hills and FFs... Life was good.

Now we just have Alice MR and Alan Wake. :( Someone scare me already!
Alan Wake not horror but psychological thriller. But the writign was SOOOOOOOOOOO good. Too bad Remedy can't shit out games very often. But when they do, they shit HARD!

As for this, I'm really hoping they don't screw ths up.But I've never trusted Capcom for anything other than a Megaman game so yea.For now I'll just wait for Aliens: Colonial Marines to see if they deliver. My expectations are high.

Crossing my fingers X

One of the most beautiful songs in any video game out there, belonging to my favorite game out there lol.

I'm not going to read all these comments, but it's about time. I didn't even purchase RE6 because I felt the gameplay would be like RE5. I miss playing RE1-3. They are still the best.

Please no reboot. Look what happened to everyone's favorite demon hunter, Dante. Capcom should just continue the series but go back to survival horror classics.
DmC is pretty good so far actually, but from what i hear, they are sticking with the main series, so it may turn out to have to DmC series going at once, the OG one, and the Rebooted one.

i think they should do this with RE.

Can someone explain to me why everyone seems to think because of this interview that's it's gonna go back to the glory days?

As far as I'm concerned it only means that he wants to aim for "Scary" games. It doesn't mean back to old school garbage camera angles.

I liked the old games I recently streamed RE1 remake on the gamecube.

But no where did I see they would "aim for the old formula" I mean direct me if I'm wrong or missing it.

I also heard something about "if we do the reboot it must be open world" what does this mean exactly? If it means it's gonna be like Fall-out count me out.

Also I'm not down for a reboot, I already built this opinion on all these developed characters. What's so hard about keeping the over shoulder camera style? I liked the CONTROL in Resident evil 6.

All they have to do is make the atmosphere omnious and scary.

If they can manage to make each enemy/zombie a huge threat to your ammo supply and Health. (Unlike RE6 where you can easily kill 150 zombies in a row on mercenairies easily by yourself) That alone will make these scarrier. And not so often enemy encounters.

You don't want NO enemies but you don't want to be flooded against them.

that's my opinion.

keep the formula for controls and camera ect. Just make it scary. I mean is it really that big of a deal?

Never was a fan of RE, but didn't really play them until the more recent ones. But, classic survivor with limited ammo/resources and a scary atmosphere while killing zombies? SIGN ME UP PLS!

DMC was a dope game. A reboot, it was not. It was a prequel. All the "Omg Dantes hair is gay"-ness needs to stop. If it really bothers you that much, download the white hair skin and get over it.

RE6 was sweet as well. But imo 4/5/and 6 should have been called something else. As they were completely different games.

FF sucks

Doom 3 was the scariest game ever. Idgaf.

Titties.

Trust me it's not the hair. I don't know if you played the new DmC and the originals, but it's not the hair. It's Dante in general he is not Dante from DMC. He is not his cool self. I could go on about new Dante vs Old Dante but there's no point. Oh and not to mention the game runs at 30 fps. Terrible camera feature. And boss fights can be beaten while sleeping. DmC sucked.

Guys I also recommend "The Witch's House" it's a free Indie game but it captures the essence of a good horror game even without the supporting visuals.

Its ending is also one of the most fucked up endings in ANY storyline.

Old post I know I know, but I don't know how I feel about Deadly Premonition. The game itself SUUUUUUUUUUUCKS but the soundtrack and the characters are so lovable lol.

first off DmC is not a prequel, its a non canon americanized origin story. and second, its quite a good game actually, its not quite as hard as dmc3 but it can still give u a decent challenge

re1 was the only one that scred the shit out of me, when that dog jumped through the window. the best part of it is, it happens early on in the game and you haven't gotten the hang of the controls yet, so that dog bit me a few times before I could kill him. imo the only way they can bring back life to the survival horror genre is when they introduce completely new characters. characters like leon and chris are too experienced and killing off zombies isnt a big deal anymore lol.

1st Re didn't really scare me. Jump scares are the cheapest form of scares and they don't last very long. Its all about the atmosphere and giving the gamer a sense of dread, like they know they're not safe there so they better hurry an gtfo. You can tell they're doing something right if the game still effects you even AFTER you've turned the system off. Thats what they should be going for.

honestly, i think they shouldn't do a reboot. I think they should keep the current characters the way they are, but they should have other games about new characters that havent really had all that much experience.

i dunno about you guys, but i liked Jake in Re6, he was by far my fav character to play as. I wanna see him come back :D

well thats another problem I have, jake has supernatural abilities so how are they going to make a survival horror with a protagonist like that?

Of course he isn't the original Dante. He hasn't been fighting demons for half his life, yet. The boss battles where more cinematic than hard, but I'm ok with that. If you went out and bought DMC over renting it, that was a mistake. Dmc has never in the history of the game been worth buying.
