What's new

What is your day 1 hot take?

Syd Barrett Lives

Italian Psychopath
  • from a technical standoint the game is amazing. Graphics, sound, art design, details, everything.
  • story is as expected. Cool looking but a mess plotwise. Plot holes, characters thrown in and out without rhyme or reason, things that doesn't make sense....I can't undestand how they always mess this up so much.
  • Krypt is very cool looking and fun to navigate, it really makes you wonder about the infamous "third person action game" Boon has been wanting to make for years.
  • the grinding/mtx/loot boxes aspect of the game is way worse that I imagined.
  • gameplay is growing on me. So far I like it more than MKX but less than MK9.
  • too soon to talk about characters but some I was really hyped about seems underwhelming.
  • the variations/customization aspect is bad as expected. I'm on the "let's use kustom variations in ranked" camp. Having to create variations just to even try the moves is stupid. Having unused moves is a waste. And why the fuck the tournament variations aren't the default option only NRS knows.

Noob Saibot is BACK!
-Visually the game is very impressive. All the characters and environments look beautiful and overall it feels pretty good to play.
-The tutorials and explanation of mechanics are amazing. New players should have a much easier time levelling up!
-Most characters feel a bit stiff.
-Towers don't seem especially enjoyable or rewarding.
-Variation system seems very slapped together. Why have default different from tourney varaitions? It's silly that you have to specifically create it to use it.
-Variations you create are deleted almost instantly, which makes playing tourney variations even more of a pain.
-I can't unlock anything from the tutorials because it can't connect to the servers.
-The Krypt is amazing so far, although with the random drops and absurd grind it all goes to waste.
-Specials that don't use face buttons feel bad when cancelling from 1 hit normals (any special such as Noob's Down-Up teleslam.)
-Noob is underwhelming. His lack of any viable overhead makes opening the opponent nearly impossible.

The Krypt is a goddamn randomized disaster. As much as I hated some of the nonsense in MKX, I feel like they might have stripped a bit too much away from MK11. Everything just feels kind of bland and dumbed-down. Allowing custom variation in tournament mode would be a huge step in the right direction, though.

Remember that opening people up comes in many different forms. Strike-throw, conditioning, staggering, switching up zoning timing from fullscreen, frame traps, etc. Don’ t know how many of those Noob will end up having, but try to find what you can

Gunna have to strongly disagree, spending defensive meter to make his best strings, f22 and b12, +1 and neutral respectively is a bad tradeoff while many other characters can get roughly the same results for no meter, and his NDC preset has no combo damage, no corner carry, no restand (which got nerfed to +2 from +6), no mixups, and he looses his default diagonal air saw for the shitty horizontal one.
F2 ndc is +3 so still good ,no one gets that off of a 10f mid. you still have a great b1 that with a string that is safe and cant be flawless blocked , can be made plus with your cancels , a 9f mid that's also safe and plus with cancels. I'm sorry but he isnt bad. Sure his presets are dog shit and he could definitely use better ones but hes still decent.

the game calculates this for you now, so yes.
lol aside from jacqui (which I'm not even sure has them) who else has + frames off their cancels? Even more who has viable cancels? Erron is one with his dd3 but none of them are plus. And Jacqui too but that's it. Kabal isnt bad whatsoever, I think you're forgetting that his buttons are ridiculously strong even if his presets are bad.

You get these things at the cost of your breaker and F2/B1 NDC aren't hit confirmable like F22 and B12 so all you really get off them is a D1/grab mixup (f4 off the F2NDC but that still trades with some D1's), assuming you're in range for that. Even if you could hit confirm them you get a max of 268 damage with 1 bar (no oki) and you can't even use two bars in a combo. Losing diagonal air buzzsaw is a big hit too since his jump in 2 combined with that is probably the only thing I would qualify as being above average for him.

Honestly, I'd take meterless cancels that leave me at like -1ish over spending a defensive bar for +1. I may have been being a bit hyperbolic by calling him garbage but he is by no means a great character.

The game looks and feels amazing. That being said..I was getting MKA vibes with the watered down variation and characters. Not feeling the single player mode at all. I dont know if they picked the wrong team to say "This is fine" or the didn't have time towards the release date.

The tutorials are the best ever - very comprehensive. It has the potential to really up the game of casuals. This could result in more people playing competitively. I am super impressed by this!

The story line is a mess. The graphics in it are beautiful and I appreciate the quality / quantity of cut scenes.

Many of the standard variations are pretty dull or missing moves to make them interesting.

There are some fantastic stages and I appreciate the work NRS put in to them. Love the NRS one as a little fan service too :)

EDIT

One other thing... Fatal blows in their current iteration seem like too much reward for too little risk. You should get 1 FB attempt per match and if you use it and it's blocked, you should lose it. I think that would make people be a little tactical with it rather than just throwing it out.

The game is ridiculously bare and dumbed down as a way to handle so the mish-mash of mechanics and the bastardised copying of guilty gear's instant blocking. The combo system is dry, meter is abundant and is only ever really depleted by dropping out of combos and instant blocking moves.

Krushing blows are cheap extra damage, fatal blows are the worst comeback mechanic I've seen, completely free.

A lot of variations are complete jokes, a bunch of frame data doesn't make sense, zoning is very very meh and the entire game feels like it's still in beta.

Kotal is extremely mediocre and barebones, his command grab is nearly complete trash and his 2nd variation is a straight up joke.

NRS is going with something new, it doesn't look good at all.

Kollector was good now is fucking trash. Whatever damage he had before is not gone while others getting easy ass 40% for nothing.
I dont mind the infinite being gone but they took it all away and the hot fix was so hot that they didnt even update the notation to not include the ability to cancel his up mace. I honestly think its just a quick ass bandaid fix so people didnt abuse it and so they could have time to fix it. Hopefully thats true and all they are doing is making the cancel cost stamina.
His Vials of Sorrow being -27 makes the entire variation worthless outside of a few cheese kills with puddle.
Not to mention that hes one of the slowest characters in game by a mile. Hell, he might be the slowest or at least the most clunky.
This shit feels like an even worse day 1 shinnok before anything but at least he had decent normals that didnt slug him along.

TLDR: Wait for me BBTag.

The game does feel extremely bare bones. Almost like they had more plans but put the rest into the krypt. Hopefully they fix this mess cause its not fun to play in the slightest. Feels like there was 0 testing going on.

D'Vorah for KP2 copium
1: As expected, the tournament variation system is extremely limiting and frustrating due to most of them being mediocre combinations at best.

2: Friendship ended with D'Vorah. Jade is now my best friend. She's so damn fun and can comfortably manage most scenarios. She'll be my BEST best friend whenever NRS decides to give her a tournament variation with the bonus combo strings (which hopefully wont have the stupid broom sweep alongside it).

They at least added a “Flawless Victory” message when you get one. But it’s a shame the announcer doesn’t, ya know, announce it. I keep flawlessing people and it’s nowhere near as satisfying without the announcer reminding them that that just happened.

Side note, I take back what I said about Misery Blade. Apparently they nerfed it even though it isn’t even a tournament variation. And I’m actually liking Scorpion’s 2nd tournament variation. So now I don’t even want Misery Blade anymore LOL

Hot Take. I will have fun with this for a few months, maybe a year, and then I will be tired of all this grind bullshit, crap variations, preachy crap, and shit Net Code, and will tell NRS to fuck off. View is subject to change as much as 100% and I might possibly get the MK11 logo tattooed on my face. But after a few hours today, super mixed opinion, and besides how gorgeous everything looks and what I hope is a deep Meta (maybe I'll love the online eventually), I was not exactly swept off my feet.

Hot take:

(1) Story mode made me think we won't see a new MK in two years.

(2) Krypt, errors in various modes, and lack of QPT in Towers makes me think too many groups have their hands in the MK series.

(3) Core fighting seems fine right now, but will take at least a year to be where it needs to be. Two variations isn't right after MKX. Will be a great experience in about 4 months.

(4) Whatever the DLC is, we need it faster than MKX. Roster feels less complete.

(5) This is probably the first MK in ages I see myself continuing to play for years. It is a really good fighting game. Mechanics are strong.
