If he would have been a reptile disguised as human like in the OG games I think he would have been much popular with the new generation of fans. Of course if he would be a badass and not just a mindless jobber. Not one other ninja was so wasted like him design and story wise.

So it has to be Smoke or most likely Noob cuz of his hype now.

Personally I think Noob is too much edge Lord and I hate Smoke and his long hair... I do not have anything against long hair but his animations have been bad in MK 2011.

His design in the first 3 games was just a palette swap of all the other ninjas. You cant get more bland than that.

Of course you can if you are now just mindless reptilian looking guy named Reptile while before you have been a super secret character, first ever, who was disguised as human hiding his true self.

Far more interesting. Not saying that he shouldn't have a reptilian look as alt or main as well.

But I love the pallet swap bashing. Because no matter what people still lived a certain Cyborg or cried out for Human Smoke

I don't know if I'd call the Onaga episode a "story" for Reptile. It was kind of the exact opposite, a way to get rid of him and not have to bother with his story for a few games. Lol.

I thought MK9 Reptile was the best the character ever was. If people weren't playing him it's probably mostly because they don't like playing as him

I am absolutely willing to say that Smoke has likely surpassed Reptile in popularity. His portrayal in MK9 in particular had a hugely positive reception. Very fun to play, popular redesign, tremendous bro in the plot... I definitely remember him being one of the characters that generated some of the most buzz. I can't remember the last time Reptile's generated buzz beyond hating his design in MKDA or liking the walking back of the design back in MKSM (one of the more obscure titles, sadly).

Twitter polls, reddit polls etc. Sadly I no longer have the info but noob is vastly more popular than reptile. Possibly because he was gone for many years

Smoke is actually one of my favourites as well. Just that his hair animation was bad.

Noob is #3. The amount of people that requested him definitely surpasses Reptile at this point. Rain, Ermac, and Smoke are generally requested, too, but probably not as much as Noob.

I think Reptile lost a lot of steam as a character from MK4 onward. I love his reptilian design moreso than the original humanoid masked appearance (Excluding MK4 and MKDA...those were pretty wack). But the humanoid design was iconic and, though the change was largely an attempt to capitalize on advancing technology and less memory constraints, MK4 and MKDA's redesign of the look of Reptile left a sour taste in fans' mouths. That, and his story never really goes anywhere meaningful, sticking him to jobber roles. I actually think he may be bottom 2 in popularity amongst the male ninjas, sharing that placement with Chameleon.

But it tells a lot that Boon and Co weren't able to make Reptile awesome again and make him popular even for the new audience.

They made a far better work with every other ninja.

Reptile or Smoke have to be the 3rd most popular after scorpion (2) and subzero (1). Wish reptile wasn’t a jobber lizard now and an actual ninja like the old days.

Back then I'd say Reptile. But now its pretty much Noob. He's at the point where his lore is damn near known, and immediately recognizable to casuals, where Reptiles big point was he was the first hidden character, but that can only carry someone for so long. Would it help if he got his human skin back? Maybe. But yeah, I can confidently say right now the top 3 ninjas be: Scorpion, Subby, Noob

Was Reptile back in the 90's but now, easily Ermac or Noob. Both are in the top 5 most popular ninjas easily.

My order would be

1.Scorpion
2.Sub-Zero

3.Noob or Ermac but Noob probably a little more
4.Ermac
5.Reptile
6.Smoke
7.Rain
8.Chameleon
