Controller for PC

Hi all,

I upgraded my PC today, doubling my Ram and replacing my video card. I now have a:

- Intel Core i5 4440 3.10 GHz
- 16 GB Ram
- nVidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Windforce OC 6G
- Windows 10 Home October 2018 Update

Interestingly, after the hardware upgrade, my Controller is no longer working.

For years I've used the Hori Gempad EX for Xbox 360, an older pad and one that's officially never been supported for PC, but it always worked. Now for some reason it doesn't, and nothing I've tried has resolved this.

Device Manager originally recognized it by name since it was working before, but of course there are no Driver updates or anything for it. I Uninstalled it and hoped that Windows 10 would automatically re-install as a last resort, but no dice and now it no longer recognizes the device by name either.

If anyone has any troubleshooting suggestions, please go ahead!

Otherwise, assuming it's no longer an option for my PC, I'm looking for Controller recommendations. How's the Xbox One Controller, since I know that's properly PC supported? Being a wireless Controller, I'm assuming it connects via a USB cable? I don't own an Xbox One, or any current generation console, so if I went and bought a new Xbox One Controller, would it work out-of-the-box?

Thanks!

Correct. I think you can buy a "PC" version that comes with a wireless dongle for it. Otherwise standard controller with USB works.

Yep, just plug and play.
Thanks for the reply man, appreciate it. So if I bought an Xbox One Controller at, say, Best Buy, it has a USB cable in the box?

And the D-Pad, night and day for fighting games compared to the Xbox 360 Controller D-Pad?

No, pretty sure it doesn't, as it's designed for Xbox which is wireless. But you can use any mini-USB cable and it will work. And everyone's got at least 10 of those floating around.

And the D-Pad, night and day for fighting games compared to the Xbox 360 Controller D-Pad?
That's quite subjective. Personally it is night and day for me. 360-pad was mushy and hard to tell if you're doing left, or left-down at times. XB1 pad by comparison has very nice definition between the cardinal directions with a nice "click", but still easy to hit down-back etc.

Then there's others that hate it for their own reasons. Maybe used to playing on PS pads, or something else.

On my pc i generally use my dualshock 4 for general games and a HORI Fighting Commander for fighting games I play on pad, basically just NRS games. Dualshock 4's after toggling a setting in steam can be used natively in almost any game that launches through steam, and ds4Windows can be used for any game that doesn't.

Xbox One controllers can be used with the native Windows 10 drivers since they're both Microsoft products.

Thanks for the feedback all. Can the Dualshock 4 be used as a wired Controller on PC?

Regardless, looking around, it looks like Xbox One Controllers are on sale now, $40.00 off, here in Canada while Dualshock 4 Controllers are not. Found the Xbox One Controller that comes with a USB cable as well.

I'll be ordering this shortly.

Thanks!

Your circumstances are dire!

I play play wired :) you can also install a third party program (DS4windows) to make it behave like a 360 controller. I think you can also use it wirelessly but you gotta buy the official Sony adapter.

I don't use the bumpers on face lol, I hate that shit too. They've also kept the bumpers on the top too, so you're not forced to use those on the face.
Ah, didn't realize that. So there's four bumpers (or two bumpers and two Triggers) on top still?

I already ordered the Xbox One Controller for Windows, however if I'm not satisfied with it or need another Controller down the line, I'll likely get this one then. I take it on "PC" your system reads it as an Xbox 360 Controller?

imo the hori fighting pad is better because there is less travel time on the shoulder buttons compared the the spring triggers on ps4/xbone pad and the option to use face buttons or shoulder buttons. but it is a very minor difference and of course in all fighting games in the past 5 years people have won multiple events with ps4 pads and xbone pads so it wont hold you back

4 bumpers I guess you could say, but they're more like bigass buttons really. I personally really like having block being a button and not a trigger. I find sometimes with a trigger, I don't release it enough sometimes when I want to throw out a counter poke. But yeah, it's a really great controller for the price.

My PC reads it as 'Hori Fighting Commander' when I plug it in.

Hey all,

My Xbox One Controller for Windows arrived yesterday. It's already running the latest firmware and through the Xbox Accessories App I confirmed all the buttons and such are working.

I played a little Mortal Kombat XL last night, spent some time in the Training Room and then did two Single Fight sets against the Hard AI.

The pad will take a little getting used to, feels quite different from my Hori GemPad EX, but so far I'm liking it. The D-Pad is definitely better than a stock Xbox 360 Controller D-Pad, but I've noticed it's quite stiff. Is that normal?

I've also noticed rolling my thumb to do some quarter circle motions doesn't register properly all the time. As Kitana starting off in the Player 1 spot, for example, I typically can not get Fan Throw to work by thumb rolling. Ironically, I can get Lift to work easily by thumb rolling. The reverse is true if I'm on the Player 2 side.

I need to play/practice more, I just want to know if this is normal for the Pad? Would suck if I got a defective product and I'd want to return/exchange ASAP.

Ironically, with my Hori GemPad EX, I had the reverse issues in Mortal Kombat XL only (not in Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition), so it is possible the issue is the person behind the controller .

Thanks!

Yeah, I remember thinking the same thing when I used one. The pad is a bit stiff. But as long as you get those audible little clicks when you roll from down to forward or whatever, then it's fine. When I switched from an XB1 controller to my Hori FC, I thought the pad was really mushy. But nah, it's just that XB1 pads are just pretty stiff by design.

Good to know. I main Mileena and Kitana, and adjusting to the new pad wasn't a big deal with Mileena since she has no quarter circle motions in Piercing, and only a few in Ravenous. Kitana, on the other hand, different story.

I've done two sets with each character, and my second Kitana set was much improved over the first. Still though, not being able to do a simple Fan Toss from neutral, that's a bit frustrating!

Did you plug it into another device to see if it's the controller? Did you try another port on your machine to see if it's the usb dying? Did you try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers?
Yes to all. It still works on my Xbox 360. The Hori Gempad EX was never officially supported for PC, sadly, though it always worked for me before. Interestingly Windows 10 was able to detect it by name; it called it "Hori Gempad EX" under device manager.

After I upgraded my Ram and Video Card, oddly, Windows could no longer properly recognize or use the device.

Sounds unlikely. Ram and Video Driver literally has no weight on usb devices whatsoever. There is no interaction between those parts. What I COULD think of is that the change in memory somehow messed with the hardware allocation and I think a windoez reinstall would fix that.
Back up your data and format your system partition if you can. Might spare you a headache.
