What's new

Was Reptile meant to be portrayed as stronger than Scorpion/Sub Zero in the first movie?

I'm new here so I'd thought I'd ask anyway.

Most fans from what I've seen would agree that Reptile was portrayed as above both Scorpion and Sub Zero based off the fact he gave Kang a good whooping before eventually losing while Scorpion and Sub Zero fell fairly easily(Although PIS for the former).

Any thoughts on this?

I mean, yeah. In keeping with the fact that he was a tougher secret character in the first game.
The movie was loosely based on the first game and Reptile had been further established as another normal ninja in MK2 with his own abilities and such etc.

But still he looked better than both combined.

Not... really? I dunno. I personally never had that impression since they all die like bitches anyways. I don't think the fact Reptile lasts a little bit longer means anything.

Saint Op Omen

Savagely beating his super-ego with his id...
Maybe in the movie, he was sneaky cgi dude, probably a big part of that budget so they made him a lil screen time. . but nothing in the movie would really have done in game scorp or subs anyway.

Growing up with MK 1 and 2, I always assumed the more secret the character, the more of a badass they were. That air of secrecy and mythology surrounding the secret characters just made them seem “better”. So I always saw Repile as more badass than Sub or Scorpion, Smoke as even more badass, and Noob as the most badass.

Reptile's fight was added at the last minute after focus groups felt some action was lacking. With some time to fill, and the combined experience of making all the other scenes, the crew went all-out to ensure it was the best fight yet.
It just so happens to coincide with Reptile's "secret" status, and a good thing too; if they hadn't added it Reptile would have been nearly irrelevant to the plot.

My reasoning Reptile dies to Liu Kang in arguably the best fight in the movie, Scorpion dies to Johnny Cage in the second best fight in the movie.

And then Sub-Zero dies to a bucket of water.

IMO Reptile was the physically strongest and fastest of the ninjas. At the beginning of the fight he was tossing Liu Kang around real good and also landing attacks faster. But he still lost to Liu in a straight up fist fight.

The other two ninjas, Scorpion and Sub-Zero were still overall more powerful than Reptile. Against Sub-Zero Liu had to use unblockable stage interactibles to win. Without those he would have lost convincingly, since Sub-Zeros cold field was a big threat and was spreading fast. Someone like Reptile, who would have the physical advantage against Sub-Zero would still not have an answer for the cold field. And since Reptile was kinda portrayed more primal and animalistic, there is no way he would have pressed R1 during the fight.

And then there is Scorpion. IMO he was the most powerful ninja by far. He lost to Johnny Cage, which isn't really that big of a shame, considering that Johnny beat Goro, who was supposed to be a big deal. And again, stage interactibles were used to defeat Scorpion. Where Reptile lost to regular attacks.
But with that being said, also keep in mind that Scorpion never died. He returned in the sequel, was just about to defeat Sub-Zero, but then kidnapped Kitana instead. So Scorpion could teleport, shoot sentient worm-zipline-creatures out of his palm, spit fire out of his mouth and reform from being blown into 20 million pieces.

You said he pressed r1 for stage interaction thats ublockable

Honestly, LK had help with the Sub and Reptile fight. Kitana gave him a big hint how to kill Sub-Zero and Raiden warned him about Reptile if he "looks hard enough" so he was kind of expecting him. Scorpion though, Cage beat him in clever ways using an old shield to prevent him from being toast, then chopping the shit out of Scorpion lol. I loved how with some fights they displayed multiple stage interactions, transitions while others not so much.

Raiden told him that he'd find a guide in Outworld if he "looks hard enough". Pretty sure that's a reference to Kitana, not Reptile. He didn't get any help with the Reptile fight :p

lol oh he said "guide"? lol his accent is so thick, thought all these years he said "if you look hard enough, you will find another guy" lmao now I have to watch that scene again with subtitles lol. Thanks though lol. That makes sense though, he just seemed to know Reptile was following them and somehow saw him lol when Johnny was like "WTF are you doing?!" lol
