Tekken 7 General Discussion Thread - OP Updated With All Tekken Info

It's all so very confusing.
If you have unlocked everything else then the Noctis stuff will get unlocked one by one. If not then you could try tournament mode, if you come 1st or 2nd you will always get a rare box which are usualy the costumes and very high priced stuff.

I thought you was trying out Paul, how did it go?

I use Paul and I am on PS4
I just haven't had a good chance to mess with Paul yet actually. I got caught up with DBFz, but still had the Tekken itch, so I came back, and have been messing with a handful of different characters. Noctis, so far, is kind of brilliant.. but I still need to get some time with Paul.

Noctis is actually kinda Paul-like in a lot of ways. Both have Demoman, and while Noctis doesn't have Deathfist, he does have some very high damage, very long range mid options. Both have powerful tracking moves. Both control space. Paul is a bruiser though, or at least that's how I see him. Pressure and offense. Where-as Noctis I think might be more meant to play a hit and run style.

Also I don't have everything unlocked. I HATE playing vs the ai, so have don't it pretty limited and haven't played enough online to unlock it that way. I'll just grind it out lol.

Don't hate the AIs. If you set them in hard mode, like in special matches, you might learn one or two things about them. You might even find a good tech by mistake.

They have use for practicing combos and timings and such, but you can't meaningfully play mindgames or mix them, or condition them or any of the stuff I actually need to be better at. Though they are good for practicing confirms and conversions..

But I can just set the dummy to ai in practice mode and not have to deal with round loading times and health bars and all that nonesense.

Played a little Paul today finally.. Dunno.. Just not feeling him I dont think. Not as much as I had hoped.

Ya know who I'd main in a heartbeat if he wasnt.. himself? Jack. Duct-tape his moveset, range, everything as it is, only on a normal looking character.

As it stands now..

Noctis
Drag
Jack

Going to elim 2 of them, hopefully tomorrow. really leaning towards Noctis right now, but Jack is in the running. Love his moveset and everything about him, except.. him.. and Drag is just straight up simple and very very effective.

Yeah, first. Ive been fucking around here and there for a couple months, but I havent sat down and tried to learn the game really. Just fucked about in training mode occasionally, played a few sets here and there, and then wandered off to another game for a week or two, then back to Tekken, then wandered off, etc. So Im effectively a VERY vaguely knowledgeable newb. I understand the systems and the general play-to-play thinking process, but lack actual experience and execution lol

Lol I feel you. My brothers and I use to button mash on tag but we had fun. Never had the patience to learn tekken until I went to final round and saw that top 8 in person, now I'm grinding lol can I send an invite?

Any time. No damn mic atm.. unless we do voice chat on PC. My pc headphones dont work on PS4 and my ps4 ones are in the back seat of my car, which my GF took to work =/

Those were good games. Drags lows are fast imo, I need more time against him to see the frames. He seems high execution

Drag is SUPER easy to play. That's part of what makes him so ridiculous. Only thing difficult about him is his iwr2 stuff. If Im on point I can do them semi-reliably (in training mode) from ALMOST point blank.. if we are literally as close as we can get, I can rarely get them, but if I have even a *little* room, I can bang them out ok.. in a static environment.. Our real matches showed that's not entirely the case in a fight lol.

His d2, which is the one I used the most, the crouching one where he sweeps with his hand, is i17 -12/13 OB and about neutral OH. CH is that weird foot-grab stun animation that gives me a TON of frame advantage to work with. i17 is way too fast to see of course, so you just have to kinda read them, and do your best to punish ob or crush it outright. The other lows I was using, usually, were just little poke-y long range ones. It's almost not worth trying to make reads on them, as they are - OH in a lot of situations and do single digit damage.. outside of round closeing of course, the risk to ducking them is huge compared to eating the tiny damage - unless you have an ironclad read ofc.

Another thing to keep is mind, is I got away with a few botched iWR2s. If I just get ff2 its -12 or so, so you can punish. wr2 itself is super + OB, and the two look similar to one another, so I imagine it's hard to make the distinction in a match easily.. but if you have your sound turned up, wr2 makes a.. ehh. sort of hissing sound. like Drag yells SSSSSHHHHHHH as he does it. The animation is more flamboyant too, he cocks back harder and the whole thing just looks more powerful.

The rest is just poke stuff that I have to space properly and/or mix up properly so you dont really know when the blockstring is over and taking your turn or punishing becomes risky. I had some luck with that in the last couple matches.

Im learning that this entire game is about knowing what's possibly during/after strings. Ive never played Hwo before and I had ZERO idea when I could press buttons. I was trying t play a little defensive and was getting bopped. What little success I did have (we were what.. 8-9 you, 1 me? lol) was when I stayed offensive or had one or two good reads in a row... I started to get a little more comfortable on Drag towards the end though and the sets were a little closer.

Man, tracking armor that leads into 70+ damage is fucking insane.

Drag frame data and other tidbits on common moves:

wr2: i15-17, +5~7 / KND / TFU - Mid, CH Launcher
--> OB - d2 or df1 or b1+2 or b4,3 or b4,2,1. On Reg Hit, try to stomp.
--> if you get f2, do f2,4: i19, -7 / KND / uKZD - CH Launcher
ff3: i21~23, +3~5 / KND / KND - Tracking, High
(RD) wr1+2: i15~16, +5 / LNC / LNC - Forces Crouch. Same as wr2. LNC on normal hit.
d2: i18, -13 / 0 / +13 - Main low. Tracks. Dumb strong. Forces Crouch on both players. SS good option OH.
df1: i13, -2 / +7 / +7 - Great poke. Barely Negative. Extend w/ 4 for CHL
b1+2: i22 +6 / KND / KND - Pressure tool. OH Stomp.
qcf3: i19, -14 / -5 / AutoThrow - Long range low. Use carefully.
b1,2: i17, -13 / +9 / +9 - MM poke string. Some H evade @ start. Range. W!. Occasionally just use b1: i17, -10 / +1 / +1
df4: i12, -9 / +2 / +2 - Solid M poke. Range. VERY fast.
1,2,1: i10 -14 / KND / KND - Useful after frametraps. NCH. Try to confirm CH before finishing string.
b3: i14, -9 / +11 / +11 - Homing. S!. W!.
uf4: i22, -9 / KND / KND - Low crushing mini-launcher. OH d4,1,3
b4,3: i15, -9 / KND / KND - MH. Damage. Fast. W!. Mix w/ B4,2,1
b4,2,1: i15, +1 / +5 / +5 - Mix w/ B4,3. NCH. Try to mix w/ B4,2 only.
4,1: i12, -6 / +8 / +8 - Fast. HH. Damage. Main punish from ~i13.
qcf1: i17, -3 / CS / CS - H. Launcher. Safe. OB SS is good option. Whiff punisher.
1+2: i21, -12 / KND / KND - Powercrush. Very strong. Small evasion @ start. Hard to whiff punish.
db3: i27, -26 / KND / Autothrow - Snake Edge. Slow. Use sparingly. Can cancel with 1+2 throw setup.

Punish data, so you can get an idea of what he can do to you at various - frames. (assuming actual, functional player. If its me, I'll probably just mas 1,3 or df2, even if Im crouching because Im stupid and I forget)

ST -10: 2,1 or 1,3*
ST -12: 4,1
ST -15: df2 (launcher)
ST -17[far]: f1+2 - Deathfist Punish.
CR -11: ws4
CR -12: ws1,3
CR -15: ws2 (launcher)

and the Jack "experiment" was` just me trying him for 5 games or so and having no idea what I was doing and largely hating every moment of it.

This is extremely helpful because this is what I need for all characters, there's just so many. It can get frustrating.

Just so you know when fighting hwo, he is all plus frames. Even that armor is plus on block. Whenever I did jab into right flamingo, its just a quick way to get into right foot forward with plus frames. The trick is to walk out of the scenarios. the trick to hwo is spacing. Also ducking since his best chlaunchers are highs and lows. He lacks mids, but he does have an incredible mid with sky rocket. Is a jfr that's easier in right foot forward and that's why you just walk out of the mix or step, you need more movement. I'm still working on it too but just trying to do the movement helps eventually because you'll start accidentally blocking things. Movement really is my priority

It's interesting you brought that up, when I was on Jack, I stopped trying to bang with you and just started to back up,, and it helped a ton. I didnt know how to punish whiffs or what to do on Jack so I wasnt making any use of it, but I started to watch you whiff in my face a lot more and was wondering if that wasnt how you deal with Hwo a little bit.. just moving out of his range and trying to catch you coming in, or whiffing in my face.

Good catch man, thank you.

And yeah, I get caught up in trying to win when I should be trying to learn. Movement is everything in Tekken and I need to stop being stupid and try and make intelligent use of it.

You know what? Recording your matches help you runback all of your mistakes that you want to look into and fix. I believe that every pro does that.

I did this runback against my friend's competitive Akuma as Eddy. This ia where I noticed that D23> 3 didn't work well as ender in corner, because Akuma stands up pretty quick. There I switched this into my newly found tech OKI, FF3 into RLX> [4,3]> 2> any punishing move to rejuggle.

You should try that to improve your gameplay. It's, also, important to rewatch your matches to find something that you might have missed and want to try out. It's OK to share somw of your videos to let someonw hwlp you out with your main. ;)

I found some friends through injustice that are well known throughout the tekken community. They play with ppl like pling so they're no joke. I've just had detailed help is all. I've been grinding the movement though and now I'm about to switch to hitbox lol but you'll see a difference if you give it a week

Yeah my back dash cancels on the left side are pretty solid, but on the right they desperately need work. But what I need to learn as much as how to move is why I'm doing it. I mean obviously I know the basics and the reason behind all of it, but there are little nuances, like after a certain move or situation you can back dash and set up, or whatever. So I need to work on adding in the Y of what I am doing not just the how

I completely agree. What I meant was that my play and use of Dragunov is, right now, so basic there isn't a whole lot to take away from replays yet.. because I know what I have to work on - which is literally everything lol.

Once I tighten up and feel like I'm more in control and actually 'playing' sets, Ill absolutely try to get some replays up.

Gonna be free in about an hour. Went ahead and bought Noctis on PS4.
Got Noctis in Steam side. PCMR here. I wanted to lab properly, so I chose the PC. Have fun.
