Don't matter how long it takes for a list to be considered "legit" by your scrupulous requirements, it's still too early for a tier list regardless of it being by you or sonicfox. Let the game go for a year THEN come up with a tier list.
No one is going to wait an entire year to start takking about tier lists (in any game). Lol

Plus, the game will be patched multiple times before then, so the meta will change.

No one is telling you to not talk about tier discussions. I advocate for discussions of tiers just not creating a tier list out of only a months worth of experience. That's just illogical.

While I don't agree with the mods' decision to outright shut down all threads related to early tier discussions, you also have to consider that the opinion of a professional player of the caliber of Sonic is going to hold weight.

Sonic's multiple wins has proven that he has a better understanding of NRS games than just about everyone in the community. It's not a case of elitism, it's the simple reality that he probably knows more about this stuff than we do.

That logic applies to the real world too. I can't walk into a surgical operation and tell a doctor how he is wrong because I read a few books and dissected a frog in school.
Actually, you saying that something that isn't ok for anyone else is ok for SonicFox because he's Hollywood enough is exactly what elitism is, you just think that in this case it's justified, which is a purely subjective opinion as its simply where you personally chose to draw the line. Regardless, SonicFox having the best results does not automatically mean he has the highest understanding of the game either - he has a track record for outlandish statements that often turn out to be false or at best remain unproven. In many other sports including eSports, there are guys who don't even play the game who have equal or even larger grasp on competitive knowledge and understanding of the game - you think Phil Jackson could put it down on the court at all, or Rex Ryan would do anything other than get destroyed out there on the field? You see the same thing in the competitive eSports as well, and fighting games are no different, Sonic undoubtedly understands the game better than the average poster on this fuckin website, but his voice is by no means the gospel either and does not discount anybody from being right where he is wrong, and that goes to the other guy saying "anything SonicFox says is fact" which is the wackest, dickridingest statement I ever heard.

Your assuming that a tier list can be factual. It can't, it's subjective.

Your also trying to assume that Ethos plays no part in discussions of tier lists and character viability. That's just not realistic. If Justin Wong posted a Marvel tier list it would at face value be taken more seriously than a tier list than some random player. Same with Daigo in SF, same with one of the Gods in smash etc.

All that being said, people have been judging this tier list based on its merit. People are either agreeing with it, challenging it, or asking for clarification. So I don't really see the point of this argument.
I'm not assuming a tier list can be factual, but I am stating that a tier list is based on elements of the game that are factual. Obviously a tier list cannot be factual in the sense of the word that most people use, it changes over time in accordance with the meta.

I'm not trying to assume that ethos plays no part in discussions of tier lists, of course it does. I'm saying that what some people go to when discussing a tier list doesn't really matter. At lower levels of play people discuss character's supers as part of their viability, I don't care about that either. Can't we agree that a tier list should be as "objective" as possible, while also biased towards a high level of play (at least for our purposes)?

As far as character viability, why should ethos play any part in that? The fact that a tier list created by Justin Wong or M2K [EDIT: or in this case Sonicfox] would get taken more seriously means just that, it would get taken more seriously. It doesn't mean what the tier list shows is anymore true, because as I've already said the character's positions on a tier list correspond to facts in the game/real world, which Justin or M2K being a top player has nothing to do with.

His voice may not be the "gospel', but as someone who is ranked and looked at as being the very best that this community has, his words will be taken precedent over the simple ramblings of a random person on this website that would try to make a tier list. His words carry so much power that even if you don't realize it, he's affecting you or your character in some ways (look at Jason for Christ's sakes and what that community turned into after the "Fox it Up series" in which Sonic basically made a call to arms).

Usually tier discussions start with someone submitting their tier list. Then others say what they agree or disagree with, and adjustments are made. This isn't unusual.

That's great but at the end of the day its the words that count, not who's saying them

thats exactly what the problem is.

not really, any logical person would take it with a grain of salt.

I didn't know that haha I'm not from the U.S., had I referenced Australian names you guys would have had no idea what I'm talking about lol so I tried to throw some names you guys would know... regardless point still stands, plenty of other people in his position don't have that to their name, also, he definitely couldn't do it nowadays so the main point is that you can still have knowledge without being out there doing the physical work or even playing yourself, and thats pretty hard to dispute

Agreed I'm a basketball junkie and as a avid sports fan and sports debate show enthusiast your point is often argued but in this game where knowledge seem to bee power I tent to differ to Sonic fox on most issues.

i take it you meant "defer" to Sonic? because the way you wrote it means the opposite jst to let you know, took me a minute to work out what you meant. And yeah, I agree, Sonic isn't a bad person to listen to by any means, I'm just saying if he can have an opinion on something so can the rest of us mortals, and its very possible someone on here might be right where he is wrong (which he has been before like every other human). I'm just saying, where can people discuss this stuff if not the forum dedicated to it lol, and just because sonic says something doesn't immediately prove wrong all people who think otherwise, still gotta hear the explanation and see it in action first imo

So are all his top 5 S tier, and next 5 A tier
Or from A to B, or wasup

This matters for a better understanding of placements and better discussion

Usually... (varies on who makes the list)
S is all favorable numbers
A is mostly favorable with some evens
B favorable + evens with some bad
C mostly even with some bad
F mostly bad

I don't really see your point here. Yes, just because Sonicfox posted it does not mean it is fact. It is still entirely subjective. And as mentioned before, many people in here have disagreed with it or questioned it, so it is not like everyone's just agreeing. No tier list is "true" with very few exceptions, there are always arguments to be made and meta changes to be had.

dude Phil Jackson was coming off the bench for them he was a way better coach then player which made his statement even that much better.
Uhhh no he did both at a high level who's to say one didn't directly correlate to the other. he played at a high level and understands and can coach at one. There was just a tier list from game rant floating around on Facebook I didn't read it but the comments suggest that cyborg was better than black adam. Totally BS to us more seasoned players who probably play stiffer competition. Now imagine playing at a level higher then ours and being able to form an opinion because of that experience. And know what it takes to be effective. Granted I don't know what your level is. Ps coming of the bench in basketball isn't all that bad ask Manu Odom, Crawford. It's an important role

They don't have a distinct letttering probably because he doesn't know yet. The metas still early, those are just who he thinks are the top 10

In regard to the basketball analogies I PM'ed you my rebuttal. Also a passionate sports fan. in regard to the tier list you found on Facebook I would argue that TYM is far more then random people giving their opinion. I feel like the average TYM poster usually knows a BIT more and wants to learn MUCH more then a random guy on Facebook.

Ya that's my point we are more invested in the game more experienced more knowledgeable etc. Kinda like Sonic would be in giving his tier list and advice. He has the extra level of knowledge. I mean I understand deadshot is a problem but we view him as less if a problem after seeing the patience and defense needed to play against him which was demonstrated by top players.

I can't really speak for WB-chan but I think his point meet somewhere in the middle with yours. i would reference this back to history how. Aristotle and the great scientific minds(scientific council) at the time came to the conclusion the earth is flat. this way of thinking became law and fact and anyone who challenged this notion was looked down upon. example Gallileo who thought the earth is round. my intention of this is not to say that sonic fox or anyone of you guys are wrong. my intentions is to say anyone can be wrong and its up to us as a community to challenge and question each other no matter who that person might be.

This is wrong. Aristotle helped prove that Earth is spherical. Galileo was put in prison for going against the church's teachings.

The rest of your point can stand as-is, just thought I'd point this out.

You can have an opinion if you aren't competing at the highest level but it's based upon all of the information that you are allowed to receive, which is a double edged sword. You can remain objective while those who do play at a high level will experience more that is siphoned through their lens which could distort an actuality. I played @ShazzyBoy (is this shazzyam?) and afterward I believed that batman was top 5 because holy christ was I sufficated by pressure. People say push block and backdash, so now that I have more tools against that character I know that I may have incorrectly evaluated. There is a theme that people believe darkseid is placed higher than he ought to be, but after playing @Eldriken and getting mopped by teleport trait mixups i'm inclined to disagree with this threads consensus. You can't see how crazy the character can be, but I cannot tell you the faults in his gameplan yet, so both of us don't know something that is key in correct evaluation.
Tldr- observers can make judgements that are objective, players have access to a greater pool of information that is distorted by their experience ie I play superman so I think catwoman is bullshit.
Woot.
Philisophical debate over, lets talk about why people don't think atrocitus deserves a top 5 spot, i'm so curious

my bad you are correct with Aristotle. I always get the greek philosophers mixed up i meant Socrates. and for galileo he was still looked down upon.
