Why Discord is ruining the community

wsj515

This is my billionth life cycle.
its not even against the rules to post in someone's thread "pure retinal aids" "threads like this is why TYM is cancer nowadays" etc and other favorite toxic catchphrases i see on here that would get you warned once and banned the second time on other forums, and drives off a lot of people not interested in it. I've done it myself, I don't even care anymore because i know its how TYM is and will likely never change.

post a thread about how good or bad you think a certain character is right now and see what happens
I've been engaged in many of those discussions. People are passionate about their opinions sure, they even straw man and whine but nothing is even close to as toxic as you say. Do you want a discussion forum that is a well lit safe space where everyone happily agrees? Conflict happens.

In what world is saying "pure retinal aids" toxic? Its a dumb post and doesn't add anything to the discussion, but it's certainly not hurting anyone. Stuff like that happens all the time in discord, just read Pig's post above.

Good for you for being part of your own perceived problem, that's a great attitude to have.

A.) I've been on TYM Discord from close to the start when it was dead as shit, I'm a mod of the server and have advertised and done more to grow it than probably anyone aside from Tay himself. Pig has been on there ONCE. He had a great chat with us all there, but his opinion on what happens there "all the time" does not in any way trump my own lol, and I can guarantee you there has been like one or two people on there ever who have brought that TYM attitude of shitting on people's opinions derisively instead of joining the discussion, and they have been told to stop,e. Regardless, my post is not referring to the TYM discord, I'm referring to individual character communities, e.g. what this thread is about.

B.) I didn't say its a problem. I'm simply saying it's the kind of posts that make other people prefer places like Discord, and whether you don't mind it doesn't change the fact that others do and have taken their content with them, lol. At the same time the relaxed moderation is what makes TYM how it is, and as I explained earlier I'm not advocating for change, I enjoy it for what it is, I'm just saying you aren't going to bring back people who are looking for something that you aren't (and have found it) WITHOUT changing what you are. You might not think responding to someones opinion with "omg eye cancer, insert big meme about please stop posting" toxic, but pretty much every other forum would, and a lot of people avoiding that sort of posts do, and thats the point. If it WAS changed to suit the people who left it wouldn't change it to some "safe space" (ironic coming from someone who just called me out for using buzz words when this is practically the definition of it), the only change that those people will want is somewhere that promotes discussion and conflict of opinions instead of the name calling, flaming, mockery and posts that contribute nothing other than driving people away that many "conflicts" currently consist of on here lol. Regardless I'm not advocating for change and I've outright said so I think FIVE times now. So it's ironic that you mention other people relying on a strawman fallacy as you clearly know what you are doing right now, right?

C.) you are saying that posts like that aren't a problem and aren't toxic at all (somehow) but still in the same post arguing with me for saying I have just behaved the same way as everyone else, as is allowed in the rules and as you just defended. I feel like you just want to argue with me lol so you can have it

2) TYM is actually one of the more heavily-moderated gaming fan forums. If you don't believe me, take a stroll through any community for CS:GO or LoL (or just play those games) so you can get a glimpse of what real toxicity really is.
Yeah over here I have actually been told to calm down

on srk they just let me run wild I basically run the place, its the lunatics running the asylum and im the loudest lunatic!!!!!!!

anyways death to discord yall

I haven't been in here since IGAU, but I don't see any toxicity. As others stated, that's more of a buzzword.

I started using the Discords and it's cool for real-time discussion and responses, but it's seriously lacking in terms of a long term knowledge base. It's basically one long ass thread with everything in a massive clusterfuck.

My conclusion is that people use it because it's easy to have conversations. There is no other redeeming quality of Discord for this type of game. It's great for shit like PUBG, CSGO, or other team games where comms are essential. Discord is nothing more than a glorified chat room when it comes to a game like this. It's great for real-time feedback and discussion, but it doesn't do well with long-term development of guides/strategies/tactics etc. It simply makes it more difficult for a wide variety of individuals to contribute in a meaningful way to a topic.

I'll use whatever. I don't really care. Forums will always be king when it comes to serious archiving and knowledge base building. You can look at many examples of other games where Discord is heavily used and see that extensive in-depth guides and information are almost always found in forums regardless of how active a Discord is for that game. If Discord is the primary focus for discussion, it will only negatively impact a game's community in the end. At the end of the day, Google doesn't search Discord chats and that's damning.

yup, i agree, and as a result of this the people who have disagreed with the way this site is have focused on something they prefer. You can't bring them back without changing what TYM is. Or making Discord equally flamey I guess :p
Personally, I'm not trying to "bring people back". I just want concrete information to be out there, somewhere. Doesn't have to be on TYM, just publicly posted. Whether that's a diff forum, social media or twitch/youtube.

- its not even against the rules to post in someone's thread "pure retinal aids" "threads like this is why TYM is cancer nowadays" etc and other favorite toxic catchphrases i see on here that would get you warned once and banned the second time on other forums, and drives off a lot of people not interested in it. I've done it myself, I don't even care anymore because i know its how TYM is and will likely never change. But other people who do care know this too and hence choose to keep their activity to a Discord
If the report function isn't enough, put them on your ignore list. See what Crimson has been saying is that there's an equal number of people who want the freedom to say whatever the fuck they want and there's others who want TYM to be a safe space. And the users take no responsibility, it's always the moderators fault, no matter what.

It used to be booming around here. Now it's a ghost town.

Sad because I have some friends getting into the game and they asked where they could go and send find some information.

My immediate response is TYM, but then I get this feeling in my gut that it isn't like it used to be. EVO 2013 and 2014 were great times to be around here.

Sad.

Lmao, I'm so glad I'm not a mod anymore. I no longer get blamed for everything, it's great!
drop the strawman, nobody is blaming mods for shit, if you think my point was "oh everyone went to discord because mods are so bad at their jobs" then you've completely misunderstood or haven't even bothered reading my post.

I missed the part where I was talking to you.

And I missed the part where anybody else said something about mods. Care to share, or just going to backpedal on the statement you were obviously making?

No, not really. I said what I said because I felt like saying it. If it was directed to you specifically I would have quoted you or tagged you. Despite what other people in your life may have led you to believe, not everything is about you. Now if you don't mind, I'd much rather keep this on topic than see you whine about imaginary things going on in your head. Think you can do that?

"OH HEY GUYS LOL THIS THREAD TOOK AN INTERESTING TURN, GLAD IM NOT A MOD ANYMORE SO THAT ITS NOT ME GETTING BLAMED FOR EVERYTHING LOLOL"

completely unconnected to the only discussion that was currently being had, as well as it being a discussion about moderation, I'm totally sure. Which is of course why you chose to send it in a personal message to the only two people it was directed to. And explains why you TOTALLY didnt get all personal when I responded to it. Oh wait, that's the opposite of what just happened. And you literally made the exact point again in the last sentence of that post, how are you going to try act like that wasn't what you were saying lol?

Oh and what exactly have I whined about at all lmao? Tech being kept on discord, nope that was blatantly you guys doing that one. You just keeping hiding behind this strawman that IM complaining about something when im not. I like TYM just the way it is and this is the 6th time saying that, I have like over 2000 posts here in the space of a little over a year, and I've payed TWICE in that time for premium membership because I like it so much, and I'm one of the few people from my country who consistently posts on here, and I've outright said I don't want it to change more times then you could have possibly missed, so drop this ridiculous strawman that I'm "whining about TYM" or it's moderation and stop trying to play the victim, because like I said you clearly haven't even read my posts if that's the point I'm making. Discord channels are not going to change to accommodate you, and they are popular for opposite reasons to TYM, and nobody who is on there because they don't like the attitude of TYM is going to want to come back to exactly the same thing they deliberately left. Deal with it, or adapt. That's all there is to it. You couldn't even have THIS discussion without needing to go at me personally lol

Still training...
Given some of the comments and conversations I've seen in threads here it's not that surprising some prefer Discords.
This implies that there are different people on Discord than on TYM. I don't use Discord, so I could be wrong, but I suspect the people you think you may be avoiding are there too. After all, they want attention.
And don't fall for the trap that "they're a jerk on TYM but they're cool on Discord." A jerk is a jerk and will reveal his ways soon enough.

I don''t really see how withholding tech is such a bad thing. If you found it, you're not obligated to share, nor are you a dick for not sharing. It's not like it's a glitch you're exploiting, in which case that would be unfair.

Take Sonic Fox vs DJT in some MKX tourney, I think it was Summer Jam; Sonic beat DJT in an Erron vs Tremor because Sonic knew there was an interaction which caused Tremor's ability not to hit him. Had Sonic shared that info, DJT might not have played Tremor, and such a moment wouldn't have happened, giving DJT a better chance at winning. But Sonic withheld that info, so he knew he could win still, and he did.

They may be on Discord, but I've been in a few private ones where the conversations stay on topic and the "aids are kept out or to a bare minimum.

Your mothers main.
The site would be 47% more chill if people stopped making\taking things so personal. Other then that its pretty much on par with with every other major FG.

TYM's #1 L taker.
Easier to have a coherent conversation when you're playing in real time and talking to people in real time.

Forum environments slowly ongoing lead to different discussions that I believe may not flow as naturally, but it is all there documented.

Compiling the tech and writing it down on a forum post that stays UPDATED is harder. I don't want to try to learn some tech on a first post that 10 pages later turns out isn't entirely accurate.

I jumped on discord because at one point at had to load 5 different pages to get to my character forum.

tym main page -> forums -> injustice series -> injustice 2 -> gorilla grodd.

Nice to have the character icons back- but yeah, just a couple days of that early in launch and I was like "f* **this".

But agreed, Discord is no good for archiving tech and collecting cumulative strategies and information about a character. It should be a standard pattern to have good stuff on the discord recorded back in the correct sub-forum.
I just have a bookmark that takes me straight to the Injustice 2 forums. I even have it saved as a quick button in my favorites bar (on PC and on mobile). Then I can quickly see what's recent, or go into any of the individual character forums.
