Why Discord is ruining the community

PMs did the same in MKX -- they kept things local, but made info scattered and hard to find.

If you asked me what page a piece of info is in in the Takeda PM, I couldn't tell you.

It's nice when people periodically consolidate things into guides and info threads.
I never Discord. Just dont have the time, nor inclination, really. But these forums honestly feel semi-desolate in comparison to the usual flurry of activity we'd see at launch, and I wonder if its because everyone is in Discord talking instead of posting here.

Generally you see utter explosions of information in the character forums, and after having been around these forums for several years now, it's felt comparatively anemic to me these last few days.

It really sucks for someone like me who exclusively uses these forums for info and discussion, and I now wonder if I'm missing all of the good stuff. With how busy my job keeps me I only get to play a few hours a week, so being able to ensure that my playtime is maximized with the latest info is a huge reason for loving these forums and this community so much.

With Injustice and the first year of MKX before Discord was even remotely popular, tons and tons of information flooded the forums, especially during the early weeks, but with Injustice 2, it kinda feels like a lot of character info like combo's for example are not being posted as frequently as with the other games, not to mention character discussion in general.
It's there, but it feels like there is less compared to the earlier games. (I assume the same was with MK9, but I wasn't around for that).

Discord theres not even alot of tech

Theres an issue making accounts and recovering passwords i had to click contact us and finally got here

IMO, Discords is just a chatroom to discuss anything we find, and if we feel like it we could post what we find in TYM. I have seen the techs, the combos and such to be scattered either in Discords, or in Twitter.

Yup, exactly. And I wonder how much of that is due to Discord being the place where people are meeting up rather than spending that energy posting here.

anyone heard of the cellphone ? It's so much better than a landline!

I like TYM but discords are the new thing. They're more character specific and with more like minded individuals. Most people don't like it because they don't know how to use it, don't know which servers are there, and are scared of change. People just want tech to learn easily instead of actually loooking for it.

history has shown it does the opposite, ppl will just whine until NRS levels you back down to their level

That will happen regardless. People are already whining, hasn't even been a week yet.

But the more knowledgeable your competitors are, the higher the level of play will be. If something is a gimmick aka "not real" but it's working because people don't know about it, and you purposefully withhold that information, you're the reason people like SonicFox dominate our games. Yeah you might get a few cheap wins in tournament, but the overall level if play is not going to be as good so again, the top 5 players are still gonna beat you the fuck out of you and everyone else.

Again, I have zero problems with Discord. I'm in private and public ones FOR this game. All I'm encouraging y'all to do is to eventually share any information you obtain publicly. Either on TYM or somewhere else, doesn't matter. You obviously can do whatever you want, but it will not only help players get into the game, but it will also level up pretty much everyone who reads/sees it.

Yes Kid , ~90% of the Pop stuff is stupid and stupid people bait for it , now go play with your Fidget Spinner and make Instagram Photos about it.
If I'm a kid then you must be senile. The fact that you don't understand this program at all and just write it off as a fad is typical old ppl shit lol, and makes you look incredibly stupid.

I play multiple games, I have Discord open for:
  1. for TYM, for obvious reasons, great place to chat with people on here, discuss anything, and the Discord community in general is a lot of fun and much less toxic than TYM, and even people who didn't like each other on the forums have become friends through it
  2. for Australian NRS community who mostly don't use TYM to help me find matches will people in my country.
  3. for I2 Flash, to help me get instant answers to questions while I'm labbing and to help answer other peoples
  4. for Australian Fighting Game scene, to help me find games for SFV, and Also has many helpful things like a trade channel for sticks / pads / convertors, and helped me fix my own stick, and just in general discusses the Australian community and scene for the game, which is very different to the US one which is what everyone else talks about
  5. for SFV Vega, to save me diving through piles of threads on Shory for info for a game I don't play as seriously
  6. for Marvel Heroes, necessary for organizing group content, raiding, and just an excellent place to discuss comic book shit
  7. for Starcraft Zerg, this is a game where the best resource is other better people as every problem is relative to your own play and help is almost always most useful when given on an individual level, there is no substitute for Discord for this and just discussing issues
  8. and for my corp on EvE online, a tight group of core friends from very different time zones (even South Africa), its an excellent free voice program for when we are online together for a game that requires and benefits from 3rd party comms, but also a great way to leave messages for each other when we aren't, and to continue discussing shit so we don't lose touch and maybe lose interest in the game because we don't see each other online all that often without arranging it, which had happened in the past before Discord. It's also a great way for us to ARRANGE those times for us to be online to play as a unit, because thats hard to arrange with a bunch of people who are never organically online at the same time - Discord let us organize easily through the program that is basically our voice comms. Eve is also an open world game, people we even interact with in our area even people who we play against in game, send them an invite to public channel and its cool to have them on call when the need be or just having more people around shooting the shit and keeping our community interesting for everyone.
All in 8 little tabs on the side of my Discord, each tab gives me a little indicator when there is new message, and each tab is broken down into multiple channels, any or all are of which are muteable if I don't care for notifications for that particular channel, so everytime there is a new message, it's something I want to read. That's an explanation for you.
And thats the games I'm playing currently. When I was playing Dawn of War 3 beta earlier this year for example, there was a Discord up for it, so I joined it. Had all my niche questions immediately answered and immediately found people of my skill level looking for sets. I left because I didn't like the game. The discord however was excellent. That's just the most recent example. I keep my Discord tabs relevant to the things I'm currently doing, but it's SUCH a useful program.

I've been using Discord for nearly 2 years now. You might not understand or care why the program is so good for some simply because it's not useful for you, but it most certainly is not a fad. It's a great way to keep in touch with multiple people from multiple communities, all in the one place, with free voice chat channels, and it's available as an app as well.

I don't think Discord is for stupid people. I think stupid people are the ones who call everyone else stupid just because they are using something that you don't understand. lol

Things people do in Discord are the things people done in IRS and then Skype , Vent ... Teamspeak blabla years ago.
Nothing new

I use Discord for everything. Any subject you can think of there's generally a room for. I mean, the program has over 45 million users even. I don't get how you're comparing it to Skype or anything, which is fine but is Skype like a.. Fad?

The functionality of Discord and teamspeak/skype etc. Is also way different. It's an integrated program used for chatting and typing that's completely connected by a web to every room/user etc. Opposed to single isolated chats.

We became bad when we started to discuss techs in private, it was the freaking worst and discord is now doing what TYM's PM did to MKX.

We as a community need to change and start talking about technical matters in public, things like illuminati top tiers group and such needs to die.

The only reason i'm on Tekken discord is because they have a bot that allows you to search for frame data of every single move in the game, and that's is maybe the only thing discord could be good for in general, specially for us if we managed to replicate the idea.
I swore against being on Discord but I think imma need that link to the Tekken one (lol)

EntropicByDesign

It's all so very confusing.
I feel like consolidating information and tech here is far better than Discord.. I've been in and out of several SFV discords and a lot of the stuff you find pinned tends to be old and out of date and generally messy. Many times it's the same stuff posted over and over.

Being able to jump onto TYM and click a button to find properly gathered and curated information is a godsend. We might be lagging a little behind over what's floating around Discord but I feel like we'll rally. There is more accountability on a forum and it's a lot harder for bullshit and just plain wrong headedness to be passed off as fact - it happens obviously, but not to the extent that it does on Discord.

It's up to our members though, for people in the community to step up and create and curate and maintain info dump threads and combo threads and other info repository threads. I don't get Injustice until later tonight. Lee's, but when I have found my two mains, I intend to fill the rolls listed above unless someone else is already stepping up. If that's the case then I might look around for a neglected character or two and set something up for them just to be helpful. I'll never be good at these games, but I can be useful lol.

We need people who will take it seriously though, imo, and not just make a thread to get thier name on something stickied, then never touch it again, but people who are legit looking for further this forums purpose and the FGC as a whole.

Discord is a great tool on the surface but I've had trouble using it for anything actually productive, at least in SFv.

What about a TYM/Inj2 Discord in general? Something to give players and members looking for a live chat experience an outlet for that, buy with the ability to funnel information and findings back through TYM itself? We just need to look for ways to make the TYM experience greater and more convenient than the Discord experience.

Just some thoughts.

There appears to be zero activity in the TYM or I2 discords. Barely any activity on the TYM forums. Injustice 2 dead on arrival?

Would really like to play against people that are good and will give me more than one or two games especially when they wreck me.

Of course we want to learn tech easily - that is quite literally the entire point of this website. Everyone comes and discusses and shares what they know, and those who figure things out make it easier for newbies or lesser-skilled players to be educated and get caught up. It's literally the point of this forum, and why forums, with their stickies and guides, are a great format.

Not everyone has hours every night to sit in the lab and break the entire game down themselves. When I was younger and had more free time, I happily broke the game down, and whattaya know - I would spend hours writing long and detailed FAQs to help out newer players so they could learn the tech easily. I'd break down every single move (in Tekken, that's easily 70+). Why? Because I love the game, and I want to help, and that's what forums are for.

Now that I'm older and am too busy to get more than 30-60 minutes of playtime every day or two, I am extremely grateful for other players who do the same. @REO has been an absolute monster on youtube, putting out concise and amazing character breakdown videos that allow me be ready to play a new character quickly. I can watch a short video on my lunch break between meetings, and be ready to rock that evening.

I understand why Discord is nice, but when it comes to clean and efficient categorization of information that is easily located, you currently cannot beat the forums.

Revisiting this:

I think having a discord is perfectly fine because you get to talk to players in real time and like minded individuals at that.

If people want tech/strategies posted, I'll go out of my way to post them given I have time.

Wtf even is a discord?

Pro-Tip: I'm old and un-hip (not hip?)

All I know is, if I want to learn something about a character or am having a hard time coming up with strategies to use, I want to be able to come to a place where information is consolidated in an easy to find format. (Aka character forums with threads like "so and so combo guide", "so and so setups", etc.)

Much easier and better for the community that way than having to be part of secret society or whatever. lol

Not even close

In a group I'm in there's over 2000 messages a day

Most people stopped posting info here because trolls/bad apples were allowed to run a muck and dare for a second if one of us defended ourselves and lashed out on one of these clowns I got MKIIBILL or whatever the fuck his name is sending me infraction warnings. Infractions? I'm not in third grade....so we all just choose to discuss elsewhere. It's way easier and we don't put up w bs.

For those thirsty for knowledge I suggest check my YouTube and reo's YouTube and all the top player streams
